"Seems to be a contradiction in messaging." "This screams to me that he is banking on the uninformed to be the chief buyers of the console." Real journalists don't write this way. It is smarmy, extremely rude and sensationalistic. It's also taking things out of context and drawing speculative conclusions. Not journalism. Like others have said: Stick to the Amico, not making bad attempts at guessing people's intentions that you barely know.

There was a "find these items in the picture" poster on the wall so we found all of the items while we were waiting. At the very bottom of the poster, it said that is was created by Tony Tallarico. Just wondering if he's any relation to you.

I am so happy about the Amico console coming out this year. This is like a dream console for me. The Intellivision was the best console of the 70s and 80s in my opinion. I am probably biased, but I still enjoy playing it today. With all the amazing home-brews that have come out, and now a new console, this is a good time to be an Intellivision fan!

I would like to thank everyone for the warm welcome. That said, I would be remiss if I didn't address the accusation brought against me. I will try to be succinct but you will have to forgive me if indulge in a bit meandering. I will address things as they were mentioned by Tommy, so you can reference his quoted text if you are unsure what it is I am addressing specifically. Right off the bat Tommy start with a bit of sleight of hand, as he has indeed blocked me on Twitter, and presumably YouTube, but it was only AFTER my article was published. My article clearly shows I was able to comment, positively, on the Intellivision channel. As you can see from this Tweet, I was clearly not blocked prior to January 29, 2020 7:34 PM my time. This is a stark contrast to the idea Tommy implied with his comment, that he had me blocked for quite some time. Next up is the idea that I disparaged Dean Takahashi "every time" Tommy posted an article from Dean. Well, according to this search on Twitter, Tommy posted 5 articles/videos from or involving Dean. I commented on 2 of those, this and this were the comments I made. Were they cheap shots at Dean, probably, but 2/5 is hardly "every time." You may see this as pedantic or nitpicky, but it one of the issues I have with Tommy. His need to exaggerate and/or hyperbolize things.

Moving along, you can clearly see in the tweet I posted that I never claimed to be better than anyone nor was I "extremely" rude. Perhaps a tad bit rude, and not at all fawning over Tommy's celebrity, but I believe it is quite the stretch to say I was "extremely" rude in our exchange. I do admit my site, not a blog, is not a big deal but it is only about 6 months old. The fact that many developers and publishers have included us in their press release and review copy lists is no big accomplishment. One of the people who was very friendly to myself and my little "blog" was the PR firm hired to represent, the Amico. Ironic, I know.

Now, Tommy claims I messaged him on Twitter, 7 or 8 times. Assuming he means direct essage or DM then again he is exaggerating a bit. I messaged him 5 time between September 22, 2019 and January 29, 2020. Here is a nice image of those message, because Tommy also claimed I got "nasty." His claim of nuking me due to my behavior was already proven false, as previously shown he did not "nuke" or block me until after I messaged him on the 29th of January 2020. The claim that I would write false claims about Tommy, Intellivision, or the Amico are completely untrue. I wrote 1 article about Tommy suing Roblox over the "oof" sound. That article is here. If you click that link you will note the huge "update" label on the title and in the opening of the article. As Tommy pointed out, in the same Twitter thread I posted, he was not suing Roblox. My reply thanking Tommy for clarifying the lawsuit issue as well as me showing the YT comment reply he made to me that lead me to that conclusion can be seen here. Once again I already posted the Twitter thread and DMs so you can see I never "demanded" an interview or said he was  "... nothing until I do an interview with him... a "real" journalist." As i said, I made 1 article about Tommy, Amico, and/or Intellivision so I am hard pressed to see how Tommy can claim I am coming up with negative conspiracy theories.

