Intellivision Amico - Tommy Tallarico introduction + Q&A

I like the retro extra ships too...  I am guessing they are communal?

How would they display in a Versus mode?

Just throwing this out...  Seems the early adopters could be alpha/beta testers even if regulators have not yet approved the console... ;)

looking really good Tommy and the Amico team!

Happy New Year to you, your family and all the folks at IE working through this mess we call modern living!

What a great video!  The game looks really well polished and a lot better than previous videos show.  The gravity physics are just amazing and make for some really cool effects and challenges.

Such a cool take on the original "Spinners" and "Guided Missiles".  Really looks like a lot of fun to play... I even see a level boss in there?  Great touch.

Sounds, effects, movements, and all around well done!

Can't wait to have this unit on the shelf and in "stand-by" mode!  LOL!

JR

PS... I've been reading on the Retropie forum that some first gen users of the new VCS system are already installing Retropie on it and asking how to get things loaded.  Although this might be a great option to some, in my opinion... I don't see it as being that advantageous.  I'd rather have a dedicated console playing games that are dedicated to the proprietary software it was developed for.  Paying what they're asking for a VCS and having it become yet another multi-game system to me defeats the whole purpose of buying it in the first place.  I'm glad you and the team at IE went the path that you did from day one.  I don't want yet another platform for Retropie.  I'm so looking forward to this release... whenever it happens.  LOL.

That's silly.

Why buy a new console just so you can load an interface for emulators to play other games?  Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

If you are smart enough to get retropie/emulationstation/etc up and running, then why bother? It's already a self contained unit.  Retropie has so many things to configure to get things right. I've got over 4000 games from 20 different systems on my bartop system. It takes a lot of configuration to get cores mapped and controls to work properly for all kinds of arcade, computer and console games.

I want a brand new console. I have no problem with it being a closed, controlled system.

I wonder what the next game play video will be?  I'm hoping for more footage of Dolphin Quest.  Or showing a new level of Night Stalker.

I’m hoping for Night Stalker been a while since an update to that one

Normally I would totally agree with you, but what if you bought into a Kickstarter thinking you were getting a console and instead you got a self proclaimed "Raspberry Pi for the Living Room". The app store is there but there is only a handful a games, a few services and you think the prospects for a major expansion of quality games is slim. In that case I totally see the logic in loading retropie on that thing - to limit your loss. I think a lot of focus will be on unlocking the bios and getting root so people can shape the machine into whatever they want unless the store makes a miraculous turnaround in the next few months. The VCS has some good (but generic) hardware so it's true potential may be in using for anything but an Atari machine.

they likely would have been better off just making this a unique shell for a pc mod. Your seeing more and more companies doing this. KFC, Budweiser, etc...  I think having your pc tower looking like a atari 2600 would be cool as hell. All they would of had to do is molded, tooled and fabricated a 2600 PC tower shell.  What was inside could of been any number of combos of hardware configs off the shelf as long they would fit.  They then wouldnt of had to worry about making content as it would just be a pc. IMHO, they sort of did that, but then went too far and now they are stuck in the middle of a no mans land.

Tommy, about Astrosmash gameplay :

Is the speed at which the spaceship moves from left to right final? My first impression is that I would make it move just a little faster. It covers less ground than I expected.

I was also wondering if the difference between the different vessels is only aesthetic? (Or they have different speed, weapons, etc ?)

The game looks amazing. Visuals, Sounds, Musics, Bosses, coop mode, everything look smooth !
It's one of the game I am looking forward with Night Stalker and Moon Patrol at launch !

Thank you.

It looks like the movement speed might be pressure sensitive.

Fun Video Tommy. Keep them coming!

After watching a few times, I showed the family. My son came away amazed at the way you can change the orientation of the controller. He asked me "Why hasn't anyone else thought of this?" My wife and daughter said Astrosmash looked like a lot of fun.  My Daughter likes specific games. But nowhere near hardcore. The last thing the wife got into was a few of the Wii games.

I did have a question: Is it me, or does the Graphite Black look a bit thinner than the Glacier White model?  It may be an optical illusion, but I asked the family and they said the same thing.  A newer revision perhaps?

I know we'll be buying at least 2 extra controllers when release happens. Hopefully we can mix and match colors. :)

Other observations were already brought up.. But I'm intrigued by the games Cats with Swords. I want to see that in action. A re imagined Centipede. Dolphin Quest. Flying Circus will hopefully be preceded by Monty Python's... :)

Of course Seeing Earthworm Jim (with no 4) was intriguing.  I know I'm reading too much into it.

Can't wait to see Darts either.

More fun on the way, no doubt.

Happy New Year one and all!

I wanna thank Tommy for the New Year's Day update video. Astrosmash looks great, and I really like how the background music changes with each level.

One thing that bugs me is on the title screen for Astrosmash we see the astronaut on the ladder ready to climb aboard the ship, with the radar screen in the ship animating and the space rocks coming down, but the astronaut is frozen. It reminds me of the faked freeze frame at the end of the Police Squad episodes:

https://youtu.be/A_3rJqHWYjs?t=99

Anyway, could the astronaut be waving at the player or something like that to break the frozen effect? Just a minor tweak hopefully. Otherwise, it's perfect.
