Intellivision Amico - Tommy Tallarico introduction + Q&A

Personally, I am remaining cautiously optimistic about the Amico. What we need here is to see it action. We need to see the games. They're not ready to be shown. That's fine. But we don't have anything of substance to discuss until they are. A new Earthworm Jim has been announced. That is a step in the right direction. But I don't need to see pictures of the console in various colors. I have paint. I can have any color I want. But I'm not going to be looking at the console when I'm playing a game. I'm not that keen on the console design, anyway. I suppose it's fine, but it reminds me of a baby humidifier.

babyhumidifier.gif.7ab28117353b8593c5e976bf3755951f.gif

The controllers are concerning. It's the only part of the console that in any way recalls the Intellivision. In fact, I could see this console being released without the Intellivision brand and just be a party game console that uses everyone's smartphones are controllers. That's not a horrible idea, getting people to do things with their existing devices they couldn't before. That's how Ralph Baer came up with the Odyssey. I don't know if it'll catch on, though. Some have expressed concern over the controller design in how kids will react to them, but I think they're like a smartphone with extra buttons on them. I don't think younger people will have trouble adapting.

I am not sure about the angle of this being a kids console, as in that all the games are rated E or whatever. I don't pay much attention to that stuff. I don't see that as being a particularly strong selling point because Nintendo already occupies that niche comfortably. It's not a wide open niche. The Switch may be considerably more expensive, but the NES Mini and the Flashback systems are under a hundred dollars. Now there's a PlayStation mini and upcoming Sega Genesis and Turbografx-16 minis. It's a crowded market. I don't find that all the games will be rated E to be a good selling point, anyway. Most people won't care. It's only going to appeal to people who have kids but are not interested in parenting them and expect the manufacturers of consumer electronics to do it for them. So that mormon housewife who had her kids' copy of Princess Bride edited so that all the swords were replaced with light sabres because that makes it "less violent" (this was a real service someone was offering a few years ago) will find this appealing. No one else cares.

The Amico takes a few cues from the Wii and I'm not sure that's a great idea. Sure is sold a lot of consoles, but who bought games for it? Some but most people seemed to play Wii Sports, the pack-in title, and maybe five additional party games and that's it. Know what kids are doing with their Wii's now? They're cutting up the motherboard to make portable GameCubes.

killmii_detail.thumb.gif.d40e21384f2f385e8ea018f5d698955f.gif

GameCubes because no one cares about Wii games. The casual game market may be large, but they are fickle and they don't buy much. Didn't help that most of the games on the Wii was horrible shovelware.

I've voiced most of my concerns. Most of these will just go away once we get to see the games. Because marketing for the console does not matter and is largely ineffective. The real marketing for a console is the games you can play on it. So, I'll be able to update my opinion once they're ready to be seen.

I just hope the "updated" Intellivision games aren't from that failed Intellivision Gen2 kickstarter. They looked like horrible Flash games from 2002.

I have different views on a lot of this first the look of the console actually looks a lot like the INTV 2 July more rounded which you are of course welcome to feel about how ever you want about.

The Controllers I think it’s premature to be concerned about them since we haven’t seen them in action so it’s hard to judge but knowing about all the tech in them and that’s where a lot of the market research was gone into and having played on the original Intellivision controller I see it as being a very logical evolution of the original that.

games lets keep in mind that this console is 16 months from releasing and you don’t want to have too much information out until you are ready

I definitely think your take on marketing is off I mean marketing is one of the most important aspects of this because we are talking about a company that hasn’t released a console since 1990 it’s not like they are Nintendo, Sony, or Microsoft who have been around a long time and most people have a preconceived notion about what they are about. Intellivision gets to reintroduce itself to the world and marketing will be a huge part of that process.

Most of the Wii consoles sold were to nongamers and they never bought another game because they weren’t focused on. Why buy games you won’t play?

I for for one am very excited for this system because my best gaming memories are playing Intellivision with dad either competing for high scores in Space Armada or racing each other in Horse Racing are memories I’ll hold on to forever  and the chance to have those experiences again which I feel like has been missing from consoles for the most part since PS1 outside of sports games is very exciting.

I think ultimately the success of this system will come down to two major things the games for which the first game play trailer is due in July and the marketing and considering the history of the marketing department for Intellivision and the budget they stated I have hope it will be a hit

Night Stalker looked pretty cool.  I liked both Astrosmash and Shark Shark but these NEW version looked pretty bad to me.  Shark Shark was just strange looking to me.

But non of that matters now...  Looking forward to a new system in a classic style!

Tommy, could you enlighten someone like me who's incredibly out of the loop on which games from the Intellivision Flashback that you still have the rights to and which might see a revived version?

I am extremely partial to B17 Bomber, Crown of Kings, Hard Hat, Shark Shark, Snafu and Thin Ice. 😎

Hard Hat; you really like Hard Hat?  All the others were named in their press release to be remade.  And that includes Advanced Dungeons & Dragons.