Now, Tommy admits he began screening the YT channel, so why is it a problem I made an article highlighting this? My test comments, as shown in my article, were filthy, they were simply very negative. Now, Tommy goes on to claim I "would constantly use four letter words describing me and the console." I am going to need some evidence of this ridiculous claim. No, Tommy's word is not good enough for me. After all, what can be claimed without evidence can be dismissed without evidence. That said, no one that I am aware of is trying to stop Tommy from making a family friendly console. Least of which is me. Now, Tommy brought up the like/dislike ratio on his videos and says "...the funniest and most ridiculous thing about this guy is that he has ZERO answer about our LIKES to DISLIKES ratio." Well Tommy and everyone else reading, why would I mention something that has nothing to do with the article I am writing. I was not discussing the like/dislike ratio, the subscriber count, or the amount of views on his videos. The article was about comment curation, not deletion like the poster said to Tommy, and nothing else. The like/dislike ratio is really good but it is a tad low if you look at the fact there are, at the time of typing this, 11,498 views and only 688 likes on the Astrosmash video. So, just a hair under 6% of the people who watched the video took the 3 seconds to like it. At 273 approved comments, that is just 2.3% of all viewers commenting on the video. So yes, the ratio is very good. The engagement is another story. Now Tommy claims there are negative comments on the Intellivision, but all I see are positive videos with some criticism. Not a single negative comment. If you can show me a purely negative comment made before the day my article was published I'd really appreciate it.

As for the idea that I'm trying my luck on Reddit, I've posted there far longer and far more vigorously than I have on Youtube or Twitter combined. What I did was post my article on a sub Reddit that I felt would be most applicable to it's contents. Now let's get into the 5 concerns I expressed on Reddit that Tommy believes are "completely incorrect." It will follow the format of my comment quoted, Tommy reply quoted, and my rebuttal.

Here is an excerpt from Tommy's interview with Dean Takahashi, Tommy says and I quote "Our go-to-market strategy is to go after moms who have young kids. Most GameStops are in malls. Who’s shopping between 9 in the morning and 3 in the afternoon? It’s moms with young kids. Even GameStop tells us that moms will walk in at noon with their 4 year old and say, “Do you have anything for my 4 year old?” What are they gonna sell them?"

Now, does that sound like an informed mom who researched and knows of the Amico or a mom who is uninformed and is just looking for an age appropriate game? Now then, how did I insult moms? I practically quoted Tommy verbatim so by his own admission he thinks he insulted moms with his statement. Again, the comment wasn't aimed at moms but at a statement Tommy made in an interview with Dean Takahashi. Since it was a transcribed interview I couldn't have misheard or misunderstood Tommy's words, so unless Dean wrote an incorrect quote then those are indeed his words. As for the issue of my relationship and fatherhood status, I am a single father of a teenager. I mention my child in my Twitter bio so I am shocked Tommy did not know that. I'm also not in any bubble of any kind.

In typical Tommy Tallarico fashion, he ignores what I said and refutes an argument I did not make. Nowhere did I mention photo realistic graphics. I simply said there are mobile games that look better than the games shown off for the Amico thus far. I even admit that graphics are not the be all end all, but they get people into the door. Candy Crush and Angry Birds, 2 huge mobile games, are literally copies of other games, Candy Swipe and Crush the Castle respectively, with better graphics that helped them to achieve huge success. These games look very colorful, unlike the games they ripped off, and these pretty graphics were what caught the eyes of casual gamers. In essence, a pretty game has a better chance to get people to try it out then an ugly one.

The China comment came from the same Dean Takahashi interview I posted, but here is a link to the page it is on. Here is the quote in question for those not wanting to click the link...

"Tallarico: We’re launching in North America, Europe, and potentially the Middle East, all at the same time. That’s our plan right now. We’re also talking to Australia, that area. I was in China for a week. We met with the Chinese government, some big players over there, about potentially — over in China they’re very family-oriented. If you think we have problems over here with mobile screen time, over there it’s a whole other level. When we were talking to them about our solution, they flipped out. They loved it. So we’re talking to China as well because no one’s been able to break the Chinese market. I know Tencent and Nintendo are trying the Switch now. We’ll see how that works. But again, for us, those young families, there’s a whole bunch of them over there as well."

