Intellivision Amico - Tommy Tallarico introduction + Q&A

Recommended Posts

For a dice game, I think Liar's Dice would be great. That is my dad's favorite game. Shake the dice on your controller but then only you can see what you shook. Select the dice to share with everyone and re-shake.  The disc could control your betting. Side/Top buttons to call someone's bluff. I think it would really showcase the controller.

A couple other great card games (I mentioned 5 Minute Dungeon previously) that I think would be perfect on the Amico are Love Letter and Tussie Mussie .

I was going to chime in earlier when the discussion turned to board games and names Monopoly, Parcheesi, Operation, etc. were thrown around. Classic games like these might help to sell units, but I'm expecting the Intellivision team will chase down newer board games like the ones you are mentioning. I'm pretty sure I've heard Tommy say that board games are a bigger competitor than the other big consoles, and he's mentioned Texas Hold 'em, Catan, and of course Farkle. I'd be glad to see any of the top 500 games listed on BGG get an Amico treatment before Risk, Battleship, or Sorry. There's so much better out there than the classic 'roll and move' games and other nonsense that we endured as kids.

Great idea.  I might've gotten drunk playing Liar's Dice a time or two in university.  Hmmm, that's the next step - turning some Amico games into drinking game once the kids have gone to bed....

So wait ...

You're telling me that I put down $100.00 (which is fully refundable) to reserve a $250.00 machine which comes with two controllers (value as yet undetermined), 6 games (total value at between $18.00 and $60.00), $25.00 store credit (a value of $25.00), a signed trading card, 3 digital soundtracks (value as yet undetermined) and a 25% store merchandise discount code???

And all games going forward are only $3.00 to $10.00?

This sounds like a deal of a lifetime.

And here I was saving my money for a $500.00 machine which came with one controller (a $60.00 value) and no pack in games. Going forward games were going to be between $40.00 and $60.00.

I think I've made my decision.

Oh I think that one controller is no longer a $60.00 pack-in.. the big guys are pushing elite controllers and adding lots of extra knobs and carrying cases.. possibly a retired security guard to stand within two feet of any child playing with said controller to make sure they don't rage-quite and throw "your baby".  Those things are likely going to retail between $80-$120 for each additional controller.  Because, why not - you mostly play single player or multi-player online.. local co-op is a luxury, you gotta ante up for that.

When what started?  I heard five pack-ins from the beginning.  With issues in China increasing the console price, it became six.  He said he might consider seven.  Haven't heard them say eight.

Way early in the beginning. It was in one of those early interviews I think. It has been at 5 for a long time. 8 was never a solid number, but it was always 5 to 7 that was mentioned mainly.

I'm very interested in this as well (coming out of the disabilities tech field).  The Xbox adaptive controller probably will not integrate, even though Amico supports Bluetooth and third party controllers will be open to pair with it.  Amico is Linux-based and won't be operating Windows - the Adaptive controller only is compatible with Windows PCs/tablets and Xbox One (presumably, Series X).  But custom controllers can still be built that map to Amico.  It'd be just about the coolest thing in the world to see a tablet and 10" disc operating just like a controller that you could operate with your feet, and a couple pads as the shoulder buttons right there, tappable.  There is a lot of grant funding out their for disability tech to help improve accessibility, community inclusion, health and wellness, fine motor skill and gross motor skill improvement/assessment, even international funding with the UN's Sustainability goals.  And with Amico touting its Karma engine, local leaderboards, inclusive play, simplified game mechanics and communal vision, this system could pair so perfectly with what you're talking about.  I made a reference a few days back about how the controller's touch pad, haptic feedback and speakers, microphone could even be incorporated into certain games.  A third party could even go so far as to make a refreshable braille tablet to relay some information that can't quickly be relayed through voice or haptic.  That touchpad could indicate where things are on the television for the player to use the disc to navigate, rotate, shoot.. it could be pretty novel in the right hands.

While I think Intellivision need to be dead-focused on getting this platform launched and getting 600 projects wrapped up in the next 6-12 months for a successful launch window, I really do hope to hear from Intellivision on the topic as well.  Are they working with any accessibility consultants in play-testing or in discussions on game play?  Do they have potential partners in mind for an accessibility controller or any plans for marketing to the broader audience of people with disabilities.  It'd be an very interesting talk.