Thank you. That one flew over my head. Yes I do like hard hat. Some good competition in there if you are playing with a friend.

I pretty much disagree in theory with almost every one of the statements and assumptions you've made.

The only thing I agree with is that I wasn't a big fan of the Gen2 Kickstarter games either.  So at least we have that in common.  :)

It wouldn't be the best use of my time to sit here and type out everything once again that would counter-point each one of your concerns.... so instead I'll just say... go back and start from PAGE 1 of this thread.  Every one of your concerns have been addressed already in one way or another.

Although I do need to say that the most odd and absolutely ridiculous statement I think you made is to post a picture of that baby monitor and think that it in any way shape or form looks like Amico.  It's not the same shape or color... so a big "HUH!??!" to you on that.  If you would have said a "foot massager" or "take-out box" with an appropriate pic then maybe it would make a little more sense.  And if that is what you truly see and how you really feel... then once again I'll state... there is no reason to try and have a conversation with you at this point because your theories and opinions on things are so polar opposite of my own.  All that being said... if a mom sees a baby monitor when she see's Amico then we've totally won.  :)

Anyway... I look forward to you seeing the games and buying a system in 2020.

We own ALL of the games that appeared on the Intellivision Flashback.  That's why those were the ones chosen to put on the that machine (which was done a few years before I took over).

What I don't understand is why you guys are so focused on a child friendly angle that seems more extreme than Nintendo was back in the 90s.  I mean its one thing to leave out M rated games, but T rated games too?  That is so limiting.  This sounds like something Ned Flanders would approve of rather than something the general gamer would be into. Let's be real here, the Intellivision brand is only relevant to Men/Women in their 40's/50's. Go ask kids, teens or even a lot of people in their early 20's if they ever heard of a INTV and I bet they would just at you with shrugged shoulders.

The majority of people who are interested in this are the same people who frequent forums like this one, which in all honestly is very niche. What is the killer app that is going to get a new demographic interested in this device?  Earthworm Jim is a nice franchise and all, but that game never moved hardware, its not even close to the level of a Sonic, Mario, GTA, or Halo level IP in terms of brand power.

You might say, :"Well we will offer games at much more consumer level friendly prices".  Well that already exists via Steam sales or any mobile device which already has a huge install base.

No disrespect to the people behind this project, but it absolutelty makes zero sense to me.  You are trying to seek out this market that you think hasn't already been taken care of at this point. Kids play on their tablets and Nintendo devices and love them. Why do you think they will drop them in favor of the Amico that is not likely going to offer them something better than what they already have.

Going back to that Ned Flanders comment, I honestly believe the only true success you might have is with super religious families. That is about the only market I can think of that the big three aren't prioritizing.

They've made it fairly clear that this is a family friendly product that has been branded Intellivision rather than an Intellivision product that has been branded family friendly.

Their marketing does not appear to be capitalising on the Intellivision brand to sell product so built-in brand recognition is not key to their success. I expect they're leveraging the Intellivision name more to get the press's attention than the consumer's attention, and in that regard it's already working.

For the average consumer that they appear to be targeting (which is not merely our retrogaming niche) it sounds like their pitch will be the content rather than the brand. Even to the extent they are leveraging pre-existing game brands, it appears they're going out of their way not to be confused with a mere re-release of retro content.

As to the "Ned Flanders" audience you talk of, I think that's overstating it. Seems more like they're going for the Mario Kart/Mario Party crowd, which isn't as prominently served in the Switch era as it was in the Wii days. Regardless, certainly there's more to be gained in carving your own path than being the 4th "me too" in an already homogenised console world.

Anyway regardless of how right or wrong my speculation is, having a distinct identity is an absolute necessity if they want to be noticed in the mainstream vs. "the big three" as you call them, and Tommy is evidently working very hard toward that with a clear vision in mind of what that identity is.

As someone else pointed out, uber casuals are a fickle crowd and I just don't believe Tommy and his crew can convince them to buy a standalone console in 2020.  Remember when original Wii initially came out Tablets and modern Smartphones like iPhone didn't exist yet. This crowd is happy playing their casual games on their IOS and Android devices that a lot of the time happen to be free.

Remakes of games from the INTV era ain't gonna move units outside the hardcore INTV fanbase and neither will Earthworm Jim.

Lastly, I didn't mention this in my previous post, but Amico is going to launch around the same time as the next-gen consoles from Sony/Microsoft and you'll likely see a discounted Nintendo Switch Mini geared more towards kids. Majority of people live on modest incomes and want to make their kids happy and well I can't imagine kids being excited about opening an Amico on Christmas morning vs a Switch or PS5/Xbox4. "Hey kids, forget about Mario and Pokemon, what you really want to play is B-17 Bomber and MicroSurgeon!!!".

The so called video game snobs on the internet must really drive Tommy crazy at this point..I know it's driving me crazy...they can't look beyond anything that Microsoft, Nintendo or Sony puts out...they have zero vision and turn their noses up at anything that's even remotely outside the box...the Amico is probably not for them anyway

That is irrelevant.  I'm simply stating the obvious.