Now, it is nice to hear Tommy has a plan but to ignore China's history of IP abuse is very dangerous. You see, I literally asked how Tommy plans to stop China from stealing his tech and making bootleg Amicos. I also mentioned the reduced game time laws being passed. Not sure why asking a question about China was dismissed with little to no regard, but I can't make people talk. That said, I'm glad Tommy has a plan, but acting like China doesn't bootleg video game consoles is 100% out of touch with reality. For reference, Via Wikipedia, "A new law passed in November 2019 limits children under 18 to less than 90 minutes of playing video games on weekdays and three hours on weekends, with no video game playing allowed between 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. These are set by requiring game publishers to enforce these limits based on user logins."  Also, via Wikipedia here is the Chinese Vii console, a Wii knock off.

Again, Tommy ignores the point I bring up to refute something I did not say. Tommy has literally said in many interviews that parental controls on modern gaming systems are too hard to use and the Amico is so family friendly they don't need these parental controls. He then advertises the Amico having parental controls, the same time limiting ones found on other systems, and believes these are not contradictory statements. Now, please point to the part where I mocked our tried to tear down Tommy for wanting to have parental controls on the Amico. Pointing out a contradiction is not mocking or tearing someone down, it is pointing out a fact that Tommy says one thing in interviews and another thing is advertised on the Amico website. I do have some questions about the parental controls of the Amico, but they will be for later since I have a few more thing to address.

Despite what Tommy says here, he has in fact never stated, to my knowledge, why the Amico was dreamed up in lieu of making PSN/Xbox Live/eShop games. Tommy has said how Amico games will be "unique" and "unable to be recreated" on those systems but this is AFTER the decision to make a console was made not beforehand. Unless we are to believe the games and controls were created first and then he realized he had to make a brand new system to accommodate those games??? I honestly don't see why Amico games can not be digital downloads on other systems and the Amico controller sold as a peripheral. That was my point and that was never addressed.

Also, just to wrap this post up because it is going on too long as is, it is very funny you criticize me for misspelling a word and your last name wrong in a private DM but you, in a public Tweet, spelled the name wrong of the person who was interviewing you.

Her name is Vara Dark not Vera Dark. I'm sure it was an innocent mistake, one Vara laughed about it after the fact, just as my misspelling of your name was. You might not have realized, but I sent those messages from my phone while I was at work. Oily hands, fat fingers, and a little phone don't mix well. I will address the rest of Tommy's issues with me in my next post.

i really don't think we need this nonsense here especially from a guy who obviously has too much time on his hands and god knows what else

We may not "need" it but removing it would just make it worse imho. I'm glad he could express his side of the story; he doesn't make me agree with him but at least I have a better understanding of his point of view.

Haha!  Yes.  He's an older cousin.  He's been writing children's books since the 80's!

Sorry to hear about your son.  Hope he feels better soon.  If only Amico was out now!  There are actually a few games I could think of that he could easily play with just one arm.

I kinda felt his entire post was that.  Lots of wrong assumptions and taking my words out of context to fit his own narrative.

I thought he was coming here to ask me questions.

I hope we keep the focus on Amico, right guys?

Question: Have you let kids to test Amico? If so, what age they were and what they thought about the controller?

Yeah!  Extensive testing with kids of all ages.  This is why you see such a difference from our first reveal trailer (mock ups at the time) and the finished product.

10 times out of 10 they would always pick the Amico controller over Switch, PS4 & Xbox.  Especially the younger ones.  They all LOVE the screen and are immediately drawn to it.  Same goes for all the casual gamers and non-gamers.

Different results when you get into teens and hardcore in their 20's and 30's (PS win that battle).  But as we all know... that isn't our initial target audience anyway, so no worries.

He confirmed in one of his posts that Dean couldn't play Cuphead which I guess in his eyes makes him less of a journalist?

To me, it just continues to prove my point that games have become too difficult to understand and just pick up and play.

Where is the proof that Dean isn't a capable journalist.  Again... it is widely known in the industry that he is one of (if not the) best.  One of the reasons he was chosen by all the ex-Nintendo staffers to break our original story.

Doesn't someone need to be paid professionally to be a 'professional" journalist? (Its kinda in the name).  It's a personal pet peeve of mine when people just throw that term around so loosely and DECLARE they are in the video game industry.  No you're not.  You cover the industry from the outside.  You're not in it.

