Intellivision Amico - Tommy Tallarico introduction + Q&A

Recommended Posts

And thank you Tommy for this Forum. Working 18 hours a day, and spending some time with us is really appreciate.

Some questions now :

1- Games that will be remade, will they have some cinematics ? For exmaple, in Lock n chase, I think we are a sort of thief. So can we have some scene at the beginning, between some stage, etc, or is it only better graphics and sound ?

Same thing for Microsurgeon, we see a patient at hospital, in Astrosmash a vessel when completing a stage going on another planet, or things like that !?

2- I know that at that time there was not much text or voice, but I am hoping you will now add that to remade games ? And if yes, it will probably not be a lot, so do you think at having games in french ? :) Can you tell us what your team means by remade ? Maybe an exemple ?

3- Did all the old intellivision game (not remade) will be available at launch ? At what price ?

That's all the questions for now. I know some other questions can probably be answered only at E3, because there's a lot of secret right now ! :)

Looking forward for how all these games will be played with this controller.

Same thing for physical release and what will be so special about it !

THANKS !! And please, take cake and take some time to sleep ! lol

Hi!,

Thank-you for your passion and the kind words! We won't let you down!! I look forward to hopefully playing the NEW Intellivision with your someday! :)

Answers to your questions...

1. Yes. I definitely see some of the games have cinematic moments. Not very long (like Metal Gear!)... but maybe something quick and fun. Not all games... maybe just a few here and there. I'm already working on the Moon Patrol storyline. :)

2. We don't really say "remade"... we say... "reimagined". Which basically means we keep the "heart" of the game and the simplicity and game mechanics... but completely upgrade the graphics and audio AND then add really cool couch co-op/local multiplayer options as well. When adding multiplayer this changes the dynamics of how the games are played... but this becomes a very good thing and opens up each game to a new and different way to play them as opposed to JUST the original way. We typically are having at least 2 different ways to play. CLASSIC or MULTIPLAYER.

3. Yes! We will have a lot of the vintage/old/original Intellivision games available on launch... and they will be much cooler to play with the new controller! :) We will probably be selling them in packs. So, for example... 10 games for $5.99 or something like that. We haven't decided pricing just yet... but it won't be a lot per game. :)

Thanks! Can't wait for you to play the new system!!!!!

You are doing a fantastic job of hyping me up for it. The biggest selling point for me is that you seem to promise a lot BUT ITS ALL FEASIBLE, clearly explained and with the lack of advanced crowdfunding requested , shows that plan is backed financially (which means there’s REAL support behind it)

I’ve become more of a digital distribution fan over the years (probably due to “out of control “ laziness eheh) so your distribution model, price point, reimagining of the game’s, etc; you seem to be hitting all the right checkmarks. I’m looking forward to it more and more

Heck all of the this talk has really got me juiced about this new Intellivision! I always enjoyed my Intellivision when I was a kid but this new system is doing a great job of hyping me up for the Amico, just in time to save me from buying a PS4 or Xbox!

As much as I have been impressed with what I have seen so far with regard to the Amico, the tone deaf response to the questions being raised about Doug TenNapel being attached to the new Earthworm Jim game are a real issue for me. It's not like the guy made some bigoted statements in private, he is someone who is very actively and publicly pursuing an anti-gay agenda. Very disturbed about this.

Don't like reading things from people who are biased or easily triggered. I really don't think this is the place for that type of article. Twitter maybe?

You mean people who may actually be impacted by the negative impacts of such discrimination?

Ok I'm only going to say this once. Please keep the conversation civil. It's alright to voice concerns and opinions, but I don't want this thread to spiral out of control or get too far off topic. We have a very wide range of values and beliefs on this site and we need to respect that. Let's not start arguing with each other, that's what Facebook is for.

Mr. Tallarico, I would encourage you to maintain Doug TenNapel's input on the new Earthworm Jim game. As the creator of Earthworm Jim, it would be a shame if "politics" got in the way of his inclusion. It would be the same mistake that Disney almost made by removing James Gunn from GOG 3 ... I believe that they made the right decision by bringing him back.

