Intellivision Amico - Tommy Tallarico introduction + Q&A

So, working through my list of past topics, bringing subscriptions back up.

What is it with millennials not wanting to own things outright?

Guess i don't really care as long as standard purchases remain an option.

I think part of it is that subscriptions weren't so typical for us. Yeah a subscription to a magazine or comic, but those were physical and in a lot of ways not as convenient. Younger generations have had more options. Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, etc. are all things that people have been use to. Do people even remember you could get DVDs from blockbuster or Netflix for awhile?

I think they are too young to have something they paid a lot of money for bricked by the company ending service of something they thought was permanent. When they realize they’ve lost like $500 or so in value due to end of service, they may pay the idea of virtual ownership more attention.

Well and how many here had a summer job or something and worked hard to save up for that one game or whatever? It's something you don't hear younger ones talk about anymore. So I don't think physical is appreciated as much.

It's not as good as yours. I can tell you that.

I am looking VERY much AmicoSanta right now.

Normally when spring hits I get a beezer and do that several times all spring summer so I look quite suave.  LOL.

Since we can't go to any barbers right now... I am Santa all over again and I thought I just finished all my winter Santa work.

Guess not.

Yea, and with that the sense of accomplishment (and reward) that go with it.

Think this is over-simplifying things quite a bit, and its making some pretty broad correlations, but when able, i’d always rather buy over lease, and really do think (in broad strokes and from my perception) that is a generational thing.

As long as we all get to play the games, thats all that really matters to me!

Agreed, and thanks for the reminder!

I forgot to bring up in my prior response to todays videos, i really appreciate the non-play graphics and polish that looks to be going into the game. Its that sort of stuff that heightens the experience and exudes quality.  Great job IE!

One thing I'd like to point out about Nintendo (besides the fact that I think they are great and seemed to be killing it on the Switch) is this:

They used to come out with two systems (a home console and a portable system) pretty close to each other or overlapping in some way.

If you add the totals from NES through Gamecube their sales went down generation over generation. Then the wii/ds blow up and were huge successes (an anomaly). Then the wii u and 3ds did less (the trend of going down returned) and now the Switch is by itself so those numbers would have to do better than wii u AND 3ds.  It could happen but it hasn't yet.

This is actually a really good point that I don't think a lot (and I certainly didn't) of people ever took into consideration when looking at the success of the Switch. If you view it as both the successor to the Wii U AND the 3DS... then it's actually a little disappointing.

And yes, John Alvarado is pretty incredible.  Though I'd consider myself more a David Perry fan myself.  Maybe he can join in on some of these videos.

Just added a bunch of reveal trailer links in the other thread. It was fun going back to watch some of those earlier videos.

Noticed how the ships in Astrosmash have changed. The color updates were good.

Missile Command looks good so far, but the framerate seems unstable. It's still in development, so hopefully it gets optimized prior to launch. I don't really care about framerates as long as they are stable. I mentioned elsewhere that 20 FPS Peace Walker is just fine since it stays there and doesn't move unless something that really starts to tax the PSP happens.

I think they've been "trained" to think of services first.

The company's make more money milking subscriptions and season passes.

People now think its normal.

One more thing we aren't considering about subscriptions...

Someone said they loose the games, movies or shows when the subscription runs out....

That's not the way these kids think.

They say they have a hundred ways to get ANY current or previous game, movie or show for free.

Somewhere in that internet.

Not MY kids but others...but not my kids....

Also consider the type of games being made.  A lot of them are play through once and never again experiences.  So why own it?  Consume it and move on to the next.

I can get that I guess for the long play through PS type games, but a subscription for chess (or mario kart)?  Just doesn't make sense as a consumer, at least to me.

