Intellivision Amico - Tommy Tallarico introduction + Q&A

Amazing, isn't it?

I've said before that we should do our best to remain positive and productive, so I don't want to give these losers any more attention than necessary.  But perhaps we can better understand what "positive" and "productive" mean, and can better appreciate the people who exemplify those qualities, by occasionally taking a moment to compare them to their opposites.

Here on AtariAge, we have a whole community of imaginative people who are always working hard to create constructive passion projects—not just Intellivision fans, but Atari fans and Coleco fans and fans of all the other classic entertainment platforms that have a following here, and modern platforms too.  Whether they're podcasts or homebrew games or hardware upgrades or high score contests, what these projects have in common is that they're all about bringing joy to other people who share the same passion.  Compare that to the way these losers have chosen to spend their time, and the kinds of people they choose to associate with.  How can anything constructive or creative or imaginative or positive ever come out of that miserable camp?  They join other like-minded people who couldn't cut it here on AtariAge for various reasons—most of them having nothing to do with the Amico—and I can tell you that they're all a pretty pathetic and vindictive lot.  I know who I'd rather spend my time with!

The oddest thing is that they actually think they are making intelligent arguments.  I refuse to comment on places I see the same 5 numb nuts, but friends will sometimes send me Facebook messages with screen grabs or videos when they say the most idiotic of things (we have a good laugh).  One obsessed ding dong recently declared how dumb we are to have an office in Germany when Germany isn't a big gaming market.  They are so deranged and eager to call us dumb that they couldn't even take 10 seconds to Google and realize that Germany is in fact the BIGGEST video game market in Europe (even surpassing the UK) and the 5th biggest country IN THE WORLD for video game revenue.

https://newzoo.com/insights/rankings/top-10-countries-by-game-revenues/

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_games_in_Germany

Having respectful disagreements and differences of opinions is one thing.  Being painfully stupid because you're so negatively obsessed with hoping we fail is literally a mentally unstable condition for these 5 folks.

My favorite line from that trailer:

"Lets get our whack on!"

Really?  No one in marketing flagged that?

:D

We do have camera support... but it's not from the console or controllers themselves... but in some games you hook up your mobile and do different things with it.

:)

What do you do for the camera if you're like me and don't have a smartphone? Will a webcam work instead?

No.  Only works with smartphones through the Amico controller app (which will be a part of the Amico Club app at some point).

I imagine the most difficult part of making educational games is to make them actually fun and engaging. Who the hell wants to "play" Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing (I know, it's not actually a game, it's just an example) when you can play Typing of the Dead on your glorious 32-bit Sega Dreamcast?

This is an interesting concept. Something like Super Metroid where you need to go around finding words to learn or whatever to use them as weapons or tools or something, whether through the microphone or some other input method would be interesting.

There is a game on Steam I have that is very similar to what you are describing. It is 'Koe', which is essentially a JRPG where you learn Japanese words and then use them in combat. I am probably failing spectacularly in explaining it well, but it does look like an interesting idea!

It is still in development, but it does seem a lot more fun then slogging though a normal language 'read, speak, repeat' learning program.

Question for Tommy:

- Will the European and American versions of the Amico have exactly the same power connectors? I mean, will both versions be physically the same except for the cable and some stickers, etc.? Will European VIP/FE buyers be able to find a regular power cable in their shops to replace the American one?

- All versions will have the same power connector on the back of the unit. Retail versions sold in each country (and online in each country) will have power supplies that plug in to their respective country's power outlets.

- VIP/FE purchasers will either receive an adapter for their country, or (working on the arrangements now... nothing confirmed yet) they will actually receive a power brick made and certified for their country. I think there is an even chance of the 2nd happening.

Tommy, it probably made it past marketing because they must have figured, it's better to "wack on, then wack off!" 🤣

Sounds like that could be a line from the Karate Kid movie... 😄

@Tommy Tallarico regarding motion controlled games, is disc golf on the list of games to be made for the Amico?  If so, any idea if it's a 2020 or 2021 release?  I play this with friends and it would be great to have a motion controlled video game to play on those rainy days where we can't get out on the course.  Thanks for all you are doing to bring back the Intellivision into modern gaming!

