Intellivision Amico - Tommy Tallarico introduction + Q&A

Yes.  We have multiple manufacturers but also (and more importantly) multiple "assemblers".  A lot of electronics are only made in China for example, you can't get them anywhere else.  So multiple factories may supply multiple parts that are then shipped to certain parts of the world to be assembled in the country with tariffs or a neighboring country in order to potentially avoid the tariff.  Very common practice for most electronic hardware devices of this nature.

Very good! I believe Microsoft does such things, but Sony, not so much. So this is a nice thing to take into consideration!

And you are the elected arbiter of where a conversation goes exactly how?

It goes nowhere and ends up in people commenting on their looks. The only way to shut them up is for the console to be a success and show them there is a place for it.

I like what the console stands for, but I will also call out comments like the one I quoted. Despite disagreeing there have been comments and such deleted on this thread. In fact there was one right before my quoted comment that was deleted.

This thing is geared for family friendly fun. I don't think it looks good for Tommy to comment on Pat and Ian's looks, etc. That is the type of stuff the parents who you want to buy this system deal with their kids experiencing in school etc. I get he doesn't respect them, but I think he should stand above that and make them eat their words with how well Amico does.

He isn't going to automatically win everyone over. Some it will take time and more than a house visit or guest on a podcast etc.

I don't like the Switch talk because I could easily say the Amico will be exposing kids to more dangerous things in the world than the Switch by encouraging them to use a cell phone as a controller. But is that true? Yeah in the sense that kids can play violent video games, find porn, or even chat with undesirables on the phone. BUT that isn't what the Amico is actually doing. It is on the parents to parent. So if the parents let their kid use a phone as a controller it isn't Amico's fault if they do any of the mentioned stuff.

My nephew has a Switch and doesn't have a one of the games Tommy showed in his one post. Why? Because my brother and his wife parent. There are tons of family friendly games on the Switch so acting like its the worst thing out there is silly. Just like me blaming Amico for kids using cell phones in a bad way would be. Yes the Amico will have a 100% family friendly but as a parent you should still BE INVOLVED in all of that. Kid wants to buy Shark Shark? I don't care if it is an E rated game, the parent should always be involved in what their kid is up to and doing.

Before I'm questioned on it I will give my gatekey stats...

I'm a parent and have helped raise kids who weren't mine. I've worked in mental health. Have a Masters in Education. Work with kids on the daily and deal with things that if their parents were more involved I wouldn't have to mess with. So if I question or have a criticism on the system I DO understand what it is wanting to do. I am excited for this thing but also will state if I see something off.

Sorry for the long reply Blarneo. Not all of it was for you. 👍

To stay on topic....

So will we or does anyone else think Intellivision will do demos of other games other than Moon Patrol?

If possible when it gets closer to release it would be cool to see small demos of the included games, or do you think that would ruin the experience of purchasing the system and playing them day one?

I only responded to that, Beefy, because it seemed a bit too paternalistic and authoritarian for a forum filled with fully grown Gen Xers.

Its all good. I only quoted that one comment because I found it ironic that some of the same stuff here is happening.

I do it in this thread when folks bring them up because it's funny to most of the folks in here who know the history and how they lie about me.   I'm not doing it to them on their YouTube channel or calling them out publicly on Twitter, etc.  I care nothing about them and I'm sure their negativity is only going to get bigger and bigger as the system becomes more and more popular and gets more press.  I don't not engage with them in any way, shape or form, yet they consistently bad mouth me and purposely lie about me to hundreds of thousands of potential customers for the sole reason of making a few hundred more bucks for themselves.

If folks don't want them discussed... then please stop bringing them up in my Q&A thread and expect me to ignore the question posed.   :)

