Don't worry... lets just say...  I got ya covered.

:)

The thing I’m really looking forward to the most besides actually playing the games is  the box art. If it has the same look and feel of the original I’m going to be very pumped up about it!  Hey Tommy, any idea as to when we will get a glimpse of it?  Seems like I remember you saying sometime in July but I can’t remember.

I also like the original Intellivision games box art a lot. Especially the once before '83 that where categorized in the "Network" system. With the main picture and the circle(s) showing different perspectives.

Do at least some of the original paintings from the artist still exist? Would like to see an original painting (what size it was drawn originally, what painting technique was used).

I have one CONCERN about the Amico!

As I understand it by now:

New games are usually downloaded to the system from an online store. Like it is the case for example with the iPhone and the App Store (as an App developer for iOS devices I know the App Store best).

I am no collector per se; especially not of figures and merchandising stuff but I like to use and enjoy some devices after their supported live span is over. This is for example no problem with my Mattel Intellivision. I can today buy games for it I could never afford back in the days and play them.

On the other hand for my first iPod touch I can not install any new or old Apps because the current versions do not support the old device any more and the old versions that would run on it are not available any more. Even as a developer I can not create new Apps for this "old" device because that is not supported.

So now back to the Amico, my "concern", and the announced physical games:

From what I heard so far this physical games will only be some kind of trigger so that the Amico will download the actual game from the online store. This would mean, that even the physical games depend on the server infrastructure.

Of course this is the way most of the things are handled nowadays. What makes me a little bit sad is the fact, that with this dependency on the internet this great Amico console will also become more or less a "brick" as it is the case with my old iPod touch (and the PlayCable of the old Intellivision) when the online service is shut down.

Tommy, please resolve my concern and convince me that Amico is forever. ;-)

Don't worry... we got ya covered!

It's more of a numbers game.  Meaning... if we have 30 titles on launch we just don't have the immediate capacity or will be given the shelf space to do them all.  Too risky a proposition for a company just hitting the retail market.  Best to take the "victories" and the ones we feel will make for a very nice special package.  Gotta pick our battles and spend manufacturing money as smart as possible.  Best to walk before we run and see what the market prefers.

If everything goes as planned.. we can always revisit titles that were only offered digitally.  Better for us out of the gate to read the market as opposed to guessing.  We may find that only a certain demographic will want a physical version.  We won't exact know how that will play out until we're on the market.  Hard to distinguish these types of buying decisions through focus group testing.

I for one hope that you don't partner with someone like Limited Run games. You have your own web presence. In this day and age of limited this, and exclusive that, and secret loot box this, I'd prefer that your boxed games be available from your site. Whether a preorder or reserve system, not someplace that I forget to check at a certain time or date or my junk mail filtered the announcement and then I miss out.

PS, I'm not referring to consoles, unlike some collectors I don't need every different color, however I do not want to miss an boxed game release and why should the scalpers and flippers be rewarded over supporters.

Correct.

No reason to partner with folks in regards to physical media.

I'm slow on the uptake, but I finally figured the "Wouldn't that be something?™" thing out. Did Disney allow you to trademark it?😈

I've been re-watching some older blu rays and Prince of Persia had the Tron Legacy trailer in it. Brucie Boxleitner said it.

I think it would be better if we avoided discussing COVID-19.  Discussing how it is impacting this project is one thing, but if the other COVID-19 threads we've had here are any indication, too many of us are not yet in a place where we can rationally discuss the subject directly, and I don't want it to derail this thread any further.

cool. i'll comply with what you said, not because it's your job to monitor comments, but because you're one of the few people here whose opinion i actually respect.

Yesterday I saw the "new familly" from my girlfriend's sister.

A new boyfriend (38 years old ) and 3 girls, 17 years old, 15 years old and 12 years old.

They are really good people. They have no video games at home !

I am so looking forward to show them Amico this autumn and let them play ! They will love playing together.

Everytime I seeing people, I am asking myself if they will love the new system, and to date, the answer is always yes.

I am not worried they wouldn't buy Amico because of shortage, because I have already pre-order a lot of them for familly and friends ...
But I am worried that maybe I will not have the colors of their choice !  😅  lol

True, AD for consoles might not work out.  However, Sony is making a AD edition of the PS5 and it looks like MS is going to give another crack at an AD edition too.  Grant, AD editions may not stick, but PC gaming has pretty much gone AD (if I am not mistaken) and consoles look like they are trying to go toward that direction as well.  Moreover, isn't the Amico going to be digital to some degree as well?  Me, personally, while I do love physical media, it is sadly looking more and more like the ways of the past concerning things such as gaming, TV shows, and/or movies.

