Intellivision Amico - Tommy Tallarico introduction + Q&A

Look what the "bat" dragged in! Night Stalker!! Intellivision Amico Founders Edition goes on pre-sale Monday afternoon!

Designed originally by Steve Montero and released in 1982 , the original Night Stalker game on Intellivision was one of the most popular and biggest selling games for the original system. So much so that it was ported to other consoles including the Atari 2600 (aka Dark Cavern) as well as the Apple II & IBM PC (1983).

Our Amico Retro Re-imagined version is being done by the incredibly talented and award winning developers at Other Ocean & Digital Eclipse while personally be programmed by retro legend and historian Mike Mika. Aside from single player, you can play with up to 4 players. Including Co-Op (as seen in this video) or Versus modes.

Although Amico's broader appeal will cater to families and casual gamers, we also have games to be enjoyed by more serious gamers who are looking to enjoy the challenges of couch co-op and in person versus modes at a little higher level. Night Stalker is such a game.

Please note: This is only a small unfinished sampling of what the game will ultimately be like. Many more surprises on the way! This was recorded and played directly from the Intellivision Amico system.

Hmm, in the last few seconds of the video, I noticed these icons on the bottom of the screen, which resemble Android's menu bar. Will that appear on the final version?

No.  That is part of our current OS which is a hybrid of Android & Linux.  You'll never see those in the final machine.

Really cool. The title reimagined screen is really ingenious!

I figured a lot of folks around here would recognize it.  :)

Night Stalker looks great!

The Evercade looks good too, but it only has 30 year old games... The Playdate is still my favorite portable console tobe released in 2020.

Speaking of witch, last week a Spanish video games portal decided to write an article about the last update from Panic (from December 19) and I wasn't expecting the massively negative reaction from Spanish (and some Latin American) hardcore gamers to it (1, 2 ) "You must be shareholders of this shit", "you can get an Xbox One S for that price", "they should pay us the $150 instead of charging us", "how could somebody waste their money manufacturing this"... I don't think I will buy it, but it looks really cool and I'm looking forward to see what developers do with it, especially the Katamari Damacy guy. I can't see myself using the crank in public, though.

I think we're lucky to have an open mind for new systems, even if they play retro style games. The way I see it, most hardcore gamers will miss a lot of fun experiences with their "hate first, think second" approach.

Tommy, I love the fact that you start the video with the original game and then move into the re-imagined game.  The voices and sound effects are incredible!  They are reminiscent of the original Night Stalker with a touch of Berzerk.  Well done sir! 😎

Love the Night Stalker video. Wizard of Wor fans as well should love this game.

The game reminds me of the Fuzion Frenzy games for Xbox and Xbox 360, which were meant to be played couch co-op. Very fun titles.

Ohmygee!!!  Just heard from Steve McQueen and he said,

Beware of the blob, it creeps
And leaps and glides and slides
Across the floor
Right through the door
And all around the wall
A splotch, a blotch
Be careful of the blob

How freakin' exciting is it to be an Intellivision fan right now?

The original Night Stalker was a very cool game but I wasn’t it’s biggest fan (no bad reasons, just didn’t get it). To the credit of this new entry, it’s making me want to revisit it.

I love the Robbie the Robot characters, absolutely love the art design (the moving walls, the animated players) and the music is absolutely awesome.  One of my favorite pinball machines of the last few years is Scott Danesi’s Total Nuclear Annihilation Pinball, which has very similar music that just gets you into the right type of mood.

I’m a big moon patrol fan and the glimpse of the new game looks good but I find this video sells the “Amico experience” even more.  It certainly shows this is not just an 8bit to modern facelift!

Well done Tommy and Amico team/devs!

I’d be kicked out of the B9 Robot Builders Club if I didn’t point out that Robby the Robot, from Forbidden Planet, is the Lost in Space robot’s unnamed brother. No sweat; it’s a common mistake.

Very cool that IE chose to use this robot so prominently in the game!

What mistake?  I’m thinking of my 2nd fav Leslie Nielsen movie, not the LiS tv show

edit: oh crap, I forgot he had legs though, you got me! LOL

Night Stalker Notes :

30 bullets per gun. (Appearing only when it's empty)

120 pts  for each robot

50 pts  for each bat. (Be sure its close to his shadow, which means it is low enough to be reached)

When you reach 1000 pts, you have another life.

Very cool how you reach a new level. That's this kind of little touch that I really appreciate.

Question. When we have 5 bullets or less, do we have a vibration, or something telling us we will be short in bullets soon !?  :)

Edit : You can reach a new level after a certain amount of robots are eliminate. Get to the eliminated floor ! :)

This gets me excited about the amico. Just the right amount of modern upgrade while keeping the original gameplay intact. Very impressive

Holy Forking Shirtballs, this was an amazing watch!

This is exactly what sells me on the Amico. Classic games I know and love but with updated graphics, music, multi-player and sounds; but still remaining true to the original gameplay.

These updates would also I expect make it a bit easier to coax the nieces and nephews into giving them a try.

*fun observation* At about 1:50 Yellow ducks out of the way and Cyan takes the hit from a robot shooting at Yellow. That there is gameplay right up one of my nephews alley; 'it is not of you win or lose, but if you can get someone else killed in the process' :D

The only real complaint I have after watching this video is I think my chances of my successfully getting in on the FE just dropped a few percentage points, as it really sells the Amico console and showcases the quality of games it will have available to it.

I am quite impressed, and am looking very much forward to the upcoming demo videos.

Those level transitions are beyond epic. Is this one of the 5 games you mentioned that are using Mike Mika's in-house game engine?

Yep!

Definitely liking some of the creepy vibes. I like the mad AI/killer robots and creepy spider (slenderman vibes a bit). Maybe in the final version that creepiness and craziness can be dialed up a bit. Love that they went with flat out Robbie because that's what the original grey ones looked a lot like.

Really great video showcasing what the Amico is all about. Well done.

One of my favourite puzzle games ever was Hexic HD - great relaxing game with an awesome soundtrack by Urbex. Plus it was free on the 360.

Fingers crossed a puzzle game of this caliber. The soundtrack can be found here - well worth a listen.

Tommy, any more news on the profiles on the Amico, achievements/trophies...?