You don't like the Switch talk?  Why not?  What is wrong with discussing the differences between Amico & Switch when Switch is brought up?  Although Switch currently has the most family friendly content for the home console... it also has the most very mature and x-rated vile content.  Amico doesn't.  Let me ask you a question... until I posted those screen shots from Switch games... did you know that kind of content existed on the Switch?  Please be honest.  Were you surprised at all?  Were you fearful that young kids could easily find that stuff because parents think that stuff like that would never exist on a Nintendo product (so they don't even bother learning about Parental Controls).  The Switch needs parental controls for young children which most non-gaming parents find confusing and aren't using.  Most parents buy it, put it under the tree... and then don't think about it again.  Parents don't even realize what content their kids could be playing on the Switch.  With Amico... they don't need to worry at all.  Ever.  The Switch store is very confusing and not intuitive.  Articles have been written and pretty much every person in here agreed.  Amico won't have that problem.  None of those things should be seen as bashing the Switch... no one is making anything up or saying people shouldn't buy a Switch.  It's just the facts and some of the ways we're different and where we see we can make our mark and fill an obvious gap that most folks don't talk about.  Nintendo is a $40 BILLION company... we are not.  They tower over us and they are amazing.  But I also think it's safe to say that more hardcore gamers prefer Sony, Microsoft & PC gaming over Switch gaming.  Not a knock on Nintendo... just a stat.

Is it only okay if everyone questions Amico and no one is allowed to use Nintendo as a reference even though Amico is being compared to them?  So when people say "Switch already does that" I'm supposed to say... "Oh, okay... I guess I'm stupid then and should kill the entire project."

Also... to be clear... I or Intellivision never "encourage" kids to use cell phones as a controller.  If you've checked out some of my longer interviews I always say the exact opposite.  You'll hear me say things like kids should NOT be playing games all the time and that parents playing with their kids is a positive thing as opposed to by themselves (which is mostly what is happening with the Switch).  Saying that kids are going to find porn because their parents are going to let them use a cell phone to play Amico is (like you said) a silly argument and comparison. Why wouldn't a parent just let the kids use the controllers?

I totally agree that the ultimate responsibility lies with the parents.  But you're using your personal example and thinking the rest of the world is just like you.  It's not.  The data shows the opposite.  The reality of parenting in the 21st century across the world is that parents find it very difficult to always watch over what their kids are watching/playing/listening too.  There are too many devices and ways to get info... and how about when they go to their friends houses?  You can't "helicopter" parent all the time.  Having a machine that parents don't need to EVER WORRY ABOUT IT makes us a LOT more desirable to a young parent than a machine that has the worst video game content out of every home system.  You may hate me saying it... but it doesn't stop the fact that it's true.  To be clear, I never said the Switch is the "worst thing out there"... for gaming.. it's currently the BEST home game machine for kids.  But that's my point... it could be better for kids and quite frankly... their focus is not 4 - 8 year olds (biggest family demographic)... we see that and will focus on it.  They don't.  Nothing wrong with them not... but it does make us different and the facts are the facts... the Switch is the machine that has the most "worst" content for kids and most parents don't even realize this stuff is available.  Doesn't make them evil or wrong... but it does make us more likable for young families when they see the comparison of what is available on the Switch.  And I'm supposed to be silent about this? (like the rest of the industry seems to be).  I'm not allowed to bring it up?  Why not.  Of course I'm going to bring it up because it's true and when people tell us to "go away" because "no one wants this" because "Switch already exists"... then the words need to be spoken and reminded.

I think this is why you are personally so passionate about this topic... which is cool.  Because you see it and live it every day and you wish parents were more involved.  I get it.  We are providing a safe solution that parents NEVER need to worry about which helps to take one of the problems away.  And if you ask all the parents of all the kids you work with... (the ones who have Switches)... ask the parents if they've set the Parental Controls on the Switch.  I know the stats and I have the research.  You wouldn't like the answer.  It isn't pretty.  It's the reason why the only Nintendo video that has comments DISABLED is their Parental Control video.  So although it is totally commendable to want parents to get more involved with what their kids are doing.  The sad fact is that the world is different from when we grew up.  There are more single parent homes than ever before... or homes with 2 working parents.  And those folks need help.  And Amico will be there.

Yes.  More demos will come... but it isn't our main focus right now.  Over the next month we are focusing on completing the hardware and then testing the CRAP out of it for a few more months before it goes into production.

Your 2nd question is an interesting one that I would love to get feedback on from the folks in here (regarding demo's ruining the day 1 experience).  Please let me know.