I'm curious, will the store note which games require a smartphone? My kids don't have phones yet so it would be good to know which ones will require them to use my wife's or mine.

I’ve said this to him before. It’s not in the immediate future but it sure would make great use of motion controls. Disc golf is the fastest growing sport and I’m sure it will reach the Amico eventually. I play the mobile app Disc Golf Valley quite a bit and if Tommy would play a few minutes of this, he would be hooked and on board for disc golf to come to the Amico sooner than later!

Interesting... I might have to try it after it releases. It looks to be absolute beginner's level Japanese since they aren't even using the kanji for 戦う and 逃げる and what have you in the screenshots of the battle menu, but I might try it to see how it is.

Not trying to show off or anything, but there is a chance that I'll be like "I know all of this... boring..." and drop it, though.

Thanks for the recommendation Craig!  I've heard about Disc Golf Valley, but haven't tried it yet.  I guess it's time I do!

Maybe it was a typing error and they should have said evolution instead of revolution... 😉

I've heard a few different rumors.

1.  Microsoft or Sony has purchased them.

2.  They are announcing a mini version of either the Saturn and/or Dreamcast.

3.  They are coming out with a new family friendly console that focuses on couch co-op and has simple touch screen controllers.

Okay... so I made the last one up.  But ya never know.  Maybe they've been watching!

:D

One things for sure... if it was the 3rd one... watch how all the fanboys and haters will all of the sudden think it's the greatest idea in the world.

Hahhaha!

😋

He said it was going to "rile up" the games industry.

Which is a really strange phrase to use as "rile up" typically means to anger.  But it probably got lost in translation as his comments were apparently in Japanese.

definition:  To cause someone or some group to become particularly excited and animated, especially in an angry or irritated manner.

But HERE is the translated quote:

My column in next week’s issue of Famitsu is crazy. I got a huge scoop… It’s a world premiere article. And an exclusive. It may not be Nikkei or Weekly Bunshun, but if you want to know if it’s a scoop that big…it totally is! It’s a scoop from a game company that everyone loves. An insane scoop. Last year, Wired got the exclusive story on PlayStation 5, right? Other media didn’t. It’s that level of a scoop. I interviewed a certain company’s executive and technical staff, it’s really revolutionary… really, it’s a revolution.

It’ll be in Famitsu next Thursday. I already sent in my manuscript, so the proofs are being made now. It’s a scoop on a level that when the story comes out, other media will make a fuss to the company like, “Why didn’t you let us cover it?” Maybe people will say, “Who was the first to break that story?,” “It was Zenji Nishikawa, right?” It’s a scoop as major as the PlayStation 5 scoop. I just wanted to say that in advance.

I can’t say [anything more] here, but it’s OK for me to tease it (laughs). I was told that it’s OK to do so at various meetings. It’s being talked about in other places. Just not by the media. It’ll rile up the games industry."

My understanding is that he didn't even really say anything about Sega but a ton of folks were hoping it was going to be the announcement of a Dreamcast 2.

From an article:  "Once he had though he made it plain that whatever his big secret is, it isn’t the Dreamcast 2."

If it was a new console... didn't they know they should of followed up with...

"Wouldn't That Be Something?"

Honestly, I think it may be some kind of collaboration between Sega & Microsoft for the Xbox X.  This was already rumored back in April and I highly doubt that Sega would make a hardware announcement through a magazine.  Famitsu is HUGE!!  But they would do a video trailer... not a magazine.

https://gamerant.com/microsoft-sega-big-announcement/

But even that supposed "leaked image" could be a fake.

So who knows!

I just learned that apparently Windjammers 2 is in development for Switch and PC. Any chance of Amico being added to that list?

Love Windjammers. Have the AES version. Bought the Limited Run Games Switch version. All around fun. Would love to see a lot of the NEO GEO games on the Amico. As much as I love Metal Slug, I don't think that it would cut the mustard on the Amico. But other games would fit nicely.
