Intellivision Amico - Tommy Tallarico introduction + Q&A

I will say that we have 8 cores and 2.1GHz and that every game that was in our trailer was running 60fps.

Kind of curious, considering the games aren't humongous complex 3D worlds will the Amico be able to render at higher resolution for 4k televisions?

I'm tired of a machine or an industry being judged on speed or budget.  I think it's silly.  The machine or games are either fun or they aren't.  I'm trying to change the narrative here so I don't want to focus on that type of stuff.

This is my same thinking, rereading my last post I realized that I expressed the concept in such a way it seems that I am in favor of the hardware specifications versus the fun but it is not so. I'm sorry it wasn't clear. :)

I agree, perhaps also in this case we could find people (not me for sure) that could complain about clock frequency saying that is "too low" but we can't do anything about them. :)

I agree that there's no point in marketing/promoting the specifications.  Some people just like to know what they are buying.  Even if the specs are eventually listed in small print somewhere, someone will do a teardown.

HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAA!!!!!!!

I believe (from what I've been told) that that PS5 is only the dev kits and not the final consumer version.  But still funny as hell.  :D

The chip is capable of 4K but we will NOT be supporting 4K.  Takes up 4 times the resources (and budgets!) and doesn't really matter to the average person who will be buying and playing the console.

I, for one, was completely blown away by the game samples in the trailer!!  My imaginary concept of 2.5D when you said it was not even close to what I saw in your video.  In fact, I've been profusely spreading the word (and 10.10.20) to everyone I come in contact with that might recognize the Intellivision brand, and would use Zaxxon as my example of 2.5D.  Hahaha.  Now I have to go back to everyone and make sure they see your trailer!

Absolutely! The people who would have a tendency to be concerned are the PC/Console Master Race types who are not the Amico's target market. Not all of course, some people are curious 'how far it can go' in the future but they can find out from the label/teardown as you say. Soccer mom Susan certainly isn't going to throw down the Amico in disgust if she found out it doesn't have a i7 inside. You can have fun on a Tamagotchi, Ti83 calculator, OG Atari or Intellivision, Nintendo/Nintendo classic, MiSTer FPGA,  Playstation 4, XBox One X or soon the Amico. Nintendo has proven again and again "it's about the games not the processor" - as long as you have enough horsepower to make great games you want to make then anything else is expensive overkill.

Totally agree, specs are not relevant if it can play good games. The challenge is having good games that don't get lost in all the shovelware, casual, app store stuff in everyone's faces today. That's a new factor in gaming that was not present in the day, so there's a numbing effect happening now.

I'd say simpler games with good human to machine, and human to human interaction will make or break this thing. Give us games with the sense of playing laser tag, battleship or paintball that exploit the desire to make a (virtual) mess or make stuff explode. People find that kind of stuff satisfying, and the screens in the controls could be a good way to enhance that, like being slimed or blowed up or something.

I mentioned a new version of the Bilestoad before. I know that's theoretically too violent for this, but a new version with Robot Knights would work great. Instead of blood on the floor, it could be motor oil. I always thought the knights were robots back then anyway on a green screen. Get Marc Goodman to green light it or develop it for a few bucks. The guy deserves something more from his original creation after getting totally robbed by software piracy back in the day. I also mentioned something akin to a remake of the Star Trek SOS arcade game. A two player version of that where you played cat and mouse with your opponent would be neat, and doesn't have to use any Trek IP. Just thinking out loud.

P.S.- That PS5 dev console looks like some kind of extension to their virtual reality system..........for your junk.

It's the dev kit version. Maybe SONY tried to put the focus on the "V" for the fifth version of playstation console but something must have gone wrong in the design! :D

That Dev Kit design really reminds me of the old ZIP drive.

Funny how some people don’t want high resolution graphics on this new machine.  They won’t buy it if the graphics are too good.

Back in the day we were all about that. “Closest thing to the real thing”.   Now if they see a baseball that doesn’t look like a square they are ‘OUT’.

Anyways I’m on board.  Ready to pre-order.   Hopefully the free folk north of the wall can order it.

Rumor has it Bed, Bath, and Beyond will be carrying this new PS5, hence they will rename their store "Bed Pans and Beyond!" 🤣🤣🤣

Holy mother of god, that photo of the PS5 is actually real?

I've heard 2 stories as to the image.  One is that it is the dev kit model.  The second is that it is one leaked design render out of several possible designs being considered.

Either way, it is a real image from Sony but likely not what customers will eventually get.

I agree - hopefully it is more reliable that those old ZIP drives though. Had storage for DAYS - 100 whole megs 😲 (even more later) but you never knew when the click of death would strike. One of the products I loved and hated.

Yep.  Happened to me.  I have a closet shelf with a dozen Zip disks.   Just sitting there lonely.   My Intellivision is still plugged into my TV.   Hmmm 🤔

Tommy Tallarico is doing a really nice job putting this company together and promoting Amico.  But one thing you can knock him on is how he described the 2D/3D capability.

Here's an in depth interview I did earlier this week about Amico! One of the hosts was talking about it a few weeks ago but was a bit cautious about it (understandable). So I reached out on Twitter to see if we could talk about it. Was I able to convince her otherwise and put her fears to rest? Take a listen to find out! :)

I agree and will take 100% of the blame.  I was trying to communicate how harder it is for a developer to create an open world 3D experience.  The budget, the talent needed, the resources, the power of the machines, knowing the intricasies of the machine, etc.  2d & 2.5D is easier/better for those types of studios.  Amico takes all of that away... therefore making games easier/better to program on for most indie developers.  When you don't need to deal with open world 3D, everything from the engine to drivers and gameplay is a lot less taxed, thereby being able to do more things in 2D/2.5D.  But the way it came out sounded like I was saying that Amico is BETTER than the PS5 will be.  I meant it will be better to do and handle 2D, not that the technology would be better.   So yes... my bad on that one.  :) But also consider I literally had hundreds of bullet points to remember and talk about in under an hour and I had just been up all night putting the finishing touches and edits on the PRGE Launch Trailer.  :)

I think I read Intellivision plans on having promotional items to buy in 2020. But in the meantime, have you thought of releasing an official logo file and allowing a few "select" individuals (like the people registered to your newsletter) to go to their local printshop to make their own totally unofficial pre-marketing promotional items?

Don't get me wrong, I'm a grumpy old man, not a teenage girl groupie, but... I'm asking for a friend.

I consider this was your best interview.

About Moon Patrol, I'm a purist and I don't see the point of taking an old game and just changing the graphics, but now I understand what you did with it. This sounds incredibly fun.
