Intellivision Amico - Tommy Tallarico introduction + Q&A

Yes... that is one of the perks of the Founders Edition.  But it would be a few days before... not weeks.  :)

If you don't give me one I'll send you a truckload of Marmite. I know where you live :P

EDIT - Actually I've thought things through. I could buy many Amicos for the price of a truckload of Marmite. And I like Marmite, so I'll just buy my own Amico and Marmite. AND THERE'S NOTHING YOU CAN DO TO STOP ME!

We are also considering doing a special FOUNDERS EDITION in the Vintage Woodgrain.  A special hand numbered signed version with a TON of extras (so much cool stuff that you could only get with the Founders Edition).  Thinking about launching that program at the end of this month.  Would only be limited to a few thousand machines.  We would do the Vintage Woodgrain as a normal Special Edition as well... but the Founder's Edition version would be the most special and unique and HUGE value (i.e. tons of free games, etc.).  Just a way to thank all the folks who are currently watching and supporting us.  We must get at least 10 or 15 e-mails a day for people asking us for this.

Would be interested in hearing peoples thoughts.

This is my thought: I can't wait! :D

What other small "perks" do you think would make it really cool?

Signed & Numbered console

Limited Edition 3D Lenticular Running Man poster signed by the entire team

For me these are the two perks I would like to receive in the Founders Edition, signed and numbered console on top of all.

As an alternative to the signed console (which I still prefer) could be the signed box, like the Blue Sky Rangers did some year ago with the Intellivision Flashback.

Actually... when we launched the new website everything now says "around" $200.  It is a constant moving target.  Upgrading the screens, other stuff I can't mention and the amazing packaging and extras we are putting together will potentially drive the MSRP past $200... and we still don't know about the tariffs (although it's looking like they will not happen).  But I'm also trying to keep as much stuff as I can in the Americas... which costs a little more as well.

These are issues we discuss every single day with our team of people, the retailers, focus groups, our manufacturer, etc.

The machine quality and build of the machine we have now is actually a lot better than we originally planned for 2 years ago when we made those first press releases.

The goal was to let people know that we are going for AFFORDABLE here without sacrificing quality.  Upgrading the screens on the controller (and wait everyone sees the super cool and unique packaging) was a big deal and a lot more costly for manufacturing.  But it HAD to be done as it makes such a huge difference.  Everyone will thank me later.   :D

We won't know the final retail price until the beginning of April.

Also important to note that the Special Limited Editions will be at a premium because they cost a lot more to make.

Hi Tommy,

the Founder edition is a great idea. I personally want one, but being in the UK would it be available to me?

Don't forget, it's brainstorming here ...   ;) lol

A) One of the perks easy to add from my point of view, at low cost if not no cost at all, is receiving our founders edition a few days before launch.

B) I really like the idea of having our name ( My name and my son's name ) on a "Thank you" credits scroll. ( 5 games included with the system). ( Like GrudgeQ said )

C) On the box, ( If possible because you are saying it's a special one ) I would like something like a dedication.

Example " For our early supporters and believers, here is a special Amico for MY NAME and/or CHILDRENS NAME(S) "

D) Our names engraved on each controller. ( MY NAME on controller #1, MY SON on controller #2 )

It could be possible at an additionnal cost to have additionnal controllers for those that wants more names engraved.

E) Instead of 50$ on digital games, maybe 20% discount for life on digital contents, or for 5 years ...  or 2 years ...   ?  lol  😅

So it could be a package of all the things you will decide, or maybe, (but I think you will say it's too complicated) that every "founders" could choose from a list.
Because each one has their own taste. It could be like options when you are buying a car.

Examples :
Add on 1 : Receiving Amico 3 to 5 days before launch.      20$

Add on 2 : Names on a thank you credits scroll.                  5$ for each name

Add on 3 : Dedication on Amico Box.                                 20$

Add on 4 : Personnal name engraved on a controller.         25$ for each controller

Add on 5 : 20% discount on digital games first year.          40$

Add on 6 : ETC .