Well... this is a forum to ask me questions about Amico and engage in (hopefully) a positive way.  So I would push back a little on the "irony" comparison.  :)

There won't be any in the case of Amico, but there's a difference between what Nintendo allows to be released on its eshop, and "what Nintendo puts out" though. And "giggling Japanese school girls and anime power surge grunts with flashing backgrounds" is a very inaccurate description of "what Nintendo puts out"; it's a shame because it detracts from the real point of the message.

... Yeah..

Except it kinda is accurate though..

There's the extreme "anime power surge" (or whatever verbiage you prefer) with flashing backgrounds featured as the victory card for every character in Super Smash Bros Ultimate.  Plus all their intense, "I'm gonna arch and create this psyionic supernova/mega blast that annihilates all life as we know it from my chest" flex that happens with every special move.  There's the dozen-plus zoom in power surge release bursts for the fans in the Pokemon Sword & Shield trailer.. the intense hyper release bursts of Pokken Tournament.  Certainly no slow-downs and zoom ins for grunts as protagonists let unleashed their special ultra flashy powerful waves-of-energy attacks in Astral Chain's trailer.  ... and it must be my imagination that it is 1.5 seconds of the Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE trailer, or about every three seconds for the Hyrule Warriors trailer.  Even Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney- Spirit of Justice has the flashy character zooms we're all accustomed to before intense releases of some special attack/effect.  Likewise in the Fire Emblem series, in Daemon X Machina, lots of power-up special attack suspended in mid-air zooms for Kirby Star Allies.. I don't need to link the entire library, do I?

.. and as to giggling Japanese school girls, need I link to the impossibly saccharine, giggly entrance clip and bell purse power swings of *Dream Girl* Marin in Hyrule Warriors?  Then there's the whole episode in Breath of the Wild in meeting the inexplicably juvenile, impish and cutesy Purah.  The countless NPCs in games from Breath of the Wild to Xenoblade whose only character trait seems to be childlike naivete or flirty boy craziness.. it's a thing.

No, I'm talking about Retro Advisory Board's comment. Once again, Switch is far from perfect, and I agree with the global meaning of his comment; it indeed doesn't cater to casual audience as much as the Wii and the DS. But the statement I quoted is at best very caricatural, and I think it weakens his point. How can one convince people by making fun or attacking their taste?

If the Switch is not a real competitor to Amico, there's no point of bashing it and it's possible to point out its flaws without being offensive or being dishonest. After all, people can buy an Amico as well as a Switch or any other console. That's probably what I'll do!

Then maybe you missed the point, because it didn't attack anyone's taste or attack any one.  Or even attack the art form.  I pointed out a prevalence of these "caricatures" or common presentations.. in most Directs, in a number of the most prominent trailers.. they don't resonate for a broader adult crowd.. it isn't any different than tropes you see in Hollywood, in Bollywood movies, on Broadway, in the 100th Marvel movie presenting yet another all-of-humanity-is-at-stake-but-the-hero-really-never-is-in-danger (but we'll give you a gratifying twenty minute punching sequence with the baddy in lieu of suspended belief there is real danger or belief).  To someone not consuming said product, they communicate what it is as much as they do to a person who consumes the art form.    I'm also a firm Nintendo supporter (note the NES controller on my YouTube avatar in that comment) so dishonest I don't get - not sure what I was lying about.  Nearly all the games linked above, I enjoyed.  As someone for whom the niche is crafted though.  I get where the caricatures come from.  I've consumed more than my share of anime import for decades..  I get that the powerful release trope emanates from the manga, to show rage or fulfillment, and is a product of the art form.  And I get the whole kawaii culture of cuteness or adorableness that manifests in presentation and childlike mannerisms, and it isn't just Nintendo presenting in such a way.  Square is notorious for it, some of Capcom's games have similar art direction, it's completely cultural.

But none of that means anything to a casual audience, for whom the entire appeal outside of Japanese cultural influences has a lower ceiling.  It's still a centerpiece of Nintendo's continuing presentation.  And I don't mind art styles for varying tastes, or a predominance of any one, or one's that aren't for me.  But I think we can fairly and with minimal bias observe the Big N's presentation and conclude:  Yeah, casuals in North America, in Europe, South America, MENA.. the games' art direction (or marketing in particular with the trailer) isn't a response or catering to their tastes so much, certainly not anyone whose childhood didn't heavily lean into Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z, Pokemon or the crystalizing anime of the mid-to-late 80s.  It's beautiful, but speaks to a younger demographic.  And that isn't synonymous with "family appeal".