I'm looking forward to the new console and a new game in the Earthworm Jim series. So far, I'm impressed with what I've seen and heard and the Earthworm Jim announcement was a huge step in bringing legitimacy to the project. Keep up the good work!

Everything I've seen about the Amico has got me excited. Here are my questions:

1. We know the original Intellivision was a Mattel product, and that Intellivision Entertainment is it's own separate entity. Any possibility of a collaboration with Mattel for games based on toys licenses like Hot Wheels, Barbie, ect similar to the recent Coleco handhelds utilizing the Rainbow Brite and Robotech brands?

2. Earthworm Jim was recently announced as an Amico exclusive. Going with 90s console-marketing logic, does that make Earthworm Jim the "face" of Amico alongside the obvious examples like Mario, Sonic, and the like?

3. In one of your live streams, you said something along the lines that Amico wasn't going to support streaming services like Hulu and Netflix. UK-based company, Antstream just successfully crowd-funded their retro gaming streaming service that's going to be available on a variety of platforms. Would Antstream have a place on the Amico, or does is break the streaming service/exclusive games only rule?

Thank you for your time, and I can't wait for E3!

Hi again Tommy !

Now I think I saw everything there was to know about your new project. (What's public).

And I saw other things too that help me understand why some people are sceptical. ( Ouya, Coleco Chameleon, Atari VCS ).

It made me nervous only about 5 minutes, but I am extremely confident and positive about your company and the Amico.

And you are the guy that can bring it to reality with your team.

Questions

1) You said 6 months ago that developers kits will be shipped next summer ( so probably this summer in 2019 ).

If a game can take beetween 6 and 12 months ( With exception like Earthworm Jim and triple A games ) so we should have no problems to have some games at launch.

So here's the question : Did your team have begin to work on some new games, not just writing, concept or idea ?

2) You said that a new console need to have THE GAME that will help sell the system. Earthworm Jim will not be ready for launch. Do you have THE GAME that will help attract people at launch ?

3) One problem in the 80's (for me) was that sports game could be only played with another human. I know we want to found the same satisfaction as before, playind with real

people in the same room, but will it be possible to play against AI if someday I am alone and that I want to play Baseball ?

4) I have never played Shark Shark, but I looked at some video, and that was a game with a good idea.

I know that it will be one of the game "reimagined", so with this exemple, what can you tell us ?

Will it only be new graphics and sound, with the fish only able to move within the limits of the screen, or will it be bigger ? Screen scrolling up and down, right and left, etc. ?

5) Will you translate games in french. Don't be shy if it's not, I just want to know. I will buy your console anyway. :) (I have said to my 7 year old boy that he absolutely need to learn english if he wants to enjoy even more things in life ! ;) lol )

6) Will it be possible to see your conference on youtube this June ?

Long live to Intellivision Entertainement, old and new fans, and Blue Sky Rangers ... :)

Thank you Tommy Tallarico.

Thanks! It is a challenging thing to do... if it was easy then everyone would do it (and many have tried and failed miserably) but the one thing we have that the others didn't (including Ouya) is over 600 years of video game industry experience JUST on our core internal team! I've been surrounding myself with getting the BEST of the BEST around me. We have 2 other MAJOR folks that we are announcing soon. I'm talking CEO level people who left TOP companies to work with us (no... Reggie isn't one of them).... yet. :)

The key is that we are not trying to compete with hardcore technology... we are staying in our lane, our focus is families & friends and simplicity. We can't compete in budgets with Microsoft, Google, Sony, Nintendo, etc.. but we CAN compete with IDEAS! And that's what is going to make people really stand up and pay attention. So many incredible things that haven't been announced... and a lot of which won't even be announced until next year! But this summer people will start to get a small taste of the things we are accomplishing. It's going to be a super fun 2 years! I'm looking forward to it. Thank-you for keeping an open mind and believing in us. I won't let you or anyone else down. :)

Hahahhaa! Don't do it!! Wait for ours!! ;)

