Something that folks don't need to worry about with Amico.

And in regards to kids...

The "parents just need to parent" thing only goes so far.

I wonder if parents would rather not even need to worry about it instead of having to monitor or set controls.

I know the answer.

:)

(Not that) offtopic: I just can't believe what is going on with The Last of Us 2. Everyone is talking about the story of the game. Hundreds and hundreds of pages about politics, characters, deaths, plot twists...

Played the 1st one have really no desire to play the 2nd one. For many of the same reasons you mentioned.

But this is a game! And I love the graphics of this game, and it looks like I could like the exploration parts, but honestly:

1) Combat, upgrading weapons... Those gameplay elements are always the same, they are tiresome and repetitive.

True I'm ok with the combat upgrading  not so concerned with.

2) The story is not that great, folks. It's just like The Walking Dead with a bit more realism and drama and less fun, that's it.

Why am I more interested in Shark! Shark! than in The Last of Us 2? Because, even if it's super simple,

1) It's a game

2) It has no forced drama

3) It has no gore

4) People will get together to play it instead of discussing the freaking plot online

Yes to all, I actually likeed the uncharted series more. And dont want to play the forced drama and gore I definitely try to steer clear of.

I don't understand that 99% of Sony fans in 2020 don't realize about this. I feel like I'm living in some kind of alternative reality or dream.

Well probably but I believe many of us are in that dream too lol ....HI 🙋‍♂️

Imagine if people called "music" a monument tour where you entered a building such as a castle and then, every 10 minutes, some speakers played a few notes of a melody.

Imagine if people called "drama" a representation with no actors where the public just listened to songs inside a theater.

Imagine if somebody called "paintings" the works of art in an exposition which consisted of hundreds of words written on dozens of canvases, telling a story.

But nobody does that! Only video games are treated like that, and it's sad. It's sad because they should use those resources to create interactive and original experiences instead of B movies.

This has been my response as well. Like when people say a type of game or the Amico is out of date or too simple. Do we say that about movies, art, and music? Or do we appreciate them? Why should gaming be any different.

My son still enjoys galaga and theres jo mention of it feeling dated. Just a different experience .

Lastly as the former president of sony just said, he didn't feel the gaming industry can sustain itself on its current path with games being so long and costly. So whats that tell you?  Tells me people dont have time nor will pay for it. But they will likely play something that less involved and includes get people together .

OK.  Thanks for clarifying your definition.

I disagree with your personal definition... and that's fine... I'm guessing you would disagree with my definition.  :)

To me... vaporware has a sense that it may not come out.  Its set aside for things that are ideas that may or may not be real or ever come out.

But I acknowledge that the "official" definition is what you are saying.

In (what I and most people I think believe to be the modern and real definition) the case of Amico, the PS5 or XBOX X... those are not vaporware.  There is a 100% chance (not 99%) that all of these items will come out.  So for me... I do not personally classify them as "vaporware".

But again... thanks for clarifying your position.  I'm off to play my vaporware some more.

:)

The industry’s definition is what most go with and it has a negative intonation when used.  I mean who hasn’t heard the vaporware label attached to Duke Nukem forever, The Last Guardian and Diablo 3?  When it was used with those games, prior to their eventual release, no one will convince me it was used simply to describe a game that wasn’t “out”, rather a game that likely won’t come out.  It is used in our parlance as a derogatory term

this doesn’t mean I think keatah used it wrong, he didn’t.  If he says that is what it means to him, I’m cool with that.  But I sure as heck don’t think it’s wrong for people to raise an eyebrow when it’s used in THIS thread considering some of the negative nannies and their ‘position‘ when they pop in here every now and then

Technically I don’t think Keatah is wrong, if you believe The Googles:

va·por·ware
/ˈvāpərˌwer/

noun
INFORMALCOMPUTING
  1. software or hardware that has been advertised but is not yet available to buy, either because it is only a concept or because it is still being written or designed.

well I dont believe the 'googles' in this case.. I have been in software in one way or another for over 30 years, that isnt what vaporware is. Vaporware is a software product that has been promised over a long period of time, and that has failed to materialize after missing release date after release date.  Thats vaporware.   Software on time in alpha or beta is not vaporware.

Regarding the term vaporware, the official definition misses a critical part and therefore incomplete.  For something to be vaporware before its release date, there must be a strong and justified belief it will not not be released (or that it will not be released while it is still relevant).  Mere belief alone is not enough; the belief needs to be backed up by solid reasoning.

For example, Apple's iOS 14 and Google's Android 11 have both been announced but not released.  Thus, they fit the technical but incomplete definition of vaporware.  However, no one is calling those vaporware since these companies have a strong track record of delivering.  Thus, they don't fit the actual definition of vaporware.

I know the answer.

Sexual predators can lure kids with all sorts of things, having a sexual predator in the room is worse than having one across the country.  Parents do need to parent , its not an easy job since there are threats everywhere, often times within their own extended family. So a system that requires people to be in the same room isnt without risk unfortunately, parents sill have to be watchful because the threat may not be online, but in that room.

To me vaporware is very simple. A product that is talked about, announced, but still not available for me to take home and play with - that's how I see it. Right or wrong. It also applies to to PS and XBOX. So when they come out they come out. Till then it's just talk.

This is just a ludicrous position to take, and you are quite wrong with your definition of "vaporware".  I guess any single product announced by any company that hasn't yet been released that's vaporware?  Even though there's a clear target release date somewhere in the future?  No, that's not vaporware, that's just a product that hasn't been released yet.  If the release date comes and goes and the product is nowhere to be found, then, yeah, you can then start talking about vaporware.  Otherwise you are just being ridiculous.  And to apply this to Sony and Microsoft who are obviously going to release their products is basically tantamount to trolling.

all I know is if my company is working on new important piece of govt software and if any of our competitors or person of influence ever refereed to our upcoming software as vaporware, they would be hearing from our lawyers the next day with retraction demands and cease and desist demands.  Its not a word to throw around lightly.

Agreed this was ranked as 5th in all time vaporware.  Also this concept that everything is vaporware time is its in the store is furry and wrong.

I agree.  I looked it up yesterday as well.  According to the "technical" definition, he is correct.

I just don't think that people use or think of that term in that way anymore.  The definition should be updated for what it has really become at this point.

I don't think most people would categorize the PS5 as "vaporware".  But I could be wrong.  It may just mean something different to me.

I think the definition in the german Wikipedia reflects more what we think of it:

Als Vaporware werden Produkte bezeichnet, deren Fertigstellung bzw. Auslieferung mehrfach oder um längere Zeit verschoben oder nie verwirklicht wurde. Der Begriff wird besonders bei Verzögerungen bei Computerspielen verwendet.

Translated to English:

Vaporware refers to products whose completion or delivery has been postponed several times or for a long time or has never been realized. The term is used particularly for delays in computer games.

Considering how the last several pages devolved into a discussion of vaporware I'll simply take the position of I'll believe it when I see it.

Till it hits the store shelves in mid-October (and to the delight of many) I'll not have anything more to say in the thread.
