Intellivision Amico - Tommy Tallarico introduction + Q&A

I want to share the following thoughts that I postet in the YouTube discussion about over promising (and under promising):

Tommy publicly shares a lot of information, with all of us that are interested about his new product (and his passion for it): The Amico. Even more, we are invited (to some extend) to follow the shaping process of this new product; ideas, evolving visions, changes, and eventually focussing on the final thing that will be released.

This is not common practice and we have to be thankful that we can be part of it. And we can learn a lot from it.

Even the opportunity that you can directly communicate with the inventor and father of the Amico an CEO of Intellivision Productions, Tommy Tallarico, is worth the price of the console - but of course only if you are open minded and can learn something for yourself from it.

For me, as I am involved in the development of hard- and software my whole live, it is normal that things change during this process. The reasons are manifold but inevitable and changes are not necessarily bad.

My hopes for the Amico are not that all of my own imaginations about the new Amico will be fulfilled, but rather that it finally will be even something I could not imagine. The best thing that can happen is, if something excels your own expectations or shows that  your own concerns are completely unfounded.

Given the passion of Tommy and all of his team combined with their experience in the video gaming domain I expect that they will create a great product served by a great philosophy behind it. At least we should have enough confidence to trust them.

Of course it is legitimate to criticize and discuss all aspects but to me it seems over the top to handle this topic like a criminal investigation ;-)

So im pretty new to following the Amico and basically what ive noticed is that Atari fans are the haters in the comment sections. Like a 40 year old grudge and theyre mad that the Intellivision console will have the last laugh... its pretty funny to me. A bunch of grandpas taking their dentures out for one last brawl...

I bought the Intellivision lives ps2 game to catch up on the library because this is all really fascinating. What interested me about the Amico isnt the old properties or Intellivision name at all, its the potential for new games and a new way of doing things in the console space. Sony and Microsoft took gaming far into one extreme, Nintendo is kind of floating around and relying on their IPs somewhere in the middle and their quality control is now non-existent. Overall theyre all doing similar things gameplay wise. Tommys vision for the Amico, no microtransactions, no dlc, no ads, 2d games only (this is a fantastic idea people dont realize yet), curated games only, emphasis on the Unity engine (which is fantastic for 2D). Thats where the Amico stands apart. I am also a fan of tech and like to see AMD vs. Intel and Nvidia processor battles, and Series X vs. Ps5, but none of that makes for good gameplay. It just makes for more immersive experiences. Im more interested in the Night Stalker trailer than anything i saw on the Ps5 lineup and im 29 so its not a nostalgia thing. It legit looks like a great game and would sell like crazy if it got released on Steam.

I think what a lot of gamers like the guy in the "Major Concerns 😨" video don't understand, is that there is a WEALTH of developers in the indie space that dont get the amount of attention they deserve because the main console manufacturers dont cater to 2D games. Imagine what they could do with the time and financial security Amico exclusivity deals would give them. Not only that, they would get some mentoring from a bunch of legends of the industry. They could use it. A lot of Indie games have potential but are missing the design aspect that people on Tommys team can give some direction to, to give that complete experience we get from developers at say, Nintendo. I think in the beginning months the fruits of that wont really be seen. They will be focused on getting the Amico "out there". Tommy said 20% of the Amico will be co-op party style games, 20% retro reimagined games. The Amico will have a well rounded library and people dont realize that yet because its not a point of emphasis right now. Why? He answered that question already. They dont have the new IP to show off yet. Which is totally understandable. Would I have done it differently? No. Making something from nothing requires a bullet proof strategy and Tommy has a great team of advisors. I get it. Most people don't because they are really underestimating Tommy and his team. I think they are hitting one point of their strategy at a time, starting with the sure-bets, and going down the priority list. This is where the market research and data comes in. I dont necessarily agree with that, but its not my money. I would have loved for it to be sold as a console for great games first. I would have used all the money on acquiring in house developers and making original IPs the first on the list. That wouldnt have the potential to make as much money out of the gate, but with the consumer first, developer first messaging, it could have been a home run from a pr perspective instead of constantly having to defend from negativity of people who call it a nursing home console and in their mind justifiably bash it.

In my opinion a misstep was focusing on Intellivision nostalgic collectors as the second bullet point, instead of the game loving crowd who would have eaten up all of the consumer friendly ideas of the Amico, graphics be damned. A lot of people actually love the concept of the Ouya, you could have highlighted the difference in talent and leadership between the Ouya and the Amico and i think it would have went over well. Like if the Ouya was the Atari of indie games (too much shovelware) Amico seems to be going in the Nintendo direction of strict quality assurance. This retro focus was driven more by Tommys own nostalgia of the Intellivision which in my opinion has been a stumbling block. Instead of fighting people who disagree about the controller, why not give them something you know, for them? The Wii had a controller for the more conventional games. Why not release an Amico controller like this, that has all the same functions of the regular controller (like a touchscreen)? Is it really just nostalgia based stubbornness? Just some odd choices like the overlays. I get that its something people who were kids in the 70s will appreciate but its a confusing choice for someone who didnt.