We think we're going to grab a lot of those millions of people who haven't purchased a system since the Wii (hopefully tens of millions!) but even for the 200 million hardcore gamers... I think there is a good portion who will end up getting an Amico as well as a secondary machine that they can play when their non-gaming friends and family come over... or, if they want a quicker casual experience at home. Time will tell! But we're lining up everything we can for success.

http://mostly-retro.com/2013/06/02/on-doug-tennapel-bigotry-and-supporting-hate/

My statement on the matter was very clear and was covered by many many outlets, websites social media and YouTube videos. So to say that there was a "tone deaf" response and that you have an "Issue" with that isn't really being that fair is it? So because you didn't see the thing that a lot of people were discussing last weekend (literally millions of people on YouTube and websites) that you have an issue and you're "very disturbed by this"? I'm just wondering how hard you bothered to look? I guess I just didn't like the way your phrased your comment. I apologize if I am reading it out of context. This was my statement in case you missed it...

"I totally respect everones right to decide whatever the heck they want. No worries. The reality is if we do the game with Doug, some people may get upset. If we did the game without Doug, other people would be upset. So it's a no win situation no matter what as it's absolutely impossible in this day and age to please everyone. But it's very important to know that although Doug was the creator of the actual character, it was the entire team of 10 of us who created the experience that everyone knows and loves. A complete team effort with no one having more important opinions or visions over anyone else. Making the game with the original team is the only true way to keep it 100% authentic."

Now... that being said... you (and others) are wrong about Doug TenNaple. Some friendly advice... don't believe everything you read on the internet. I've seen Doug's statements (and my own) taken completely out of context. I'm not saying I agree with any of his statements... I'm just saying they've been taken out of context to form a narrative against him. He may have different politics than you, but he is not a bigot and he's not pursuing an anti-gay agenda. All you need to do is go on his own YouTube channel and hear the open discussions he has with people in the LGBTQ community. I'd also like to share an e-mail I received recently...

Hey Tommy,

I recently heard about the nonsense outrage surrounding Doug.
I wanted to reach out to you and thank you for continuing to work with Doug TenNapel; I identify as trans, and I had the absolute pleasure of speaking with Doug on his YouTube stream a few weeks ago.
We discussed a number of things, one notable thing was gender identity. I was very impressed with Doug's candor during the talk, and have nothing but the utmost respect for him and believe this recent online buzz about his opinion about trans people is nothing more than hyperbole.
Very much looking forward to the Amico, and Earthworm Jim! Have always been a fan of that series and excited to see what you are doing with Intellivision.
I don't know if you remember, but we did correspond last year regarding promoting your Video Games Live in Kitchener as well. Just wanted to reinforce Kitchener Comic Con's support for you, your team and Doug!
Would love the opportunity to push some media for the Amico, as well.
Hope all has been well, best of luck and keep up the great work!

I'd also like to point out (not that I need to), but Intellivision currently has 3 transgender folks working for us. Pretty funny considering that people were comparing me to Hitler because I refused to kick Doug off the team. One final note I'd like to add... although there were hundreds of people complaining on Twitter about Doug.... there were tens of thousands of people who spoke out with another point of view on the matter. Here is just one small example from "The Quartering": https://youtu.be/CmPLV_Ve2QU Over 500,000 subscribers, 160,000 views on the video and nearly 3,000 comments on the video.

Anyway... as the mod stated... we don't want to turn this into a political thread, but I did feel the need to at least address your concern that we have been silent regarding the matter. That statement was false and hopefully you now have a better understanding of where we stand on the matter. Doug will not be removed from the project.

Thanks.

So has there been discussions as to what type of graphics this thing will pump out?

The graphic style is different for every game. But I will say this... if you like Ori & the Blind Forest... you're gonna LOVE the new Astrosmash!! (which is just one of the games that comes FREE with every console!). AND WAIT TIL YOU SEE NIGHT STALKER!!!!! OH MY!!!!! :)

We are mixing a lot of 2D & 3D together. It's not going to compete with anything the current gen of systems are doing... but we don't need to because of the games we're making and the STYLE that we are achieving. That being said... I believe people will be very impressed with the direction we are going with art and graphic style. But again... every game is different so there isn't really a standard "look".

