Intellivision Amico - Tommy Tallarico introduction + Q&A

The Missile Command video that released yesterday, was that sent out via email?  I'm on the mailing list but didn't receive it.  Nothing was in the inbox or junk.  So I guess this video wasn't going to be an email.

I did not get anything either aside from the Youtube notification email.

Speaking of Missile Command, has anyone else actually encountered a game where it is hard to aim due to the controller? I find it extremely difficult to make extremely precise shots in Worms WMD on PC and it's really annoying. I wonder how well the aiming would work in comparison if it was ported to Amico.

People's arguments to the Amico:

That thing will only sell one tenth of the wii...

(Ok so you're saying it'll be a smashing success)

It's like the wii and I see them all over the flea markets....

(Cool so it 14 years we will all be running to the flea markets to pick up old Amicos to hack...I mean to preserve gaming history 😉)

The graphics are like phone games....

( awesome..the best addition of Disgaea 1 Complete is actually the mobile version)

It's nothing like my precious Nintendo product...

(Great so i will be ok to buy both and not worry that I'm duplicating my purchases)

There are SO MANY warning signs that your life will end if you even talk about a product in this forum....

(So why did you say you bought one agian? 🤔)

Lol

I'm just playing with people.

Dont take it so seriously.

😄

I apologize in advance because I don't want to sound like a hater, but I'm very disappointed with the new video.

Firstly, the person who appears on the video is a Tommy Tallarico, when we've seen other companies use a Shigeru Miyamoto for that. Shigeru Miyamoto created the Zelda and Mario games, by the way. This doesn't look good for Amico.

Then the camera focuses on the couch. Not a very expensive couch, I've seen better. And what do we see? Tommy, as Sade said in a song, I'm "By Your Side", baby, but these are not the most attractive people in the world. Now check out the trailer for Super Nintendo World and compare with the young people there. Where are the handsome 20 year olds who play the Amico? Show us. This doesn't look good.

And then we see the game. A very old game about missiles and war. Now check out the graphics and compare them to the ones in Halo, released in 2001. The Amico can't do explosions like that and can't even 3D. Are you selling the system to uneducated people with a two-dimensional mentality?

Please Don't Get Me Wrong, I will definitely buy the Amico because I like to collects objects I dislike and because this also gives me a free pass to write 40 line posts about how much they miss the mark. I just want the best for you, Tommy. XOXO.

--------

Now seriously, Missile Command looks great, Tommy. Thank you for giving these games a new life, many of us never played them as kids and now with up to 8 players they look really fun. This video really shows that the Amico is real and is coming soon. And, regardless of sales figures, it will be awesome to play.

when people say that atariage is full of people who worship amico/tommy youre now top of the list. yes i speak in absolutes but you have done nothing but condescendingly mock the statements i make because you disagree with them. note how i do not target anyone in particular in here and am speaking in blanket terms that apply to the idea not anyones beliefs and then you turn around and make a post targeting me and think you are being sly by mocking my argument or tone. you think that because i dislike the idea and the new video was not my cup of tea and i state it its then okay to go around and mock my statements and think this is hilarious or clever at all. you're not smarter than a hater because you can use better words or act smug in your response.

ive personally noted how civil everyone has been in here regardless of how harsh i come off, except for you. you are a shining example of someone who cant be talked to about anything beyond pure positive notions or else this is what someone can hope to get. a torn apart version of their argument thrown back at them for ridiculing purposes.

There was a comment made in one of the videos where Tommy is talking about the size of the video game market, and if Amico could capture just 1% of that, he'd be ecstatic because it would be an amazing success.

This reminded me of a comment made years ago by another CEO before launching a new product. Steve Jobs looked at the mobile phone industry and said that if Apple could just capture 1% of the market, it would be a huge win. There was a lot of doubt at the time that the iPhone would succeed. Apple was not a phone company. Motorola and Nokia were going to dominate them because they knew how to make great phones. The iPhone did not have a physical keyboard, so who would want one? The wireless carriers certainly didn't. Verizon shot it down. All the big carriers shot it down. The only one that signed on was Cingular. Now here we are years later, and Apple sells $56 billion worth of iPhones every three months.

Am I saying that Amico is going to be as big a success as the iPhone? No. But you never know. I don't think you can shoot down a product this early on because it doesn't fit the business model of the established industry.

I agree if anything it gives the people who are against the Amico more validation like Pat and Ian when they talk about people on atariage being a bunch of yes-men. It's all right to have critical opinions it helps things get better A lot of people don't understand that, they think you're a "hater" there's that word again, just because you're not fully positive all the time it's pathetic and everybody knows in business if you're surrounded by yes-men you fail.

wii sports came with the wii it was just an accessory to get you into the wii and to understanding the motion controls and then you move on. wii sports is one of the best selling games on a console because it came with the wii. no one wants a wii anymore. there are millions for sale in flea markets, second hand markets, ebay. you can barely give them away. people look back on it as something of a gimmick now. some nursing homes got in on the hype and some still use it yes but thats it. i like the idea and the console. but i am not seeing this market you talk about. the reason why they do not make these games their core focus is because it doesnt sell. old people are not looking for a family fun console.