As for Nintendo's 51 casual games announcement from earlier... it's missing the whole point.  Nintendo has tried this route before. PlayStation has tried to put out their casual/party games.  The problem for these companies is that the idea of family fun is just a side thought. It's something they toss out for a few minutes in a presentation, maybe put out a couple of games, then they quickly focus all their efforts on the bread n' butter "hardcore gamers."  Try as they like, they can not break into this market because they have to keep their core customers happy. If it's ever seen that they're putting too much attention into casual fun, they'll ignore it until it dies (for Sony, see WonderBook or PlayLink). Intellivision is approaching this from the opposite direction.  Make those games the core focus and not just a side project.

I love everything I've seen from Amico so far.  October can't come soon enough. I know that now there is zero marketing dollars being spent, and I can't wait to see what happens when they really start putting their full effort into it.

its like you guys are actually ignoring all possible warning signs. nintendo did this its called the wii. when you look back on the wii all you think of is wii sports. as a hardcore gamer you may look back on it as skyward sword and mario. wii sports came with the wii it was just an accessory to get you into the wii and to understanding the motion controls and then you move on. wii sports is one of the best selling games on a console because it came with the wii. no one wants a wii anymore. there are millions for sale in flea markets, second hand markets, ebay. you can barely give them away. people look back on it as something of a gimmick now. some nursing homes got in on the hype and some still use it yes but thats it. i like the idea and the console. but i am not seeing this market you talk about. the reason why they do not make these games their core focus is because it doesnt sell. old people are not looking for a family fun console.

tommys 5 pack in games are going to be the amicos wii sports. they are crucial but also can they even be the wii sports 2? and again wii exploded because families were playing wii bowling. no one is playing wii blowing anymore or even looking for another wii bowling. it came and went. i dont know if im going to get thru to anyone on this board.

i mean its obviously not the same. amico has some definitely cooler games. but yeah when these are the type of game that amico devs are making... it isn't tough for someone like nintendo to quickly make short work of neutralizing that competition. because they're literally nintendo. that name recognition and the respect that the switch has earned with big name titles like mario and zelda. they did it with wii sports again. amico wouldnt even be on the table. tommy mentions wii constantly in his marketing and interviews.

im going to lay some truths before i go because no one is actually interested in listening at this point and i cant fault tommy for defending his brand. tommy is a good guy and all he wants is what is best for his system and i will support him but these are the realities and all the talk about this controller.

inty/tommy could have launched the software service, making sure all the games will work well with that controller, silently developing and testing them with the controller, and then eventually launch the controller after the service is successful. but without the software, the controller is nothing. the controller isn't going to make an unfun game fun, so the games need to prove themselves first before justifying a physical product launch which is much more expensive, and limits your market way too early on

but i get it that it doesn't make sense with the audience they are going for

tommy wants this to be something physical that a casual user can pick up at a store and just take home. but i just dont think that can work with anything that isn't cheap like a retro clone console because nintendo already does that shit anyway

https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/video-games/older-people-are-embracing-video-games-some-stardom-n1047906

they could still do it if they drop the expensive hardware and go with cheap hardware that is easy to pick up on a budget or software that works on a different console, smart TV "channels", Rokus or just ios/android like ive mentioned already. i was 100% on board when the console was around $200 or under $200. i am still on board but i am not lying, $250 is quite the price hike.

which the possibility to launch a controller and console later after they have a following and some really good games under their belt... under their belt... (wtf does that phrase actually imply... food apparently saying for fat people or something.) its a bummer though because the controllers are pretty cool.

but yeah im going to clock out. you guys are hardcore fans and will remain hardcore until it launches and i applaud that. when the amico launches i am still buying a console to support tommy because hes an industry vet who deserves support (been to several video games lives) but i am also not going to beat around the bush anymore.

youll still see me trolling haters on youtube comments and attacking people who talk shit just to wish failure on things.

I have a high score related question for Tommy after watching his interview with Pete. If you bring your controller to a friends and tap it on their machine, play some games  and record some high scores, will those scores be saved and be on your  machine when you get home ? I am quite sure that was a run on sentence ! Lol