I wonder if making the amico controller app available on tablets like iPad would be a good move.

I think the 6th pack-in game for the Amico will be Bowling.

Considering how MASSIVELY popular bowling was for the Wii it's a NO-BRAINER!

I think.cornhole replaces that only because each game will be very different. So its prob the mic game and tommy didnt say it's possible.  But Texas hold em.could be another option. Or could be an edutainment title...

A little while back he mentioned like a surprise announcement about MLB license. Baseball is one of his favorite games so have thing as a pack in could be good. I would say BackTalk Party but I thought he said we would all be familiar with 4 of them (as in classics)? Which currently we have 3 remakes.

Good guess.  I suspect not Baseball, as it has less appeal in Europe and the Middle East - a major and secondary launch market for them.

No benefit in putting a game onto every system that may not resonate with entire regional audiences.

And forget selling any of my psp collection to OEB Pete...

Did you know OEB means "open every box"?????

What would happen to all my precious sealed copies of psp games.  I mean most are from Japan and I can't read them to play them but I was going to get around to learning Japanese eventually....

Lol

😂

Yea, be sure keep Pete away from Q*Bert’s boxes; poor little guy (Q*Bert, not Pete) might end up jumping in an open box.

Maybe thats what he’s been saying all these years - “@&#?!” = Pete!

i'm wondering if we will see a point and click type of adventure on the Amico..it could be done with the touch screen..how about a co-op Maniac Mansion game where you control each character at the same time with your buddies

My unofficial look says Farkle isn't trademarked. With that in mind, I'd be surprised to see a licensed game included with the console. Could happen, but I'd be surprised.

Don't put it past Tommy to make the last pack-in a new version of 2600 Combat, titled "Combat" (likely not trademarked).

A valid point. In the interest of each pack-in game being very different from one another how about Snafoo?

Well, at least I know what baseball is, while I had no idea Cornhole existed. ;)

Don't worry, I didn't know cornhole existed at all either. Then I found out that it's bean bag toss and then I realized I did know that it exists. By the way, it's got that red line under it saying that it's spelled wrong, so I guess some programs/operating systems/whatever might not recognize it as a real word.

Anyway, I'm supposed to be working from home today! Time to go actually do something constructive! Don't allow me back here until I completely redo my company's English website! I only have 2 or 3 pages left to go, though.

I'm not worrying one bit, even though I didn't know the bean bag toss game either. ;) Obviously you don't need to know the game to play it, as I said before, but I just wanted to point out it will be perceived in Europe as quite "exotic" - even more than a baseball game. I think Tommy Tallarico mentioned wanting to create a game based on bocce, the Italian version of a very popular game in France (and probably in Southern Europe). We call it "Boules" (which means Balls 😅) or "Pétanque".

Yeah, I'm curious to see what happens with the pack-ins outside USA. Speaking of culture stuff, some day I'll get around to interrogating you about the PC Engine in French culture. I'm still mildly interested in possibly getting a French SuperGrafx, for that matter, since that's the only other country I know of that actually got the thing. This is the wrong thread for PC Engine discussion, of course!

There's quite a lot to talk about indeed, but I'm not sure a "French SuperGrafx" is a thing. Basically, SODIPENG (subsidiary of Ubisoft/Guillemot) imported Japanese systems and games. They added (terrible) instruction manuals in the game boxes and probably SCART video cables for the consoles, but I'm not sure the actual systems were modded for RGB. Starting with the CoreGrafx, they used composite so you just need an adapter to connect them to a SCART socket, but you won't get a better picture of course.

The interviews are recorded and available on the internet if you care to point out which one.  I didn't think pack-ins were discussed in the early interviews. I only remember there being five until it was recently changed.  I didn't think eight was mention at all except by people here.

Combat is a registered Atari trademark and is not one of the ones licensed for Amico.  They already have Amico Armor Battle and Biplanes.  Adventure is also trademarked by Atari and licensed for Amico.

I really hope the sixth game is not one that requires english (like talking/listening game). My young boys and parents don't speak english. I think most people outside North America agrees.

Why would a talking game require english.  The microphone can record any language.
