Intellivision Amico - Tommy Tallarico introduction + Q&A

Recommended Posts

Papa Pete posted his list of uniquely associated Intellivision games he would like to see a remake of. Like Papa Pete - disregarding licensing issues and rumors of these being remade already my first top 5 list would be: Utopia, Tron Deadly Discs, B-17 Bomber and a couple of wild cards - Dracula & Atlantis (not really an exclusive but a game I associate mostly with the Intellivision).

I mentioned, in the other thread, Vectron, Mazeatron, Solar Sailer, Bomb Squad, Star Strike.  These are games that had some good ideas but could have been better.

It's kind of the opposite of what a publisher would want to do, leverage popular/succesfull titles.  But I don't think it really matters with the Intellivision.

Same with Dracula for me - had some good ideas but just didn’t click as a great game. However the Amico needs a spooky game or two by Halloween 2021, right?

And I'll bring it up again... only "marketing uneducated" folks would say that having different color machines is stupid and proves that we don't know what we're doing.

A little late in replying on this Tommy, but this is insane. I mean NOBODY likes or collects different color machines for a single console. It just isn't done!😂

It also appears that many are fearful that Google will just pull the plug on it and leave the adopters tranded, there is a website somewhere dedicated to all of the things that people got used to and then Google killed the offering. I don't think we have that fear that from the Amico folks. :)

To this day, that is my favorite flavor of the Dreamcast.

Yeah... it was a pretty dumb thing to say.

Not that I'm surprised.  :)

Yeah... not looking too good for Stadia at this point.

Will be interesting to see how they react and fix all of the issues that folks are complaining about.

Could happen.  Ya never know!   :)

If you offer me a Pink Hello Kitty Amico at roughly the same price point you are expecting to retail normal units at, I will commit to buying one right now. That would be the push that would open my wallet to your project.

In fairness, collections like these aren't the kind of thing a soccer mom or a truly casual gamer would ever put together.  I mean some of those Gamecubes and N64s are extremely expensive.  Similarly, I don't think having color choices is a determinative factor either way in the success or failure of a consumer product.  I think there is something to be said for the fact that it could lead to consumer confusion or possible inventory issues if a particular color proves very popular and sells out and people refuse to buy the less popular color.  That's why Nintendo tends to restrict color choices early on and then adds additional options later.

There is a reason to have colour options; but selling multiple units to collectors isn't it.  It's the same reason that consoles in the 1970s had woodgrain then not in the 1980s.

I think Apple really discovered the potential with the iMac.

Nintendo is large enough they basically ignore retailers and release special colors/editions occasionally to stimulate sales. For most companies, including Intellivision, custom colors/versions are often driven by retailers who want a distinctive unit just for themselves. The standard Amico retail colors will be Glacier White and Obsidian Black but certain retailers may request (and back with pre-orders) custom color models just for that retailer. Maybe Target will order the GTO red model for their stores and back it with a large guaranteed order to cover the specialized production cost. I am guessing that the only Intellivision company special color combo will be the gold & wood grain version which will be pre-ordered, so they will have a good idea of the demand on these special units. So basically Intellivision isn’t risking anything early on because all of the special colors will be backed by retailer or customer preorders. Later on they may release a Hello Kitty edition like the Nintendo Switch Pokémon special edition after the system is well established.

Hello Kitty Amico would be considered a Special Limited Edition version of the console and would need to be sold at a slightly higher price as the expense to manufacture would be higher.

Damn!  So close!!

:D

This is exactly the reason why all of the different choices are Special Limited Editions and not just normal choices.  The Black & White are the normal retail choices.  All of the others are special editions only obtained through special means and distribution outlets.  This becomes very important to a place like Walmart and GameStop if they are the only ones where a specific style can be obtained.  This is exactly why the brick and mortor retailers love us so much.  The same will be the case with our physical game media as well.  Each store has it's own special physical limited editions that can not be purchased anywhere else except for that specific store.

It also enables us to sell Limited Editions direct to consumers to obtain a better profit margin for the company (so we're able to provide more cool items like this).  And unless some retailer comes around and pays us a TON of money... you'll be seeing things like the Vintage Woodgrain only available through our mailing list and website.  :)  That way... folks know that any of those profits are supporting us 100%.

Agreed.

Although it's interesting... having the different color options available and the entire console being reasonably priced has shown that even non-gaming moms said they may pick up one for the living room and other color for another location (kids room, man cave, etc.).

Will be interesting to see how it all unfolds.