Amazon.com: 8Bitdo TG16 2.4G Wireless Gamepad for PC Engine Mini ...

The gaming industry took a sharp turn in one direction. Not in a direction gamers wanted, but in a direction their greedy investors wanted. Mobile gaming is worse and started a lot of those trends so its idiotic to me when people make the comparison of the Amico to shitty mobile gaming when its the opposite. If Tommy and the Intellivision team can deliver on what hes promised, then Amico will be all alone in the "other" direction if that makes sense. And to people saying that games need high tier graphics cards to look good they are mistaken. You dont need anything like that for 2D games.

You can run this game just fine on a $30 gpu. I guess we'll see if the Amico can deliver graphics like this, i would want to see the specs first. But it shouldnt be out of reach. Based on what Tommy has said i think its likely. If Intellivision pays a small team like this to design a game around their console specs and optimized only for the Amico, i would say its likely they would make something even better. We will see.

Lastly, I want to talk about why its such a great idea to have only 2D games.

1.) It cuts down development time

2.) More quality releases year round (if executed well)

3.) Lower priced games

4.) Amico exclusivity

5.) Nostalgia for older gaming styles

6.) Simplicity

7.) Indie development hotbed

8.) A large library full of quality games

This is an important part of Tommys strategy because hes talked about how the new games will be showcased in the store for a good amount of time. A lot of great indie games go relatively unnoticed by the general public and thats a shame. One of the reasons is because they choose to make their great games in an 8 or 16 bit style in order to get to the retro lover market and because its cheap. What if they didnt have to? The technology is there for them to make fantastic looking 2d games with the Unity engine like the one i posted above. Anyway those are just my thoughts on this. Tommy if youre reading this, my advice would be to just be patient. Let the games and the quality experiences of the Amico speak for themselves. People can talk all they want but they cant deny reality when its in their face. Also you can catch more bees with honey than with vinegar. Peace!

So what do ya think, Tommy? 30 years of classic arcade franchises, a complete lineup of game studios with nothing to develop, and the promise of an even closer relationship with their management. All for the mere sum of 4 billion! (And hey, selling the MK rights has gotta make back one or two of those billions, right?)

Yes, that’s the point I’m trying to get across. We are all used to having the Meet Amico videos drop every now and then and very frequent updates. Now that there hasn’t been anything really substantial in a while, I’m wondering why there hasn’t been. I guess I was expecting this to continue until launch.

The biggest, and really should be very obvious, reason... Covid-19 has prevented gatherings of people, and the office has been 90% shut down since March. When everybody is working from home, and social contact is frowned upon, it is very difficult to film videos! I can say that a tremendous amount of work has been happening, and the excitement and passion of the whole team is as high or higher than it's ever been.

Apropos of nothing ... listening to a Daft Punk marathon today and on Human After All my brain heard these two tracks:

  • Steve's Machine
  • Intellivision Rules the Nation

It would be SOOOO cool to have that second track in the marketing once the Amico makes like Pinky and the Brain! 😁

I've gone a head to the future...  At least in my head..  I think we will be pleasantly Surprised with a Physical Pack in game. So we all get a flavor of what to expect down the road on Day-ONE. Maybe those physical copies are only in the FE and VIP editions. The game would be .... The Atari Age Forum game! With all of us in it. Just get my good side Tommy! (Close your eyes.. That is the best side).

Thanks to Tommy and Geeks & Gamers Entertainment, we can see what Amico looked like 2 years ago, and what Amico could have been !

They were talking about the design of the next generation.

Really thank you Tommy for this gift ! That's Awesome !

Haha, yes, it all seems so obvious in retrospect, but I do like the “concept 2” and wouldn’t have had a problem if that concept would have been the one, but from “concept 3” and down they all look more like some tv projectors 😄

This may have been a very sly strategy on their part. Tommy came out of no where when he bought this beloved retro company that he grew up on, says he wants to make a new system to revive couch co-op mojo as the Intellivision originally did and no longer exists (with fresh nee games), AND has rights to release re-imagined versions and originals of epic games found no where else. This made me and other IE geeks instant fans and now we can't shut up about it. Now the word of mouth will help get non-IE fans informed and excited. Most modern gamers that didn't play IE as a kid don't naturally understand and accept this innovation as the market majority is out of focus of anything NOT the big 3 and especially NOT AAA.

So the controller comes off to the mainstream as unique and strange at first, but I feel that's important. This game market needs that. The wii did just that. It is true the wii had an optional controller that was conventional and connected to a wii-mote awkwardly, but i don't think many people used it and it kind of defeated the point of the wii.

At first I was excited for the wheel and buttons and not sure about the touch screen. Learning more im actually excited for what the touch screen can do that the conventional controllers can't. I hope IE keeps it real and doesn't give in to appeal to the mainstream.

Hi Stillagamer!

You write about a lot of things in your long posts that I can support.

