Intellivision Amico - Tommy Tallarico introduction + Q&A

What’s with all the Switch hate in this thread? A great product can stand on its own without needing to go after the competition. And I like what I’ve seen of Amico so far.

I don't think there is "Switch hate" at all in this thread.  Just some comments were made about the circular controller peripheral in that video that was posted.  Otherwise, I think the vast majority here appreciates and/or loves the Switch.  I haven't seen any comments bashing the console itself.

Cmart, make sure you make the push to Paul and or Tommy on the Intellivisionaries Podcast to get those corner boards in the new Amico hockey game curved instead of the mistake they made in Slap Shot Super Pro Hockey.  Thanks!

Agreed!

T look like the Amico is going to be the first console to implement a number of things:

- First modern console to include more than one controller

- First console where you can use smartphones to play

- First 3D console that focuses on 2D gameplay

- First console release where anyone can ask any question directly to the CEO of the company

- First console where all the games have multiplayer modes (to be confirmed)

- First console where "family friendly" is a requirement

If anyone can name more "firsts", feel free to add them to the list.

This would not be the first modern console to include more than one controller.  The Switch includes a joycon that consists of a right and left section that can be used by two players for many Nintendo multiplayer games.  Similarly, the PS4 has a line of games called Playlink that are designed to be played with smartphones or controllers.  Not to say that including two controllers or allowing smartphones to be used as additional controllers aren't good ideas, but they just aren't unique to Amico.

Sure there are select PS games where a phone can be used but the bullet point is specifically talking about out of the box the Amico will come with 2 complete controllers out of the box with the system not having to buy extra controllers day one like the PS systems.

That's not what the post said though.  It said that Amico would be the "First modern console to include more than one controller".  That's not accurate as every Nintendo Switch includes two joycons.  My reference to the PS4 was that it already supports smartphone and tablet play through Playlink.     As such, Amico is definitely not the "First console where you can use smartphones to play".  Like I said, it's good that both things are also true about Amico, but those things in and of themselves are not game changers.

The exact wording is important because someone is just going to see that either 1) believe it outright (which isn't right) or 2) use it a picking point that "Amico fanboys are lying again" (not that there was any lying the first time, but you know the Internet).

On the two controller item it probably just needs to be removed unless someone can reword it.

On the cell phone controller line, it is an easy fix to make it true:

- First console where all games are playable via a free cell phone app as a controller

Okay, okay... (yawn) UPDATED MEGA LIST OF AMICO FIRSTS (READ WITH CAUTION):

- First console where all the games have offline multiplayer modes (confirmed and a game changer, at least for me)

- First modern console to include more than one standard controller that you can use to play all games (unlike the Joycons! ^^)

- First console where you can use smartphones to play all (or most) of the games

- First 3D console that focuses on 2D gameplay

- First console where "family friendly" is a requirement

- First console sold in major retailers with a sub $189 launch cost (consoles launch costs & 2013 dollars) ("major retailers" because of some Chinese consoles)

- First console where all digital software titles are less than $10

- First modern console where all games are curated for quality

- First console which requires game balancing for weaker players as an option (to be confirmed)

- First console with integrated game interactive LED lighting on the console & controllers

- First modern console with no DLC, In-App Purchases, Loot Boxes or Ads

EXTRAS, COURTESY OF TT®:

- First console release where anyone can ask any question directly to the CEO of the company

- First console release where you get to interview the CEO of the company for free by simply pretending to get the price wrong or some other excuse

Of course, with the Amico, it is EVERY game. Out of the box, you can play 2-player with every game with what’s in the box. Every game can be played with a smart phone.

For the curated games point, you should include a link to the early third party Wii curation problems as an example of what you don't mean or you know it's going to become semantics.😁

I was going to mention LEDs for the hearing impaired, but I don't know if the big three ever integrate them or just sell them as a plug-in accessory or how the 3rd parties are involved, blah, blah. The whole certainty thing...😬

Four great titles. I'm hoping "not ToT" automatically means Cloudy Mountain. 😎

And as for Hockey, I'm still smarting from Paul beating me 1-0 on a PP goal last time I was down there to visit him. I look forward to gaining my revenge on the new system. 😎😂

If Paul beat you in hockey... then I would destroy you!   :D

Lol. I think I took 14 penalties and spent most of the game short handed. Wasn't my best game. 😂

No need to remind or tell us... WE KNOW!!

And one thing you can count on in the new version... I'm TOTALLY mixing in the original "THUUUUMP!" tripping sound!  :)

I've been using a lot of the original sounds and mixing them in to others to update them but still giving the original vibe.  Skiing, Night Stalker, Moon Patrol, Shark! Shark!, etc.  All utilize some original stuff.  :)

That is THE COOLEST.

Please tell me the fishing sound effects in Utopia are employed as well.

Just a little something I put together this morning for some friendly rivalry between the Amico and the VCS, slightly modified from the taco thread. Based on the old "Genesis Does" ads:

Nice.

Serious off topic question.  When does the VCS come out? I haven’t been paying attention, wasnt it supposed of already been released?

Once last fall, then it was postponed for like six months, then it became postponed indefinitely. I think they gave another estimate a short time ago, but I really don't care anymore.

The latest I heard is backers get it in December and will be available generally March 2020, subject to change of course. Hence the worry they haven’t shown games. Intellivision has a year to finish the trailer games and a few more. Atari SA has a few months or it ships to backers with nothing in the store. Not a backer but I hope that doesn’t happen for their sake.

I thought this was an Amico thread. Is there some rule where the Switch must be bowed before in order to talk about something else?

Mmhmm, yep. That’s exactly what I said.

From Tommy's Twitter, about the controller:

Quote

One of the next videos we'll be releasing is the controller in action as that seems to be a sticking point for folks who haven't played it or realize how it's being used in gameplay (which is understandable!). It's not something you can put in a press release. Needs to be seen in action or described in detail as to how it's used to interact with games.  Less than 10% of the current games could even use a normal controller so although its easy for us to add that capability (no reason not to), it will still render the vast majority of games unplayable withmodern controllers. The other thing to note is that the design of our controllers have slightly changed since our E3 prototypes this summer. So once people see the new change I know it will help folks not to worry as much. Thanks for keeping an open mind. Can't wait to share more