... sorry for the long reply, I am straying way off-topic.  Feel free to message me directly if you wish.  Back to inquiries, debate, discussion, an all things Amico.

Interested to know what Switch owners in here think.  I completely agree and I've been saying this for a few years now.  Interested to know if others agree or disagree... or somewhere in between.

On the main menu screen and the quick menu.  It's clean, quick and responsive.  It's pretty easy to find what you're looking for.  You can put the Switch on Airplane mode on the quick menu.  I had to use that since the Switch is too far from the router to keep a stable connection and drain the battery little less. PS4 is pretty hard to find what you're looking for, where's the download list?

However, the Switch store is kinda hard to navigate and browse.  If I'm in a mood to get a new Switch game, I look on-line for videos and reviews on games.  Then I use the search function on the Switch to type in the exact title to bring up the games.  It'll disconnect you from the store if it lose the wifi signal.

Never be sorry for a long reply.  I think everyone appreciates the level of detail whether for or against.  I know I do.

I totally get what you're saying and where we differ a bit is that I actually can't stand all the stuff you mentioned.  :)  I can appreciate it... but I can't consume it.  It just rubs me the wrong way.  Again... that is my personal opinion and I wouldn't put down others who differ or tell them they are wrong for liking that.  I think your points are dead on.  I also believe it's part of the reason that Nintendo lost so much market share to Sony & Microsoft in the late 90's.  PS & XBOX were offering a different kind of home console gaming.  Imagine where home gaming would be without them??  But again... this isn't to disparage Nintendo in any way.  They have a good thing going (kicked Microsofts ass this generation!), but Sony & Microsoft proved that there are different pockets of people who enjoy different ways to present gaming.  And that is what I feel Amico will do as well.  We are providing something different from the others.  Where graphics and storyline aren't the most important elements.  Where gameplay and playing together and simplicity rule the day.  Where playability is more important than budgets and a 100% safe place for families and friends to enjoy games together... no matter what your skill level.

Yeah... we were mainly talking about the Switch store.  It seems like everyone has an issue with it.  Might be an after effect to the fact that there are so many titles available... but I don't know... I could think of about 5 or 6 really easy ways to make it a lot more searchable and better for the consumer.  I'm sure we all could!

Even though technically, most of the games you named (Pokémon, Astral Chain, Hyrule Warriors) were not developed by Nintendo, and Phoenix Wright games are published by Capcom and appear on other consoles as well... ;) You also posted a link to a Hatsune Miku video, which appeared first on Sony consoles.

Anyway, you clearly don't like the anime style, and I'm not a fan of it either, but I know a lot of people who would feel really offended by the way you describe it. If you said it the way you did in the last paragraph of your last comment, I wouldn't have said anything because, once again, I agree with you. ^^ As you say it yourself, it's not a lot of more childish than so-called mature stuff on Xbox and Sony consoles anyway. 😕

It's clearly a factor since I heard the same criticisms towards every online store: Steam, App Store, PSN, etc. I think the key would be to customize the layout depending on the user, even though it's tricky as well; after a few years, Netflix still doesn't understand what I like... ^^' I remember a friend bashing the 3DS eShop because he was only interested in big games by Nintendo, but third party publishers wouldn't like their games to get buried under Nintendo stuff. -_-

Yeah.  It definitely improvable.  I did like how Sony organized their store a lot better before they remade it RAM hungry with rows and rows of images, until it locks up a PS3.   On PSP Vita if I remembered. You basically, pick a category, games -> PSP games -> A-E -> Then it list the game and price. Click on the game that interest you, then you can read about it and decide.  That is quick way to see all the games it has without loading a bunch of images.

Thanks Tommy

Hi Amico Tony... I saw that our "friend" replied on Reddit.  It's clear from his response that he's a scorned AtariAge poster with an axe to grind.  I'd recommend ignoring him moving forward.