Have a nice day everyone.

$50 digital game certificate

Signed & Numbered console

Limited Edition 3D Lenticular Running Man poster signed by the entire team

Getting the console a few days before everyone else

Special drawing ONLY for Founding Members... Grand Prize is trip for 2 to California to get tour of Intellivision & help us create/design a game.

These are just a few ideas off the top of my head.

What else!!??!??!

Please let me know!!

Hi Tommy,

I have to pause for thought quickly and agree with GrudgeQ - I think $199 has to be aim for the base model in retail. With that said, the founders edition is a great idea:

$50 digital game certificate - This is super value and offsets in the mind any increased cost

Signed & Numbered console - Again, great idea and good selling point

Limited Edition 3D Lenticular Running Man poster signed by the entire team - Ok, nice to have - to be honest I am not too bothered about this

Getting the console a few days before everyone else - Yes this is a selling point to me, but being in the UK will this actually materialize before its in stores?

Special drawing ONLY for Founding Members... Grand Prize is trip for 2 to California to get tour of Intellivision & help us create/design a game. - Yes, I'm in for this. How awesome. Although unlikely to win this is a huge draw for me.

Other Ideas to consider:

Early access to the web version of the Amico Store - so I can claim my username early and browse the store.

Special drawing for Games Live Concert in region of choice with backstage pass

A special identifier on my profile (similar to xbox's number of years...) which states founder? If not possible then maybe a gold border around my profile picture or something... Just a thought...

kind regards

Tony

Yeah... for sure.  You would probably have more of shipping expense... but we are making them PAL/NTSC compatible so it shouldn't be an issue.

Great stuff. . .

I echo the sentiments about being able to early access to be able to have first choice at usernames. Also a certificate and Founder number or code, that such account could be identified or otherwise tagged as such within the online community. Perhaps a profile feature that shows the specific model a player is using.

I'll probably have others, but those were the first to jump into my mind. . .

I certainly like the idea of early access to the console!

As well as the $50 credit.

I think the audience for this version of the console will be like me and want the original Intellivision games ( as well as re-imagined )

But IF the console will run an Intellivision emulator, including any classic intellivision games would be a nice perk for me.

This is a nice "perk" as this may not be as big of a deal to the general audience.

Maybe games like Burgertime and Bump n Jump cannot be included, as they would be packaged with the re-imagined release?? And I would think licensing fees would come into play.

WISH LIST games:

I have always wanted a Parsec release for the Intellivision.  But now I want a re-imagined version!

It is also still the Holiday Season...  A re-imagined version of Christmas Carol would be cool.  It is already a favorite of mine.  But expanded would be awesome!

Any Marble Madness type games?  Just wondering how the motion control would work with this type of game?

Also from earlier, Tennis was talked about.  I know using the 16x9 makes us want to do things horizontal.  But with these controllers, vertical first person seems logical to me.

Use the width of the screen for Doubles!  It is a shared experience console after all :)

Thanks!

Nintendo fanboi gotta fanboy. Don't you get it? Only ONE, UNO, EIN game system should be allowed to be on the market at a time, and they all have to be made by Nintendo.🙄

I mean... why develop your own system, employ hundreds of people, create much needed jobs and choose your own destiny when you can pay Nintendo $16 a game in licensing fees & let them bury your game in shovelware?

Fanboi or fancuck at this point? And to think the Big N gave him major grief on that book of his and he still comes back for more...

Here's a racing co-op game suggestion for you.

Great American Cross-country Road Race. Up to 8 players... One controller drives, the other has a map on the controller, because they have no idea where they are going other that the route on the map.  Split the screen for every 2 players, maximum 4 screens if possible.  Using a "3D" style behind the car look like the original game, Turbo, Pole Position, Pit Stop... etc.  Or even make it look like Accolade's Test Drive series.  Include wrong turns, fuel stops, road obstacles, construction, weather...etc ... Police... Etc.