More to come soon!

Thanks! Yes... Doug is and will be a part of the new Earthworm Jim game. It wouldn't be a true Earthworm Jim game if ANY of the 10 of us weren't involved.

Everything I've seen about the Amico has got me excited. Here are my questions:

Would Antstream have a place on the Amico, or does is break the streaming service/exclusive games only rule?

Thank you for your time, and I can't wait for E3!

1. Yes... we are already having those discussions! And you forgot a MAJOR one... He-Man!! :)

2. No, I wouldn't say that. Earthworm Jim is his own thing and quite frankly... we have even bigger names and exclusives coming to the console that I can't mention yet. This was just a small nugget because we were starting our design meetings and I thought it would be cool to let the world know and to show us all in a room together again (which hadn't happened since the end of EWJ 2 over 24 years ago!).

3. That's a good question. I never want to say NO to anything. For example... if Disney's new streaming service is a home run and families are BEGGING us to add them to the console because of the family friendly content... then it is something we would consider. My point in the earlier podcasts was that we are focused first and foremost on being a video game console for family & friends. I'm still trying to honestly figure out who the heck the new Atari machine is targeted for?? My other point was that people can stream stuff from anywhere these days. From their mobile devices to their freakin' refrigerators! (not making that up!)

So if another "icon" appears on Amico... will that confuse a non-gamer? Will my mom understand why the Disney channel is on her Amico?

Something up for discussion... but we would have to have a very compelling reason that makes sense for our audience in order to start down that path.

Thanks for the questions!

Thank you Tommy Tallarico.

Thank you for the kind words and for your belief in me and the project.

1. The "official" Dev Kits will be available in September but people have been making games since the beginning of the year. We have our test boards (and in some cases have sent them to our developers) for optimization purposes. We currently have over 22 games in development with top hand-picked developers from around the world! People can start the games in Unity given our speed requirements and can be run on certain devices that have the same chip and power (mostly) than what our machine is capable of. When graphics and power aren't the main focus of the game... it's easy to create something fun that can later be optimized. Our approach is that style and gameplay are more important than power graphics and super chips. At least for our system.

2. We actually have many potentials in this area. And I think the entire pool that we will have on launch (around 40+ games) are all top quality. So even if we don't have "the game" initially... we will have 40 SUPER SOLID 8 or 9's out of 10 (as opposed to just one 10 and a bunch of mediocre stuff). That is the goal. It's a lofty one for sure... but with over 600 years of video game expertise just on our core team... you can bet that we know a thing or two about what makes a good game. :)

3. YES! Even the original Intellivision started doing that by the mid 80's. If you look at the later baseball & hockey games for example... they had AI single player modes!

4. You need to keep the screen of Shark! Shark! stable because going close to the edges is part of the risk/reward factor. That being said... we are adding some very cool gameplay elements to the game... but of course... if people wanted to play "CLASSIC" mode... they can!

5. We have a European operation already up and running. Big announcement happening about this at E3. Amico will be available in France for sure and having the ability to change languages in the OS will be a must.

6. I will be doing certain big interviews that will be streamed live. I just don't know where and when yet. I'll keep this community posted!

Thanks for the questions.

I'm sorry, but at no point did I say you failed to respond. What I said is that your response was tone deaf. Your response was essentially, "we will get complaints no matter what we do, so we are going to just do what we want to do and everyone is free to support us or not". While that is an honest response, it's also a false equivalency. I don't know if you have ever faced bigotry or discrimination in your life, but it's not something that could or should be evaluated on a scale of popular opinion. If it was, this country likely would still have segregated schools and other discriminatory practices codified into the law as it did prior to the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

While I respect the fact that you may have a personal relationship with Mr. TenNapel, I find it hard to believe that he would openly engage in the bigoted language and conduct around you that he has around others in the numerous instances that have been documented online. Frankly, as far as I know, you are not part of any of the groups he seems to hate. The fact that you found one person who identifies in a particular way to support Mr. TenNapel is not evidence that he is not a bigot. Indeed, it's the logical equivalent of someone who is a racist saying they "have a black friend". That might be true, but it's also true that someone can still be a bigot and a racist despite such a friendship. Equally so, not every member of a group that is discriminated against will see the discrimination in the same terms. Indeed, there are some people who have objectively faced discrimination as a result of their gender or race but who would either not agree that they were discriminated against or simply see it as the way things are in the world.