Because you are new to the boards here, I can tell you this (and the mods will back me up)... I do not have the power to BAN anyone and I don't ask mods to ban people.   I enjoy the back and forth... but some folks have come here just to try and annoy and bully people.  And it's pretty clear to the mods here when it happens.  I've noticed that the mods here are fair, lenient and will give warnings to folks (even me!) when the rules are broken.  I've gotten 2 or 3 posts removed by mods even over the past few weeks!  Doesn't sound like a place that I control does it?  :)  So for someone to get banned in here... they must have continued to break rules or harrass people and the mods (on their own) took action.

I copied and pasted his response for others to comment (incluing the mods) if they'd like.   People who have been here awhile (or anyone who wants to read 172 pages worth of posts!) can clearly see that he's not being genuine.  Does anyone here believe that the reason he got banned was because he correctly guessed Amico's memory configuration??!??!   What the hell is he even talking about?  The things folks make up never cease to amaze me.   I actually don't even remember talking to people about memory configuration... and we certainly wouldn't ban anyone for doing it.  This dude clearly has some issues going on.  In his mind... he thinks I had him banned because he guessed Amico's memory configuration??  And he thinks I then talked to a mod to get him banned and have his post removed?  Again... would love a mod or two to weigh in on this "for the record" so we can forever put the rumor to bed that I have that kind of power or request people to get banned and have thier posts removed.  I can literally only think of 1 occassion when someone kept coming in here just spouting negative stuff over and over again.  But folks here (including myself) publicly debated him... but it was clear he wasn't here for the conversation or to learn anything... his only goal was to annoy as many people as possible.  And again... I told him publicly that the reason this thread was created wasn't to bash the system.  So maybe it's that dude. I think he had Sega in his username or something.  Who knows... who cares.

Anyway... I had to chuckle and respond to you about it when I saw what he wrote you.  Would LOVE to see his so-called screenshot.  Have him post it on Reddit and tell him to make sure to show his username here so the mods can tell everyone what he "really" got banned for.  :)

Okay... back to editing this video I'll be putting out on Monday.  No new footage...  just a 2019 compilation video of positive things that influencers, analysts and YouTubers said about the system.  Making it for investors and thought it would be cool to share with everyone else as well.

Hi Amico-Tony, I didn't expect Tommy himself to "evaluate" my predictions. Thanks, i guess.
I can't comment on the AtariAge thread, since I was banned. There is a tendency that any exchange of comments with Tommy ends up with me being banned, and unable to reply to him.

In my defense, I was banned for (among other things) correctly guessing Amico's memory configuration (16/2), in a now-deleted post, although I do keep a screenshot. I guess Tommy "couldn't handle the truth".

Now we have to wait.

But in his response he did say he enjoyed all those titles.  But more importantly... who cares if people feel offended by his description.  Since when do people care about people's feeling on the internet?   :)

3rd party publishers have no choice.  :)

Yet another difference between Switch & Amico.  Because ALL of our titles are considered 1st party... everyone gets the same exact fair shake and attention.  Developers really love this.  No one ever needs to worry about being buried.  Talk to any Switch developer and they'll tell you how difficult it is to get seen or to get any attention once thier product is released in the Switch store.  Again (I feel I need to keep saying this over and over) I'm NOT bashing Nintendo... I'm just stating facts and knowledge that has been given to me by developers and giving yet another example of a way we approach things differently to the others.  Why?  Because we've been in the industry for so long and know what all the current issues are.

# Game lineup at launch will be under 40 titles. Probably under 30.

Yep.  I would say that our line-up will be anywhere from 30 - 40 or so titles.  Have said this from the start... so not really that much of a prediction.

I have to say this one cracks me up. 30-40 games is a CRAP TONNE of games for a launch. Not sure why they thought 'under 40' or even 'under 30' was bad. Most consoles launch with just a handful of games. I mean ten games on launch is more than enough to provide a lot of variety and as a bonus, if there were only ten games on launch I could afford all of them on Amico :D Actually, now that I think about it - it may be the only console I'll ever be able to buy every game for as it's released!

As a New Zealander I feel your name is cultural appropriation 🤣🤣🤣

That was the Nintendo Switch post full of boobies, wasn't it. :P

So what are some properties that you would like to see the Amico licensing to make a game from?  A few off the top of my head The Last Starfighter I know there is an NES game but I think it’s just a reckoned space shooter I would like to see one more like the arcade featured in the movie and I think the the Amico controller will be perfect for this I am also aware of the fan made game which is a lot of fun but I struggle with keyboard controls.

