Intellivision Amico - Tommy Tallarico introduction + Q&A

Nintendo skews *heavily* toward cute and anime tropes, especially in its eShop.

There won't be any in the case of Amico, but there's a difference between what Nintendo allows to be released on its eshop, and "what Nintendo puts out" though. And "giggling Japanese school girls and anime power surge grunts with flashing backgrounds" is a very inaccurate description of "what Nintendo puts out"; it's a shame because it detracts from the real point of the message.

When you are trying to describe what the competition does wrong for casual/non gamers, and Nintendo is the competition, it's perfectly fine to write things that may sound offensive for some Nintendo fans... I see nothing wrong there. What worries me is how every single negative comment about Nintendo is followed almost instantly by someone defending the company, even in the most remote corners of the Internet... Hell, you could even make a sci-fi movie inspired by this, it's starting to become scary. 🎬

Upon further review, you are absolutely correct. It is perfectly fine to write things that may sound offensive to {Nintendo} fans. It's also very worrisome that any mildly negative comment or even ironic observation about {Nintendo} is followed instantly by someone defending them like they are controlling a narrative to insure maximum positive marketing potential no matter how legitimate the comment or observation might be.

"Grandma isn't interested in Yoshi's Wooly Sock Drawer. Uncle Phil doesn't know what a Kirby or a Pokemon is suppose to be and why games are sooooo cutesy. Mom and Dad playing a Nintendo game put up with lots of giggling Japanese school girls and anime power surge grunts with flashing backgrounds because that's what Nintendo puts out."

Can you explain who "he" is in your question?  Are you referring to me?

No, I'm talking about Retro Advisory Board's comment. Once again, Switch is far from perfect, and I agree with the global meaning of his comment; it indeed doesn't cater to casual audience as much as the Wii and the DS. But the statement I quoted is at best very caricatural, and I think it weakens his point. How can one convince people by making fun or attacking their taste?

If the Switch is not a real competitor to Amico, there's no point of bashing it and it's possible to point out its flaws without being offensive or being dishonest. After all, people can buy an Amico as well as a Switch or any other console. That's probably what I'll do!

Hi Tommy, hope you okay. I'm trying to spread the good word over on another forum. Had a negative reply and was wondering how to approach this...

All this Amico vs Nintendo vs the other two talk is silly. Just buy every console and be happy. Haha.

Now that I think about it... I have bought (and sold) literally every mainstream console and hendheld since the Master System... I need help... or at least focus - my backlog is bigger than a hot dog eating champion's!

I really don't want to hear anymore about them, but this could easily be said about Pat and Ian's criticisms of the Amico. There is always a follow up as to why they are wrong etc. whether its Tommy's replies or this thread.

This comment is ironic because the Amico fans are doing the exact same thing. So if people defending Nintendo is scary following up every criticism with a pro Nintendo, then the same thing could be said about this thread.

Same coin different side.

Like I said, I don't want to hear anymore about Pat and Ian. The consumers will ultimately decide if it is a success or not, not YouTubers or Tommy.

So to wrap up, when might we expect the next Moon Patrol installment this month? (It is a Q and A thread right? ) :D

Same coin different side???  I disagree and believe you're incorrect as there is a huge difference.

The difference is that those guys have (and continue) to lie on purpose and are now going out of their way to try and get people to dislike me and the system.  They delete comments on their channel that makes points against their negative and untrue statements, all in hopes that their channel numbers will rise like they did when they attacked the Chameleon (their words... not mine).  They are not at all interested in giving constructive criticism for Amico.  I reached out in my video response to have them come by so they could.... instead... they just made fun of me for doing so.  They are trashing me and the machine on purpose because they love the drama and feel it will garnish them more money.  They do not want to have a open discussion or debate or find out more information about it...  their only interest is to continue lying about me, deleting posts and hoping for the failure of the system so they can talk about it and make a few hundred more dollars.

That is a BIG difference from people pointing out the fact that Nintendo sells the most abusive, violent and unfamily friendly vile content among home consoles in the industry or that their e-shop isn't intuitive.  No one is purposely LYING about Nintendo in hopes that they go out of business.

Not sure when the next Moon Patrol level will be available.  Finalizing the hardware is our biggest focus and goal right now, but we're hoping by the end of January or beginning of February.