The Original 1-player Activision game was very popular, no reason why a remake wouldn't be.

Then do several other versions... Europe, African, Australian...etc.

Several cars.. American Muscle Cars (65 Sport Fury...Lol)... European Cars (drive your Ferrari).. Japanese... You get the idea.

Or just name it 10,000 Mile Race...etc.

That game is also great on Atari 8-bit. Would love to see a 5200 conversion, not to mention modding the game into Roadblasters on those systems. Sorry, had to chime in there. Back to the scheduled programming.

That would be a good one also... but only the folks in here would get that.  And the press wouldn't talk about it.

The other idea however....

I like the 2600 idea!  Thats a good one!

Also, instead of signing it, just badge it differently.  Meaning, change something on it that will make it different and unique.  I know you're doing the wood grain, but make the emblems different than the woodgrain someone else will get over the counter or on Amazon.  Make the boot up screen say something different so you know for SURE it's a FF unit.

Signed boxes and all that are good, but it doesn't make it special.  Much like a Sears unit to a standard 2609.  You know you have a Sears chipset as soon as you boot it up

Hi!,

Thanks so much for the post.  Appreciate you coming here and joining the conversation.

So glad you and your family enjoyed Video Games Live!!  Colorado Springs is such a beautiful place!  I remember how bummed I was that we had to leave the next day and I didn't get a chance to enjoy it more.  I remember going there as a kid with my dad and we went to this awesome wildlife type zoo.  Is that still around?  I remember it not feeling like a typical zoo... but more like a reserve.  I would have been in the early 80's.

I'm using the same ideas behind Video Games Live with Intellivision as well.  Making something for everyone (no matter if you're a hardcore gamer or not).  :)

I never had an Odyssey 2 back in the day so I definitely need to check out Smithereens!  Thanks for the tip!  Also don't know the Atari stuff you mentioned so I'll check those concepts out as well.

Thanks again for stopping by and I hope you'll check in and comment from time to time.  Please feel free to let me know if you have any questions about Amico.

Thanks!

Add another vote for the homebrew game Downfall that's on a lot of Atari platforms [Falcon030, Jaguar, etc]. It's simple, fun, and addictive.

It would be cool to have a family-friendly FPS like MIDI Maze/FaceBall 2000. It hasn't been seen on a *modern* console since the 16-bit console wars.

What about Warlords?  Or is [air quotes] Atari [end air quotes] keeping that IP strictly for the VCS? Maybe take Fred to Taco Bell for lunch and then he'll license it for the Amico.

Tempest 4000 is pretty dope on the Xbox One. It most likely could run on the Amico - and strikes me as a good fit - since Txk could run on a PS Vita. If Jeff Minter isn't already involved, it would surprise me because this seems like it's totally up his alley.

Sears Super Arcade II?  TandyVision II?

I'm reminded of how much a lot of us as kids hated all of those different variants, especially Sears re-labelling 2600 games and now a lot of those variants are highly sought after amongst collectors today. The Tandy [Radio Shack] version of the Intellivision console was probably the best looking version of it.

Thinking of ideas for the Founders Edition (FE) gives me a lot of thoughts about other drawings, events.  No need to tie everything to the purchase of a premier FE console that already has half a dozen perks.  But, there are a few options you guys could promote.

Does your office in Irvine maintain a sidewalk?  We all know the Hollywood stars walk of fame.  I'm a big Mets fan, so when CitiField was built, we jumped at the chance to purchase a personalized brick on the walkway around the ballpark.. integrated with thousands of other fans' bricks, sections all paying homage to Mets greats.  Would love to see Intellivision similarly pay homage to the many, many employees, game designers, manufacturers, and people who made Intellivision happen over the years.  A little Intellivision Hall of Fame ceremony each December 3rd to recognize the many Blue Sky Rangers would be poignant.  But giving fans an option to have a personalized brick laid with the thousands of Mattel Electronics and APh Consulting and Intellivision employees over the decades (maybe a seperate section, maybe making up a Running Man wall.. could be something people purchasing a Founders Edition find appealing.