Purple People Eater it’s a fun song and one of my favorite movies growing up and having a furry purple cyclops with a unicorn type horn that sounds like a musical instrument a sax if I remember correctly was just fun, and since he wants to join a rock band it would give Tommy a chance to add some rocking tunes

i was hoping to add more suggestions but it’s almost 5am here and mr brain doesn’t want to think anymore lol

If possible when it gets closer to release it would be cool to see small demos of the included games, or do you think that would ruin the experience of purchasing the system and playing them day one?

Your 2nd question is an interesting one that I would love to get feedback on from the folks in here (regarding demo's ruining the day 1 experience).  Please let me know.

In my opinion releasing small demos of the included games could be helpful for those people that need to know what they are going to buy but, at the same time, you must be very careful about the ways you use to promote these demos, avoiding pubishing names, screen shots or videos or anything else that could ruin the surprise effect (yes, I will love to discover them by myself... :)).

For example publishing simple links (without any name/image/video preview or in the link text) pointing to those demos could me an effective way to do this and mantain "the secret" at the same time.

The main problem with demos is that you can only offer mobile (and maybe web based) versions before Amico is released of course. And as we've seen with Moon Patrol, it's difficult to convey the idea that the real game could not be done on mobile. It depends on the game, though.

I love the appearance of paprium_fiasco (the negative reddit user). The Nintendo discussion was going nowhere (and I am partly to blame), but this guy is pretty entertaining to read, he's like a cool comic book super-villain (Luthor, Darkseid, Dr. Doom) when you are tired of pathetic guys with costumes that are barely a menace to the main hero(es).

He even has an origin story: He was "born" in a weird accident (he created his Reddit account out of his frustration after the Genesis game Paprium, a Kickstarter that went wrong). The fact that he spends so much free time on things he hate makes him a lovable character and, while some of his predictions have been proved to be plain lies due to the lack of information on the subject, a few of his negative ideas are still possible/worth debating and, thanks to him, Tommy has written one of the most interesting replies in this topic (the long one in the previous page)... Just like Superman vs. Luthor, in the end it's a very entertaining fight to watch/read compared to the regular villains/haters (people who accuse a CEO of spamming his company on its own official Q&A topic).

Now Tommy, in spite of my user name (and that I just compared you with a superhero and your critics with villains), these are just parodies and auto-parodies. I'm pretty sure I will buy your console to play with my family, but I don't even have an HD television in my own house so I will probably give the console to my mum as a gift so we all can play in her house. I like the project and the idea of contributing with ideas or speaking about it in other forums to help people know about it, but I'm not obsessed with it nor will spend more than $400 on the machine and its games. My days of true fanboyism (blindly accepting everything a company/music band/artist releases) are long gone, the Amico (and its unexpectedly entertainment promotion and discussion among lovers and haters) is a funny experiment for me in a time where modern consoles don't interest me anymore.

I mention all this because there is one particular aspect of the Amico that I find a bit worrying: the controller. It looks like a smartphone, but is it really that comfortable to hold? Doesn't it feel weird to press buttons on the touch screen? The d-disc looks good but it's quite different to the rest of controllers out there, are people adapting quickly to it in the tests? I know you already said that everyone who has tried the controllers liked them, but I guess I need to try it myself to be a believer. 👼

I think it can ruin the experience. It's not like a game with open world and have 50 hours to play, and a lot of story content to discover.

So I prefer screenshot, then later small video of the game you are working on. We have to know what the game is like before buying it, but testing it can be a bad idea. (Except for showroom and tv shows !)

If not, choose the demo games carefully, and keep some secrets and surprises about the game for when we will buy them. :)

I totally agree with that !

With Moon Patrol, I will be a buyer day one for this game, but playing it on my cell I really dislike it. I want real buttons ! :) (also with a big screen ! ;) lol )

Well that's clearly a total load of crap.

Just me alone got into a snot-fest about The Walt Disney Company with Tommy & a mod stepped in, and a smaller side jab about Math Fun. I'm still here posting away and I get a free Hockey game too! So There Pablum Fiasco! 😜