Here is an idea that I think is interesting. Back in the 80s there was a series of books called Fighting Fantasy. They were kind of like choose your own adventure books, but you played them with dice and there were several options to go through the game. In the last year or so they started to make these for video game consoles. For the Switch there are The Warlock of Firetop Mountain and Deathtrap Dungeon Trilogy. Although I like them both, The Warlock of Firetop Mountain is the slightly better one. I recommend both of them for some fun gaming.

These titles bring the fun of Dungeons and Dragons without the need for a Dungeon Master. The console takes the role of the Dungeon Master. I would love to see a game like this where multiple people can play. The different players could choose to venture off on their own to collect extra treasures or battle other creatures before meeting up again. This could be achieved with the screen on the controllers. The dungeon master could then state what is happening with both parties and could also state when they have split up or rejoined. Battles could be swayed by how many people are fighting them and adversely single players have a higher chance to sneak past various dangers. That would be a day one purchase for me.

I loved those - I was a big fan of the Car Wars series, by Steve Jackson. So much fun as a kid. The fantasy ones were cool, too.

And I agree - your idea sounds epic.

EDIT: It seems they are printing the Fighting Fantasy books again: https://www.bookdepository.com/Fighting-Fantasy-Citadel-Chaos-Steve-Jackson/9781407181257?ref=grid-view&qid=1578176450876&sr=1-1

No Car Wars though :(

He didn’t.  If that’s trolling, the internet is a house of untold horrors.  A bit of observational humor, nothing more.

Nintendo skews *heavily* toward cute and anime tropes, especially in its eShop.  These have very limited appeal to any audience in their 30s and older is the point.  18 or 19 of 20 adults in western audiences over age 30 just aren’t consuming J-Pop/K-Pop or anime content.  It isn’t created for them.  Works for Japan and South Korea where cuteness is embraced.  Works for kids who love the flash and moody teenage themes.  Works for younger adults who grew up with these influences.

But the rest of us??  I think it’s fair to say Nintendo’s “family appeal” leans on a large percentage of either genre, and many adults with no connection to Nintendo IPs get left out.

I totally agree with this.

The only slight change I would make is to bump the age to 40's and older as my wife is 34 and she grew up on Pokemon, Sailor Moon, etc. and still loves it.  :)

What Nintendo does, sells and accomplishes is pretty awesome.  As I typically always say in interviews... I believe that Nintendo knows and respects their core audience better than ANY current game company.

The only reason they continue to come up in discussion with folks is when people trash Amico and say that Nintendo already does what we're trying to do.

No they don't.

That isn't to disparage Nintendo... it's just responding (and hopefully educating) folks about the differences of the machines.

Playchemy

Hi All - this is my first post - so hello!

We have all heard rumors of a new Ecco the dolphin game for the Amico. But does anyone know about the The Big Blue?

Post image

The preamble states: A million years in the future, mankind is long gone and the earth has become sentient, alive. In this game, you play the role of a dolphin, orca, whale, or other sea creatures. Working with other intelligent beings of the deep you must help the Earth survive a global cataclysm.

The game was kickstarted, but failed to reach its goal - Tommy are you able to give details if you picked this up?

Post image

Above, from the Ecco the Dolphin Fan Club

Yo Amico Tony!!  (LOVE the name!)   :)

Welcome to the AtariAge Forum and this thread!!

Please feel free to ask me any questions about what we're doing and I'll try to answer them the best I can.

I can't give details right now (unfortunately).  I could if I would... but I can't.

But I will say this.  Ed & Playchemy has been confirmed as developers for Amico and we did show a multiplayer couch co-op pod of dolphins game with a dolphin flipping out of the water.

Hmmm.......

:D

Thanks again for joining the conversation!  Hope to see ya around these parts often.  Some cool discussions always going on.

I think an argument could be made that Nintendo does in fact "put it out".  They sell it for their console and most of those games can't be played on any other consoles.  They may not "publish" or "fund" the games... but by selling them in their storefront they are putting them out (i.e. distributing them).

Also... I'm sure there is going to be a LOT of young kid type stuff that average folks may HATE on Amico as well.  We have some very early learning games and stuff for seniors as well that a lot of folks here will be turned off from.

So I think it's perfectly okay for folks to dislike certain things on every system.  It's like loving a radio station... but you're not going to love EVERY song thats played... but it's the station you prefer because it has the most things you are most interested in.