So, while I agree that this should not become a political thread, you and your company have made an openly political choice and taken an approach that I do not believe is consistent with anything I would associate myself with as a long time classic gamer. The impact in the marketplace of your choice is yet to be seen, but I think your further response here has made it clear that you simply don't understand the complexities of the position you have taken.

Your response doesn't surprise me. Our response doesn't have anything to do with "popular opinion" and everything to do with doing the right thing for the project and the fans. If hard right Republicans demanded that we take a transgendered person off the project... I would have the same response. Get it? Just because the numbers don't support your narrative doesn't mean you try to turn around the facts to justify your thoughts and opinions. THAT my friend is a REAL "false equivalency". :) You're not interested in hearing anything that doesn't fit your narrative and the decision you have already made based on misinformation and what the "internet" says. Just a little word of advice... until you've gone to Doug's YouTube channel and actually hear and listen to the discussions he's had with the LGBTQ community... I suggest you stop with the whole "he's a bigot" and he "hates" certain people. Who is the real "hater" in this instance? So lets just leave it at that. The reality is that there is ZERO chance that you are going to change your mind... and you're not interested in hearing additional information that doesn't support your decision. Even when the people who you say are being discriminated against come out and defend Doug because they actually had a civil discussion with him and realize that things on the internet aren't always what they seem. That's a little different from "having a black friend". Once again... "false equivalency" isn't it? But your response is... "that person who stuck up for Doug just doesn't realize they are being discriminated against".

Again, let me state again that I or Intellivision in no way endorse, condone or agree with some of the statements made by Doug. But I would say that about 99% of the people I know.

But when you say our company has made an openly political choice it shows how you are wired for this discussion. See... it's hard to have real conversations with people who have that narrow minded a spectrum. You know what you know and don't want anyone to tell you different. Your mind is clearly not open to hearing other truths... you just want to believe what you want to believe and you're against anyone who says anything against the narrative you have come up with. When I told you to go to his page and listen to the discussions with the LGBTQ community you REFUSED and started responding to me ASAP. You weren't interested in receiving information that doesn't fit the narrative that others have constructed for you because of their own agendas. That's fine. Everyone lives life different. In your mind you are convinced that I don't understand the complexities of the position I have taken. I guess I could say the same thing about you. But I won't because the truth is obvious to anyone who is willing to take the time to actually keep an open mind and do a little research. So when you say you aren't going to support a company because you would never want to be "associated with" a certain approach... what you are also saying is that you don't want to associate with a company who has openly said we currently have 3 transgender people working for us. I believe in that instance you would be labeled as an anti-LGBTQ person by certain people. Something to think about and consider.

TO THE MODERATORS: This is my FINAL interaction with this person and with this subject. I also do not want this thread to be taken over by political biases on any side. I'm completely okay to delete my entire account and never return if this place is just going to become a cesspool of people arguing politics or religion. And I know that the mods don't want that as well. So if I've broken any rules by responding, I understand and I'm fine to leave. I just refuse to let someone put words in our mouths about what we do and don't believe and what we do or don't support. And if that's against the rules... I understand and I have no problem leaving with no hard feelings. I don't want to be the person who brings this place to something not associated with classic gaming.

As they say, you had me at "hello". Astrosmash was my fav Intellivision game, loved it and played it to death, you have a guaranteed sale here. The problem I see right now is the wait time, launch date is way too far. Maybe we can get Disney to lend us an avenging quantum time displacement device.

As for the other stuff, all has been said, you expressed your POV eloquently, you have mine support as many others. Never mind politics, let's all remember you can't please everyone so best to just move on.