That post is super dramatic and really over the top... Focuses too much on the wrong issues.

I especially don't understand who would be concerned with Chinese bootlegs at this stage of development. Just what on earth is someone supposed to do to prevent Chinese "bootlegs" of their systems anyway?

Yes, if that was the case, how do Sony, Microsof & Nintendo survive?  The reality is that different places around the country supply different parts of thr machine, and them other places assemble it.  No one place has all the info or parts to knock off complicated stuff.  Only more simple things that are all made in the same plant.  Video game systems are NOT handled that way.

He could have just asked me the question, but instead just insisted and drew conclusions that he knew the answer and we were screwed.

Journalism?

Hardly.

Tommy ,

Can't remember if this has been asked... What were your thoughts on cartoony fighters... Clayfighter or maybe even a new Intellivision fighting game?

Also, Rampage/Giant Monster Destruction, and Racing games (maybe too 3D or too realistic)?

We have a few ideas.  I'm not a huge fan personally, but recognize and appreciate that the genre is popular.  We have a few ideas that incorporates the touch screen, but havent started working on anything yet.

To me, it just continues to prove my point that games have become too difficult to understand and just pick up and play.

100% agree. Over the years I've gravitated more and more from modern gaming to retro or retro style gaming because, one, most modern games are way too involved and take too much time and two, have become way too complicated. As an example I'm a huge hockey fan as my username and avatar suggests, and I shake my head at the sheer number of button combinations, thumb stick moves, and detailed combos needed to play the game the way it's meant to be played. I'd rather go back to the genesis hockey games that were simple pass and shoot.

As an aside, a nice simple hockey game on the Amico would be fantastic

Ice rage on the ouya was one I loved in the vein of Hat Trick. Something like this would be great on the Amico and is a blast to play

He confirmed in one of his posts that Dean couldn't play Cuphead which I guess in his eyes makes him less of a journalist?

Where is the proof that Dean isn't a capable journalist.  Again... it is widely known in the industry that he is one of (if not the) best.  One of the reasons he was chosen by all the ex-Nintendo staffers to break our original story.

Doesn't someone need to be paid professionally to be a 'professional" journalist? (Its kinda in the name).  It's a personal pet peeve of mine when people just throw that term around so loosely and DECLARE they are in the video game industry.  No you're not.  You cover the industry from the outside.  You're not in it.

As soon as I get off work, doing overtime, I will drop some questions. FYI I have been paid by several gaming and non gaming websites to write articles and reviews. Additionally, I have been paid to write dialogue for a few video games. So, yeah I think I'm qualified to say I am in the industry, specifically as a journalist. I do appreciate the fact you replied.

Absolutely!!!  LOVED Hat Trick in the arcades and we definitely have something similar plan6ned.  Never saw or played the Ice Rage game.  Looks super fun!  I'll have my guys reach out to the developers.  Hopefully they're still around.

We intend on having multiple types of sports games... from hyper casual to casual to a little more complex (but still nowhere near the modern next gen stuff).

You from Ontario?  My wife & mom were born in St. Catherines, ON.  My dad from Niagara Falls, NY.  Spent lots of time visiting family and friends in the area!

Cool.  I'd be interested in checking them out.  Can you send me links to the articles you were paid for?  Curious to see your style of writing when paid professionally as opposed to on your own.

Which games did you write dialogue for?  Would love to check the games out as well.

Thanks.  Looking forward to your questions.  Please use the search option in this thread as more than likely I've probably answered the question previously.

Windsor Ontario, right across from Detroit. Niagara Falls is great. Love some trips up there. Maybe we can have an Amico party up there someday 😁

Dude your website is a blogspot site, anyone can make one of those for free. No offense but you seem a little delusional. if you want to be taken seriously as a video game journalist at least have a website that has some money into it.

A lot of that proof would have been good to post in your original diatribe against Tommy.

But try to keep it more civil instead of assuming things and reading into intentions.

Ask questions instead of stating your own formulated answers.
