Damn... these special editions are expensive!!

Oddly enough, I was just working with Mattel last week and going through all of the Hot Wheels designs this weekend picking the ones that we'll be putting in the game.

Post your favorites from this link:

Under MAKE, please sort by HW Original.  Those are all of the Hot Wheels original designs (i.e. not licensed car manufacturers, etc.)

There are some cool TRON inspired ones that will be making the cut!!

When you sit and do the math, it seems to me that the best option is to keep with what I have, and add an Amico or two in the future. Then wait and see if either the PS5/XBSX really provide anything worth having.

I am just seeing mostly the same thing out of both camps, except it looks better (sometimes). About the only new trailer game which might temp me was Hogwarts Legacy BUT it is coming to PC too, so never mind. Plus the big players are still maneuvering with XBox buying Bethesda, but we already knew Starfield was coming to XBox so what does that bring XBox anything that is really new? Both sides also seem to be spreading most of their games onto PC too and that market is getting more competitive with NVIDIA and AMD launching new graphics cards. Maybe it is just better to sink that $500 into a new graphics card? I don't think console gamers will really have an idea about how these consoles are going to shake out until late 2021 or maybe even 2022.

Hey Tommy,  Odyssey II had a light gun rifle, NES had a light gun pistol.  I think the Amico would be perfect for a state of the art light gun feature.
At one time you mentioned that you we’re working with Mattel on new licensing for the Amico.  How about a new version of the old Mattel Lie Detector game?

Although not our target audience, IGN has actually done 2 stories on Amico over the past few years and a bigger feature/interview is being planned.

The biggest video game magazine is Game Informer.  We have a big feature and interview in next months issue.  Will be online as well.  I'll post it if @Intellivision Master doesn't beat me to it!

I personally would love to see some kind of first-party RPG from the development studio.

But that's just a suggestion in case the team needs food badly or somethin' because I know you guys have your hands full at the moment.

:)

Definitely gotta get the original Gauntlet as a Retro Re-imagined title on Amico at some point!

Just nice to see - Val Vacante was the host for several round tables Tommy has spoken at in different conferences. Plus she is in the local Austin tech scene, founder of Collabsco and works with the SXSW tech/art/music event each year in Austin.

She's GREAT!  Well deserved!

I agree. I'm sitting this one out this turn around. People are getting so caught up in the hype of "which console should I buy?" that they never stop and ask themselves if they should buy one at all.

Other points to be made are that in a few years, when support for PS4/XB1 starts to die off, both Sony and Microsoft will probably be launching their slimmed down versions that are small and more power efficient. By that time, there will be some exclusive games you can only play on the new systems.

There are also technical reasons for holding off. People seem to be falling over themselves right now waiting to put down $500 on a  system that they know little about. Will there be huge issues like the XB360 had? The PS4 launched with a lot of people having video issues with the HDMI ports. Switch had its notorious "drift" issues or controllers not connecting. Why spend all that money just to be a QA tester for these companies? If I knew at launch that PS4 was going to turn into a roaring jet engine every time I wanted to play a visually stunning game, I would have waited.

Plus these new games aren't really "new" in that they're really more of what we got in the past. Also, they'll be a lot more expensive. The controllers are expensive. The peripherals are expensive. Maybe Xbox will be cheaper since it seems like the old controllers will still work with it, but it's still expensive.

Maybe I'm somewhat of a hypocrite since I am getting two Amicos at launch, but there I'm getting two consoles, four controllers, and the ability to add more controllers with the phones already in my house (plus something like $70 worth of gift cards). Games will be smaller and more affordable. They'll also be unique and experiences I can't get on a PlayStation/Xbox. When you sit and do the math, it seems to me that the best option is to keep with what I have, and add an Amico or two in the future. Then wait and see if either the PS5/XBSX really provide anything worth having.

You make a lot of great points.

The "wait and see" attitude is definitely seems to be the norm as with every new console from any era over the past 30 years the "bell curve" of sales doesn't really explode until year 3 and 4.  Same for Amico I'm sure.

Holding a gun and shooting would probably be a very controversial thing for Amico.  Maybe if it was a squirt gun type of game with a squirt gun type of controller!

You can't really do "light guns" on modern TV's because of the lack of scan lines of CRT's.  Would need a special set up and technology, which is why you don't see many in the marketplace anymore.  Also (unfortunately) I think it would quickly become a political issue as well.

Check out this reddit link that a friend sent me yesterday.

Almost 2,000 comments since yesterday.

Some of my favorite comments (and remember... these are HARDCORE gamers responding):

"Good graphics" doesn't mean cutting edge photorealism. Good graphics effectively convey the necesarry information and aesthetic to the player regardless of style or tech level. Ever play Asteroids in an arcade cabinet where everything is really sharp and you can see that crazy pin line shining? Games can hardly have more minimal graphics than that but the effect in person is fantastic.

I think the industry tends to push the idea that more realist = better graphics but it’s can suck the creativity and expression out of games.

Cartoon style graphics last. Classic WoW is another example of stylized graphics that stuck around. Games that go for realism don't really tend to last the test of time.

I think Minecraft proved this 10 years earlier.

Nintendo proved it 10 years before Minecraft.

A game obviously is going to be more fun with friends. It should be a good game on its own and a great game with friends.  Gridiron is a great example of this. On its own, it's a shitty football game that's broken 90% of the time, but with friends and a few beers, we're having a ton of fun and laughing so hard we can't breathe.

For group gameplay, this is absolutely true.

Well graphics are important too. Just not for party games

I feel like people confuse cartoon art styles with bad graphics.

World's most popular games are not graphically demanding titles , Valorant , CSGO , Fall Guys , Fortnite , Minecraft etc..  It's not a coincidence.

Imagine having friends to play with.

I agree, all I am getting is shine and a scary *ss looking Jim for all of the light rays & pixel pushing. He has lost all his approach-ability.

Okay everyone... lets all share our favorite giraffe shots.  :)

San Diego Zoo.  We spent the weekend at Legoland Hotel.  It was a needed break after working three 24 hour shifts in a row on Labor Day during the heat storm.  I'm a power lineman in Anaheim and the heat caused a lot of outages.  Most people don't realize we exist as a career and also the amount of human lives lost on a regular basis to keep our power on.  It really makes you think about what and who's important in life each day.

So what are the chances of Intellivision making the first ever video game about a lineman?  Nintendo did one about a plumber..... just sayin'
