(Not that) offtopic: I just can't believe what is going on with The Last of Us 2. Everyone is talking about the story of the game. Hundreds and hundreds of pages about politics, characters, deaths, plot twists...

But this is a game! And I love the graphics of this game, and it looks like I could like the exploration parts, but honestly:

1) Combat, upgrading weapons... Those gameplay elements are always the same, they are tiresome and repetitive.

2) The story is not that great, folks. It's just like The Walking Dead with a bit more realism and drama and less fun, that's it.

Why am I more interested in Shark! Shark! than in The Last of Us 2? Because, even if it's super simple,

1) It's a game

2) It has no forced drama

3) It has no gore

4) People will get together to play it instead of discussing the freaking plot online

I don't understand that 99% of Sony fans in 2020 don't realize about this. I feel like I'm living in some kind of alternative reality or dream.

Imagine if people called "music" a monument tour where you entered a building such as a castle and then, every 10 minutes, some speakers played a few notes of a melody.

Imagine if people called "drama" a representation with no actors where the public just listened to songs inside a theater.

Imagine if somebody called "paintings" the works of art in an exposition which consisted of hundreds of words written on dozens of canvases, telling a story.

But nobody does that! Only video games are treated like that, and it's sad. It's sad because they should use those resources to create interactive and original experiences instead of B movies.

My biggest complaint about "video games" these days is that they're not GAMES!  They're interactive video experiences, but I do not see how they're games. The Last of Us 2 is a prime example.  It may be a great story, but it's not a game. You're not competing against anyone. There isn't a winner and loser. There isn't a score.

Obviously that's not true of all games, but for the most part, 90% of video games these days aren't games.

I tend to agree, perhaps not 90% but I get your point.  I really am tired of games that basically put you on a rail.  You basically just push buttons and jump through hoops in order to see how the story proceeds.  It was fun a few times, its really played out now.  Unless the game has many different plot lines and dozen or more different endings, I am not interested in pushing buttons to go through a story, I'd rather just watch a movie or read the book.

Good points on storylines. Pro Race Driver (part of the TOCA series) for the original XBox was an otherwise fun game, but the synchronization of the game play to a dopey storyline ruined the game for me.

I've noticed this, too.  The term "video games" has been stretched to include a multitude of different entertainment products, whose only common trait is that they offer some degree of interactivity.  I'm reminded of the taxonomy suggested by Chris Crawford in his book "Chris Crawford on Game Design" (which I'd highly recommend):

ccogd.png.c11db061abe3906aef983c35629f885f.png

By his definition, many of these interactive video experiences aren't really video games in the sense that we have always understood the term; they would be better classified as "toys" or "puzzles."  That's not to say that they're "bad" or that there isn't a market for them; it just makes it difficult to discuss video games qua video games, because so many other forms of entertainment are being lumped into the same category.

Tommy,

For the Amico shop, how is it going to work with the controller?  Will you use the touch screen to move around the shop in order to purchase a game?

Also, with the RFID card, do you need to make an account first before adding the funds onto the console?  I assume you would, dumb question I know, but thought I'd ask anyway.

hmm, former Sony exec saying games need to be shorter and cheaper...hmmm where have I heared that before   :)

https://kotaku.com/former-sony-exec-calls-for-shorter-games-that-are-cheap-1844150846

Its got to be an Italian thing. This reminds me of the what happened to the auto industry some years back. Sergio Marchionne former ceo of fiat Chrysler automotive FCA was thought to be mad to drop most of their car production and to only build SUV's.  They did this with dodge and Chrysler brand. Many experts thought this could literally bankrupt the company.  About 4 years later ford followed them by cutting all of ther car production for the exception of the mustang. Fiat came out on top and became a very profitable company and did it in a very short time after purchasing jeep Chrysler dodge right after the 08 financial crisis.

Its this that I find it funny that people think the Amico has no place in the current industry.  Wanna bet? And now former ceo of sony makes this claim. Lol everything that Tommy has been ridiculed about and OOPS who looks stupid now.

Disc is easier to navigate certain things.  Touchscreen for others.

You just need to make sure its connected to the internet and you have an account.

Interesting take!  I never thought about it in that way before... but I can totally understand what you're saying.

Makes sense to me.

well I dont believe the 'googles' in this case.. I have been in software in one way or another for over 30 years, that isnt what vaporware is. Vaporware is a software product that has been promised over a long period of time, and that has failed to materialize after missing release date after release date.  Thats vaporware.   Software on time in alpha or beta is not vaporware.

I'm not sure how that definition became 'official' on google, but there is no way around it sounding negative. I get classifying Duke Nukem Forever as it was a tease for years with loose ETA's (although it did come out and didn't age well like Brendan Fraser in Encino Man). Wouldn't a product technically have to string us along for a while in a flakey way before we should be calling it that? Otherwise it sounds sounds like you're tagging it and assuming it fails and never comes out.

We just have to accept this vocab is just another weapon in the troll arsenal for people getting a rise out of us 'shills' by either the elitist gaming haters or the nihilistic 'on the fence' folks 😜

Did you play Detroit become human ? That game was really cool. I was surprised to see how many different paths was possible and with so many different endings !

Animations are great ! Quantic Dream is one of my favorite developer.

I asked them 5 months ago if they had plans to do something for Amico.

The answer was in french :

"Nous vous remercions d'avoir posé la question mais il n'est pour le moment pas prévu de développer nos jeux sur la plateforme AMICO.

Nous y arriverons peut-être un jour mais ce n'est pas encore dans nos plans."

Google translate :

"Thank you for asking the question, but there are currently no plans to develop our games on the AMICO platform.

We may get there someday but it is not yet in our plans."

They all look great. And interestingly all where also available as Matchbox cars and with great box art by the way too.

I was the one to offer the google definition to illustrate that the current accusation, while technically correct by some known definitions, actually had no real teeth, and therefore was not really damaging. Even PlayStation 5 and new Xbox would fit that definition, so not bad company to be in.

Was trying to illustrate the troll weapon was just a cap gun, but what the heck do I know, I am an Oldfool.

Excuse me for this last selfish dumping off of my chest:  there is another historical component to “vaporware” concerning announcing very early to affect products already in market, thereby feeding the light interpretation that it is all products advertised and not available. Developing software for someone directly is generally a professional services contract, and not a product. Cease and desist requests are generally a request to avoid judicial proceedings, and are not a judgement or victory in themselves. I am not a lawyer, so do not take any of my statements as facts, but I am an Oldfool. I will be returning to The Googles to seek truth. Peace to all, but stay off of my lawn!