I would even go a step further and say that I actually don't even think that any of the stuff said in this thread is offensive about Nintendo or its fans.

I think the difference with our discussions here about Amico is that some folks may voice concerns and other folks defend positions or give more info.

Haters and folks with big internet egos can't stand open back and forth discussion.  They feel the need to always fight, point out negatives and will defend to the death.  Why?  Because typically their arguments don't stand up.  Everyone in here is always saying it "could" be this or we "hope" it's that.  Everyone is hoping Amico does well and they see what we are trying to do.  No one is blindly bought in and would be their life that it's going to be a success.

I'm willing to approach, comment, discuss and go on any podcast, YouTube channel who hates Amico.  I'm willing to discuss and debate the merits of what we're doing and why.  And I am fully aware that people will absolutely HATE what we're doing and the games we're making.  That's fine.  I'm okay with that.  Our video Likes to Dislikes ratios are outstanding.  The positive comments on most videos on the internet about Amico are overwhelmingly positive.  And we haven't even started marketing or spent a single dollar to get our target audience yet.  Things are looking super positive for us!  :)

It's maybe too soon but just in case Amico becomes popular.

Is it possible for unauthorized publishers to sell their games for the system?

It was happened in the past.

Also somebody might try to mod Amico as well.

Ah!  Gotcha.  I guess my next question would be... so what?  Who cares if someone doesn't like a video game system as much as someone else?  Who cares if someone doesn't feel that a video game system doesn't cater to them?  Who cares if someone makes fun of a video game console?

I would say that the Switch is a competitor to Amico in that some folks feel that there is no need for Amico to exist because (in their opinion) Nintendo already does what we are trying to do.  Having a discussion and trading information about that shouldn't be seen as negative.  It's going to be our job to ensure that the world knows the stark differences of what we're doing and why and how.  If we don't... then we may fail.  But knowing what I know (and the way we're doing it)... we won't fail.  :)

Hi Tommy, hope you okay. I'm trying to spread the good word over on another forum. Had a negative reply and was wondering how to approach this...

Oh... that dude!  He's a funny one!  Folks have shown me some of his posts before.  He is a super negative dude who claims to know so much about everything we're doing... yet gets so much wrong.  :)

Please feel free to invite him to this thread to ask me questions directly.  I'm sure someone who feels they know all the answers to everything wouldn't mind having a friendly discussion about something he follows and spends a lot of time typing about anonymously on reddit.  Invite him over.  I'm okay to talk to anyone and give them more info.

If he was here and he posted that... here is how I would respond...

# Game lineup at launch will be under 40 titles. Probably under 30.

Yep.  I would say that our line-up will be anywhere from 30 - 40 or so titles.  Have said this from the start... so not really that much of a prediction.

# Late entry into FCC testing and cert will mean that console will be available in few stores at first. Also, I don't think the big boys will risk ordering a lot of inventory, no matter what TT says.

Completely wrong.  We already have everything in place and they have already ordered a lot of inventory.  It seems like he knows very little about how FCC testing works for our machine and how we've created it.  :)

# Ads will be cringy and old-fashioned. If they focus on the hardware, they will be negative compared to the Wii. If they focus on the software, they will be criticized for the lack of variety. They' ll have better luck spaming old people's FB timeline with static ads.

Our ads may totally be "cringy" to this person.  But as long as millions of families around the world like them... then I don't really care if random negative internet hater guy personally finds them "cringy".   :)

# No diversity associated with Amico in ads, very 70s. Family made up of parents, older son, younger daughter, grandparents. Same ethnicity.

What a stupid comment.  This just shows the lack of knowledge this person has.

# A couple of surprise IPs, that everyone will forget after two months.

So what.  Name me any video game system that hasn't had that?

# Not Ellen for Tommy. Biggest celebrity who will play with Amico will be Whoopie on The View (she will love it, of course).

Can't comment on this... but lets just say he should follow my social media to get a little more informed.  ;)

# Questionable manufacturing quality will make online ratings (Amazon?) not bright (3/5 stars).

It's at this point you can clearly tell that his only goal is to spout negative crap about something he knows nothing about.  But he poses all his comments as "predictions" so that's fine.  He's entitled to his own opinions.

But for the record... he's wrong again.  :)   What if I were to say that we have the same manufacturing partners as Sony PS and Nintendo?  Would he be willing to admit he has zero knowledge of what we're doing?