But what I do not understand are all the reservations about the Amico controller. The controller you show is nothing more than a NES, SNES (so also retro) inspired controller. And I personally hat this kind of controllers. I do not want to control the direction with my left hand. One great advantage of the new Amico controller is, that it is left-right-hand symectrical and also can be used in portrait and landscape orientation (which can also be important in combination with the touch screen).

So let us see the Amico controller as something new, not so much as something that reminds to the old Intellivision controllers.

And let us also see the Amico controller as a part of the whole gaming experience.

I want to see the Amico as a complete well defined system where every part is matched with the other.

The reason I am not interested in the Switch at all is, that for me, this thing is neither fish nor fowl (portable game system or TV based game system, controller attached, controller detached). I think, this is also one of the reasons for a lot of people why they see the Switch not as a successor for the Wii.

But generally a good contribution from you.

I totally agree, it is not only the unique design that makes the controller special, it is the game style/philosophy that it is paired with. I bought the wii for these reasons, and I am buying the Amico since it is what the Wii U should have been in my opinion.

#3 reminds me too much of the Phantom game console that was basically a digital only X86 PC with a "slick" UI... Hmmmmmmm Gets me thinking about other upcoming platforms out there. The history of it is interesting. Here is a pic of it.

The controller was what sold me day 1. And I dont even compare it to the original as some do. It just isnt that similar other than the disk. It has alot more added to it. And those added features opens it to new experiences you cant get with a standard nes type controller.  And asking for one males no sense to me. The games are all engineered to work with that controller.

All you have to do is figure the math. Tommy has said that their current production numbers are limited to 35k a month.  Then subtract that preorders. Combined they are reaching 20k. So to your comment that they need to do advertising now. For what?  To sell 10k units. The cost of advertising is really expensive. Till they can produce 50k or more units there absolutely no real reason to spend money advertising on something you cant deliver on. I feel a ad campaign around the month before launch or on launch would be the best timing. Because the 1st month is already sold.

exactly, and here is the thing, going forward nothing can be assumed, we live in some weird times, as a business owner myself everything has to be taken almost day by day, right now things are getting a little more normal, but to be honest,I know my business is expecting that the worst may not even be here yet.  This virus hangs around all summer and comes back with a vengeance this fall/winter, if you arent prepared for it personally or business wise, you will be steamrolled.  Businesses are wise to hold on to what capital they have right now and spend it wisely since the 2020 nightmare may well not be over.

I think thats a very optimistic way of looking at it. Maybe im off the mark but i dont think outside of the IE or Atari fanbase anyone wanted remakes of these games. To people who didnt grow up with them, we all played some variation of them for free as flash games in the 90s and early 2000s, so thats what we get reminded of when we see asteroids or astrosmash. The retro reimagined titles could have been made 1 or 2 at a time instead of all at once. I dont know how long it took for them to be made, but its hard not to look at the games reel and think some of that energy could have gone to a new release as the showpiece. Im thinking a game that would get a high score with reviewers like earthworm jim 4. You need one of those out of the gate IMO or at least in the launch window. I would have liked ALL of those games to be games like that, and Skiing, Breakout and such to be the "We have the retro stuff too". Its what was missing from that. I want the high quality Disney feel I know the Amico can produce, because Tommys team literally made those amazing Disney games for the Genesis and Snes that shit on any Atari or Intellivision game, no offense lol. There are a lot of developers now who make games in that same spirit and really the Amico seems like a hand in glove fit. I think the retro games work best as a complimentary piece like the Virtual Console. Not the steak part of the dinner IMO. Tommy is wasting his genius on Astrosmash come on man thats not right! But i get why you and others here would be so excited for this because its so over the top and unnecessary for such simple games hahaha

Im not against the controller or the disc even. I just know there are going to be games that require a high level of precision. I would rather there be a controller with face buttons for those games than attachable sticky buttons. The disc probably is better for games like skiing but will it be better for games like platformers? Tommy said the best platformers are games like metroid, megaman, castlevania etc. Those games would just be better on a Nintendo/Turbo Grafx/Sega/Ps1 style controller. When i think of highly praised 2D games, its games that require that precision and skill or as Miyamoto would say, "athletic" aspect. Those games need exact precision! Anyone who tries to play a hard platformer or fighting game with an analogue stick immediately wants the "no miss" precision of a good dpad.

So, the buttons are never required, but are just a really nice add-on to the controller.

I always thought of them as more of a thing to make playing with the mobile app more intuitive. The mobile app is still just a mobile phone with a giant screen and no tactile indication of where to press on the screen to make things happen. So... add the attachable buttons, and suddenly your phone becomes a lot more friendly to use. Certainly not required, but a nice "quality of life" addition.

In one of the interviews he said that initially people do use the sticky buttons for the touch screen but some take it off and prefer tapping on the screen because its faster. If people are playing a game using their phone its probably a simple party game not an arcade or sidescroller game. I just dont see why the option for a conventional controller is like a taboo subject