Mobile devices own the uber casual market.

Nintendo has the kids and older market who love strong IP like Mario and Pokemon.

Sony and Microsoft take care of the rest.

Nothing has been announced for Amico so far that is gonna get a large amount of gamers in any of the above markets interested.  As far as I'm concerned the only people who seem to really care are the same people who owned an original INTV back in the early 80s. Well that ain't gonna make the Amico successful if that is the only people who are buying it. Obviously more games will be announced, but so far I'm not impressed with what has been revealed so far.  Hopefully we get to see some actual gameplay soon. Its one thing to hype the product and call it "a revolution in gaming" but its another to actually deliver.

Somebody is investing many millions of dollars funding this product and they have more information than any of us.  We haven't seen one game yet.  Before launch we will see dozens, and only a fraction will be retro IP.  True, one of them needs to be the killer app.  They only need a small percentage of the casual/mobile market to be successfull.

If you read some of the earlier posts in the beginning of this thread, you will see Intellivision is not trying to compete with Ninendo or any of the other major systems.  They are plowing a path of their own.  Also, the fact that you equivalate a rated E system to "religious families" is completely laughable.  Video games were not always violent like the ones being made today.  I think it's a breath of fresh air to see a system that doesn't make only rated "M" games.  They get repetitive after a while.  This is exactly what the video game market needs, something that stands out from the rest.

For the record, their system isn't going to be running "killer apps", it's going to be playing GAMES! 😉

Video games are an example of a user application.  They have already decided that all games will be exclusive to Amico.  The more popular those games are, the more systems they will sell.  Maybe they don't need a killer app but anyone that makes a system/platform would like to have an app that a huge number of people want resulting in huge system sales.

Welcome to my hell.   :D

All anyone has to do is read from the beginning of this thread or watch any of the longer interviews I've done (again... a part of this thread) or read our posts on Facebook.  We have literally addressed all of these concerns and "opinions" on why people will think we will fail.  Including the TEEN rating (no, I don't want "strong language and blood" in any of our games.)

The funny and interesting thing is that all of the information is out there (and pretty much in this thread) but people don't want to do any work to find the answers to their questions.  They would rather ignore it and complain that we aren't getting our message out (we 16 months away from launch... our $11 million marketing campaign doesn't even start til 2020!)

It's easier to just complain, call us crazy and throw out a bunch of opinions with lack of understanding or knowledge then to actually just read and find out for yourself.

That's okay.  Everything is so early that I can understand the frustration from folks who don't know the info.  People who are negative right now just need to be willing to give the machine and games a try.  That's all anyone can ask for.  Telling people they are going to fail without ever seeing or playing a game is absolutely mind-boggling to me.  Giving me (and our absolutely illustrious marketing & PR team) zero respect in regards to what we're doing and who our market is and how we're going to get to them is a bit disrespectful at this point considering WHO we have on our team.

But again... I don't let it bother me.  We know we have an absolute 100% megahit on our hands and we can't wait to unleash it to the world.  Trying to explain to someone "why" (when I've already done it numerous times in this very thread) is a waste of my time at this point.  A lot more important things on my plate right now.   :) I love how some of the frequent viewers and posters here know the answers and can "fill in the blanks" for folks not willing to read from the beginning of this thread.  Appreciated!

I love how people on this forum say that a rating of 'E' is such a bad thing. It is basically the equivalent of saying that the Atari 2600, Intv, and CV suck.

Asteroids, Astrosmash, Combat, AD&D, Pitfall, Warlords, Pacman, River Raid, Shark Shark, etc. all stupid kiddy crap. Man the only like good classic game is well Custards Revenge on the 2600. You know because it wouldn't be 'E' for everyone. Best 2600 game ever.... all your classic favorites are trash lol. Now if a game like combat showed people flying out of the exploding tank with appendages and decapitated heads flying everywhere that would be more in the right direction. Lock n Chase would be good if to earn an extra life you hooked up with a prostitute while avoiding the police. Yep those old games just lack any charm or good gameplay. Not sure why they are called classic. Its like calling a dried up dog turd classic.

As far as making fun of the system design has no one looked at and Xbox or PS4? One is literally a black box (or white) and the other is a deformed black box.

Honestly, I like my classic systems because they are simpler, they don't rely on being 'edgy'/mature. While I started on a 2600 Jr, I mainly grew up with a NES. Of all the games I played on the NES that would be questionable ratings, Ninja Gaiden(s), Bionic Commando, Super C, Double Dragon, Battletoads, Castlevania, Batman. What would those even get rating wise today?

Oh and in case you can't tell that earlier stuff was sarcasm. The classic systems aren't crap.

Preach on brotha!

Yeah... it's pretty hilarious to me when people make fun of the look of our console... yet are perfectly okay with black rectangles that most average people can't even TURN ON because the ON button is hidden.  :)
