Intellivision Amico - Tommy Tallarico introduction + Q&A

@Urlu Berlu Coincidentally, I think you need less hours of sleep if you go to bet before 00h. I am sleeping too many hours since I started going to bed at 2AM some weeks ago. While only some people can sleep 4 hours (that's genetical, so don't try this at home), sleeping 6 ours is actually better than sleeping 9.

So yeah, I also need to Tallaricise myself in this regard.

Yeah, I was joking about this. There's absolutely now way I can be a functional being while sleeping 4 hours every night!

everyone is different. There is no right amount IMHO. Finding what works for you and allows to function healthy is the key.  SOOO many people however do not get enough sleep, I find some people actually feel guilty if they sleep too long ( thats crazy).. As a creative person, ( I always have some project going) keeping a notebook by the bed is a must because the subconscious can really come up with great ideas or problem solve a solution for you.

Me neither, I'd be a zombie.  Lol.

me too, I'd have no home, no wife, no friends, no job... I'd be such a miserable SOB.  Some people are blessed to be able to sleep that little, I on the other hand need 10 hours a night, then again Im a lucid dreamer and never have a nightmare, so sleeping is pretty cool and I actually look forward to it each night.

Just don’t try that 1hr of sleep every six hours method Kramer tried on Seinfeld and woke up in a body bag in the East River. 😂

I fully understand that, and they may well be seeing the same thing Im seeing, but it doesnt hurt to leave feedback. I've been in the software game for 20+ years, feedback is a great help because sometimes you get and are so close to a project you can begin to miss the obvious .  Sort of like going nose blind.

I agree i have in projects i worked on til i asked for feedback

yeah its funny there are always a few observations and feedbacks which make the team all look at each other and say " how the $#@% we miss that"?  Not saying my observations are that, just saying a few peoples feedback may well lead to that moment.   Recently on one of our govt project we had a load button and it really was misleading to where you were loading to, and it kinda lead to govt agents loading data into their court documents they really didnt want there... DOH!..

Thanks so much for joining the discussion and giving your thoughts.  I noticed this was your first post.  Hopefully not your last.

It's great that you understand our strategy and why we do what we do.

Appreciate you taking the time to interact.

Very interesting comment about your kids NOT liking pixelated "old" games.  May I ask how old they are and if they are boys or girls?

In our research we find that your situation is more of the norm as well.  Although there are definitely a good percentage of exceptions (probably due to hardcore retro gaming parents), but when put side by side... they mostly pick our cartoon style over pixels any day of the week.  Something that supposed "experts" can't seem to wrap their brains around.  They have fond memories of pixel art so they don't see it as blurry and blocky... they see it as "charming".  So I understand why they think the way they do.  It's the egotistical insistence that whatever THEY like that the rest of the world MUST like it, that is the ridiculous part.  A few of the hardcores out there continue to scoff at us and insisting that we are idiots because we are changing pixel graphic games to (what they refer to as) "flash" games.  Hmmm... I don't ever remember seeing real-time 3D lighting on "flash" games.  Anyone out there care to give me an example of a "flash" game that looks like Astrosmash?  I'll wait.   :)

Here's a small example of pixel vs. cartoon.

You can see the character as they appeared in the original Fox n Forests game (left) and how they appear in our new and exclusive game (based in the world and around Fox 'n Forests) called Finnigan Fox.

Some may disagree... but I prefer the one on the right.  And so do non-gamers/casuals/kids, etc.

I think a lot of it depends on how well the characters are animated. Haven't seen any gameplay footage for Finnegan Fox, but if there were a low number of character frames, then I might see where the poo-poo-ers are coming from.

Speaking of which, I've always been impressed by the visual work Arcade Distillery has put into their own games. In particular, Luc Bernard is quite underrated as an artist! They could make a very nice Amico game, I think.

We showed a quick sneak peak of gameplay during the Amico Special Event.  Not much, but you could see his jump and shoot animation, bees around the hive, seasons change, etc.

this is 9 minutes that every animator and character creation/game dev should watch.  Chuck Jones was a genius in this arena.

Those old Saturday morning Warner Bros/Chuck Jones cartoons were the greatest.  Every time I come across one it still makes me crack up.

Duck Season!  Wabbit Season!

Yeah. Surprisingly timeless. My nephew, who is 25 years younger than me can recite them as well as I can.

I highly recommend Chuck Jones's memoir, Chuck Amuck, if you want to read a lot of great stories about how they made those cartoons!

Chuck Jones lived near us in Orange County!  I met him a bunch of times in the mid 90's at the WB store at South Coast Plaza.  He would do animation cell and book signings.  Got him to sign a bunch of stuff.

Super cool dude!

Syd Mead (Tron, Aliens, etc.) lived down the street from me as well until he passed away.  Got him to sign my Tron poster and his epic art book.

Of course Wyland is another big Orange County resident (I've been to his house in Laguna a bunch of times and have lots of his stuff as well).

Lots of amazing artists in Orange County!

So great right!?!?!

And that's the incredible thing... some of these are 70+ years old and the art style STILL stands up and most ALL people of ALL ages love it.  Pixel art.... not so much.  Only those who grew up in the late 80's/early 90's who have fond memories of that pixel style are prone to adore it.  I understand and appreciate that... but anyone declaring that pixel art is more popular than cartoon art and saying we are going to "fail" because we chose cartoon (sorry... FLASH) art over pixel art... is just plain ignorant and can't see outside their own bubble.

:)

I met Wyland at an art gallery opening years ago. I wasn't invited, but snuck in. The place was filled with a bunch of rich, pretentious people, and I was about to leave when I bumped into a really cool, down to earth guy who was avoiding everyone else. Turned out, he was Wyland. He didn't want to be there but had to make an "appearance" since it was his gallery. We talked for about ten minutes and he couldn't have been nicer. I always loved his work, and it was great to know the artist was just as great.

Yeah for sure.  I'm what's called a Super Sleeper (https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/sleep-newzzz/201104/could-you-be-super-sleeper)

I hit REM immediately which is why it's possible.  Most people need an hour or two to hit that "deep sleep" state.

The downside is that I don't really dream, but my entire real life is like a dream anyway... so I don't mind.

:)