This statement confuses me because I feel like I am all those things you said don't exist.
- I have a wii and the kids use it every week to play motion control games on it (Wii Sports, Just Dance, etc).

- I consistently see Wii's listed for sale on Facebook and Craigslist in the $150 range with just a couple games included.  To me, that isn't "can't barely give it away" prices.

- I don't think of it as a gimmick.  I don't have an XBox of any incarnation but was considering getting a used 360 with Kinect purely for the motion games (and that is even more of a gimmick).

- My brother's family has an XBox 360 and One but no Wii.  When they come over, the kids all play Wii games together and his daughter was asking for a Wii for Christmas this past year (she didn't get one partly because they were worried the XBox One wouldn't get enough use anymore to justify the original purchase).

- I wouldn't consider myself as included in the "old people" category (I'm 39) and the Amico really speaks to me.  I feel like I am its market (or rather, people like me - although it would be pretty cool to have a whole system solely targeted at me alone 😄).

Perhaps I am part of a very small niche market but it certainly doesn't feel that way given the comments I've seen here, on the Facebook page, and on the YouTube comments.

Very true. I’m all in 100% and love it all, but it is important to hear all sides both positive and negative. It’s similar to being in love with a stock. It can get you in trouble. I’ll admit that I just love everything about the Amico and am not critical so it’s important to pay attention to all of the reasonable comments and concerns being put forward. That makes a better product in the end.

When comparing the price of $249 with other console prices such as the switch, it’s rarely taken into consideration that you will be getting 2 controllers and 6 games with the system. This means you do not need to spend any extra money on games when you buy the console. This is an important message to get across in the marketing plan. They could have put the price lower with one controller and no games but it’s sold as a complete package which is nice and people need to know this.

I totally agree.

It's tough because Rayken also made a good point in that the controllers will not make an unfun game fun. But it isn't like Tommy doesn't already know this. He isn't going to release an unfun game just because it uses the controller.

A better argument could be made that if a game is good, the controller it uses won't matter.

It's very tough in here because of Pat and Ian. So I think we may be a little over sensitive.

We have people who are full blown haters who attack the idea and say it will fail, or hope it fails.

We have people who sit in the middle but are also sometimes a little sarcastic like ColecoJoe and MrBeefy. They seem to be on both sides of the coin, and that's okay.

Then we have people who are full blown lovers who praise the idea no matter what and only want it to succeed. Like me :)

And then the fourth group, the lover-haters, who love the idea and praise the idea and go out of their way to make fun of people who may sit in the middle like Rayken.

We have too many different types of trolls, lovers, haters, etc. It's exhausting and I don't know how Tommy has the energy for all of us.

True, but have you tried playing Load Runner on mobile?  That is a great game, unplayable due solely to the controller (which is a huge problem with many of the mobile games).  Do I have concerns playing Load Runner on Amico? Not a one.

We will hear about the pack in games today right ? All except the 6th one ?

I think so.  I'm hoping there's a video but it may just be an email.  But I'll take either one.  I thought Tommy said all 6 games will be shown.

Is there an actual ETA for this announcement? If it doesn't show up before 0200 (17 minutes from now) I'm going to sleep. Good thing my CEO told me not to come to work tomorrow because the governor of Tokyo has politely asked us to not go anywhere if possible this weekend.

Actually, I guess that's technically today and not tomorrow, but whatever.

Not sure what the ETA is.  Hopefully soon though.

I don’t know. I think you have the superfans of various brands/ consoles on every section of the AA forum who are generally critical of people who come into their forum from outside and criticize it. The odd, odd case of one of these brands making a new console is lots of people come in to this brands forum and get really condescending about said brand and brand superfans  jump on them like everywhere and foreign parties don’t understand why it’s not okay to call the superfans’s brand crap.

You know what? Even if I was to go to sleep, I use my Vita as an alarm clock and the stupid blue light will start flashing/glowing if I get an email, so there is a good chance that it will wake me up even if I do go to sleep. Might as well subject my sleepy eyes and brain to blue light and add to the insomnia that I already have by reading the email or whatever in that case. In case you've never seen the Vita's incredibly beautiful OLED screen, it's blinding at the lowest brightness setting so I'll also lose my night vision and I have to tilt it almost 90 degrees away from my face to avoid becoming blinded by it as I read my email. Even better!

I don't know whitch game exactly you are talking about on mobile.

What I hope for Amico it's a game like the classics one. A character as small as the one in skiing. ( Animation was great on skiing ).

I don't want a lode runner Legacy like the switch. Please. 🙏