# NFC-related gimmick (Amiibo wannabe?) won't be a selling point, reinforces product's toy aura.

I have proof he's wrong here as well... but am unable to share it at this time.   :)

# Problems with unresponsive controllers (wifi, BT issues).

Sounds like this is person who got burned by Ouya and is trying to take his frustrations and disappointments out on us.   :D

WiFi & BT issues... he should watch our last MEET AMICO video.   Our bluetooth testing has been off the charts! :)

# Adverse global business environment (recession?) can make people care about every penny. The Amico may be perceived as too expensive, and people will turn to devices they already own or cloud services.

Hilarious comment and once again... zero knowledge of how economies and the entertainment and/or video game industry work.  First... it is widely known that entertainment and video games are one of the only recession proof categories.  This is very common knowledge.  The fact he doesn't know or understand that tells you all you need to know about the way he approaches discussing our platform.  During the last major world recession (2007 - 2010) the video game industry continued to rise each year at double digit figures.

But to take it a step further... if he thinks Amico is "too expensive" in a recession... then that means that the PS5 and XBOX X are really screwed!!   :)

# An "el cheapo" Xbox, under $200, can be a serious threat, even if it's just a dongle to access MS cloud.

Yet again, this comment shows his lack of knowledge about what we're doing and the audience we are going for.  You could give XBOX's away FOR FREE to people and they still wouldn't play it as it's too complicated and doesn't offer the experiences they are looking for.

# There will be hardcore fans, who will claim that it is the best console of all time. Most people will be indifferent. A minority (perhaps fewer people than the fans group) will say it's absolute crap. Potential for cult following, interesting for collectors.

You can tell this person is only viewing the console through their own eyes.  That's fine.  A lot of times people are unable to comprehend products past their own lenses.  He can predict anything he wants.  It's his complete and total right to do so.  And it's my complete and total right to say I'm going to take joy in proving him wrong.  :)

# Remarkable failure in international markets (perhaps 5k units in Germany and France -combined-)

Looking forward to proving those numbers wrong within the first 24 hours of release.   :)

# About 50k units in 2020, less than 100k for the 2021 holidays ( after price slashing). That would put a lot of pressure on the project and TT. Investors looking to get out. Plans to sell the company (Ouya anyone?). Possibly end up in the hands of a Chinese, or European holding company. Who knows, maybe Mattel will buy them out?

It's a "prediction" thread... so again... he's okay to predict whatever he likes.  And I'm okay to find great joy in eventually proving folks like this wrong.   :)

# No Amico II for you guys.

Yeah... he's right.

I would call it something else.  Not Amico II.    :D

Again... I would ask for this person to come here and have an adult and mature conversation with me and tell me why he is so against a video game machine thats mission is to bring family and friends back together.  Why so much negativity for something he's never played?  What is his goal in doing so?

Hi ! Remember when I talked about our tv show in Quebec that is the best opportunity of the year to reach a large audience !?

Here is a parody that proves that in Quebec we are aware that our children are left to themselves in front of video games,
and that we are ready to welcome a revolutionary console that will help parents!
I even have a few ideas to submit to them for a follow up and include Amico in their program for next year !!! lol (In addition to your advertising !)

The video is in French, so to put you into context, it's a couple eating. The man said " It smells so bad ! "
Suddenly, "2 things" come out of the room. The very surprised Man ask his girlfriend what's that!
She replies that these are her 2 childrens!!!!
He, in shock, replied that they had been dating for 8 years and she never told him about her having childrens !!
Later he tell her if the childs are only playing and sleeping ! And she respond no, they never sleep !
Etc.
So the childs are leaving the room because the game doesn't work anymore.
They can take the opportunity to go play outside. But the game quickly starts to work again! :)

The video begins at 32:10. It's only one minute long.

I hope you will enjoy it, even if it's in French ! :)

In markets where imported products carry a significant tariff, would there be the chance that IE partners with a local manufacturer and factory?

Yes.  We have multiple manufacturers but also (and more importantly) multiple "assemblers".  A lot of electronics are only made in China for example, you can't get them anywhere else.  So multiple factories may supply multiple parts that are then shipped to certain parts of the world to be assembled in the country with tariffs or a neighboring country in order to potentially avoid the tariff.  Very common practice for most electronic hardware devices of this nature.