Well said.  The Amico may actually be early on the revolution of going all digital with the inclusion of collectible/scannable media.  I'm down with this!

That’s what I plan on doing. The other reason why I wish there was a physical box copy of every game is because there MIGHT be a perception that if there isn’t a physical box copy of the game, then the game must not be that great. It may divide the game catalog into two classes of games:  awesome and not-so-awesome.

This is a great point. I have a ton of digital games on my Xbox One, Sony, and Nintendo and it can be hard to keep them straight. It can also be easy to get lost in a sea of blue and green game cases on your shelf on the wall. There are two things that can help the Amico on this:

1. Slow release of quality-controlled games. I love this since my awesome Switch becomes a ADHD nightmare when I systematically check the eShop for 'one minute' before loading a game and it turns into Netflix. We can honestly say the majority of the 3,000+ games may not be top quality. Nintendo just opened the door and will probably almost let anything in for $. Proper organization could fix this, but I'm not holding my breath form Nintendo to work on that as I don't think they're concerned by seeing how the Switch home screen still has no organization (C'mon - Sony has folders! haha).

2. Layout and organization/filtering of the system homescreen/dashboard. Steam has this down pretty well and they make the sea for games in your library look pretty, organized, and show time spent, achievements, etc. The will also be easy for Amico with the limited game quantity. I am excited to see how the Amico will show the leaderboards. I remember when I first got an Xbox360 I had a number of AAA titles and played with my friends online a lot. We eventually veered over into the arcade (whatever it was called), and played a bunch of retro games and small party games and we competed with achievements - that was a blast.

Maybe they are waiting to see who blinks first and then adjust their own price accordingly.

yeah its quite interesting. I like the Sony move to have an all digital version of the unit, this gives them a lot of pricing flexibility in that their margins for the games are much much higher in the digital only realm, (plus people cant resell the games which is revenue totally missed by devs and consoles)  So I expected Sony to possibly announce the regular disc based system and then wait out Micro and once Micro announces, they can match or lowball em with their digital only version.   At least we know there isnt any collusion in the industry currently or pricing would of been revealed by now and magically they would all be aligned.  Interesting days...... I prefer normal ones though

Its actually pretty funny to me. Some are actually afraid of me because I exposed their lies and their stance on a few topics that are extremely unfavorable in society and has ultimately gotten 1 of them booted from several YouTube videos.  Truth always overcomes the lies.

And bless you for that as we don't need that negativity. Video games and awesome/healthy forums like this are a positive outlet that needs no poisoning. My first thought is when people say they're unsure about this product my first thought is telling them 'don't get it and move along'. If $250 for a video game system is such a gamble maybe don't get a system and download some mobile games.

Regarding those who are not liking the direction of Amico and what Tommy is doing, then learning it is what it is and Amico will do it their way, and then still voicing negative opinions to hopefully re-route the project:

I forgot to mention this earlier that I totally get that concern and I would personally recommend getting a couple of Micro SD cards and archiving the downloaded games if you are concerned (if Amico allows). I recently realized that the Army of Darkness Defense game for my phone is no longer downloadable and that breaks my little heart.

@Tommy Tallarico would this be doable? I don't know your DRM situation.

Basically it is a streaming service where you can play multiplayer on a big screen but you need to provide specific android TV devices or have a PC hooked to your TV. Unfortunately no controllers, they are purely simulated on cell phones. That is a nice option on the Amico for some party games & such but if that was the *only* way to control Amico games then I would be out. Touchscreens work great in some games but without some physical controls you are really limited. That is why at least 2 more controllers are on my Amico shopping list. Some of the games look OK, some are like the "programmed over a weekend" mobile freeware and even are made with public domain art. It is $5 a month for the service which includes access to 140 games. They started in 2015 and claim 5 million users - but from the downloads of their Android app, I might tap some *serious* brakes on that number (plus their IOS app downloads are 1/900th their Android download numbers). That number includes the people paying the free trial and suffering from ads & 3 minute time outs every 30 minutes (*ouch*).