People also like voicemail recordings, maybe a prize could be an Amico controller that operates as a soundboard of so many of the classic and new Intellivision sounds?  Once you've built the one, maybe ten or twenty are doable as a custom in-house project.

Other ideas for drawings, contests, events that could garner a little word-of-mouth or local news coverage or just be a fun way to get the product in people's hands:

  • Clearly we're all passionate about new ideas for our favorite games.  What if one of the periodic prizes on the Golden Ticket, or for the Founders Edition console, was a handful of regional winners who get to go with Tommy, some of the developers to the best arcade in the area, play a dozen or so, maybe twenty cabinets, and do a brainstorming session after (maybe have a "family-style" meal, no on-brand message there..) on gameplay ideas and translating play mechanics to the Amico controller.  Intellivision has some idea of the licenses it's looking or working on, in negotiation to procure.  Don't have to name which, but some player feedback across the board on what makes them fun, what could be added.
  • Touring High Score Challenge Roadshow.  Intellivision hosts some regional events, inviting families to play, cheer on in a live event.. modest prizes, maybe an Amico, a discount coupon for the games store.. maybe these events are filmed for marketing - maybe families have to wear awful matching sweaters like Supermarket Sweeps.. naaaah...
  • Would love to see five themed go-carts... GTO Red, Obsidian Black, Galaxy Purple, Glacier White and Vintage Woodgrain.. take over a local track as an event.
  • Speaking of themed.. if only Tommy knew a car guy.. like a reknown car guy who did stand-up and has any sort of history with Intellivision.. and wanted to feature, let's say a 1979 or 1980 station wagon, a Plymouth Volare, a Buick Estate Wagon, a Chevy Impala or Malibu Classic or Ford Fairmont wagon... and do an episode *completely* restoring it to vintage woodgrain and gold, but completely ingratiating it with Intellivision features.. maybe a radio featuring a polished gold disc and number pad, maybe an 8-track player that has an Intellivision cart placed when not in use.  Maybe some fuzzy dice with the classic Black Jack and Poker dealer peaking over the rearview mirror.  Maybe some lighting in the glove compartment that simulates Star Strike when a button is pressed.  You know, dive head first into classic Intellivision themes.  And then, for the kicker, because Intellivision is about bringing that family experience to a new generation, you drive in a baby blue Intellivision themed modern SUV.. a CRV, Rogue or something.. the baseboards have similar LED lighting, the hubcaps look like the controller discs.. there's an integrated Amico system for the road trips and set of four controllers.  Seats feature HD rumble, you know, when mom or dad just want to sit in the car for extra minutes feeling that Astrosmash.. "You kids just head in, I'll be right there... ::vvrrrrrrrrrrr::"
  • For any regional Intellivision events, theme scavenger hunts around things featured in games.. maybe if they complete two levels of Moon Patrol together, people get a puzzle to figure out where a destination on foot will be to play the next Intellivision game... then complete another level or two of another game on one of a few Amico systems set up there, clues to another location tied to the game they just played.  Families are working co-operatively to solve puzzles, playing Amico, you're getting their emails/phone numbers for future marketing, they're getting major exposure to this fun little system that has them playing together to solve something.
  • Do you have a team cooking game planned?  Set up a kitchen and assign everyone tasks but give them wacky tools to perform it.  The whole task of cooking a meal together becomes an exercise in absurdity.. the salad station only has unusable tools like a giant Gallagher mallet, a Play-doh press.. the omelette station has a softball automated pitcher that launches thirty eggs a minute and they have to catch them.  Dessert station has a confectionery sugar drop that plops way too much sugar on the cakes.. fastest team to complete a multi-course meal wins.  The whole thing is like a traveling Nickelodeon game show.  Did I mention matching sweaters?
