Tempest is going to be interesting. For me, that is a game that has never (that I’ve seen at least) translated well to home consoles because of the lack of spinner controller.

Lode Runner is one of my all-time favorite games from my Apple ][e days. Wasn’t so thrilled with the re-imagined version on the Xbox some years back. This is a case where I completely get updating a game on any given platform, but would love to have the original as a bonus along with it.

Archon will be an instant buy. Another great memory from my Apple days.

And then there’s Miner 2049er. Another day-one buy for me. I remember Electronic Games magazine where there were two-page spreads for this game and it came out on just about every system that was on the market. (Apparently not Intellivision though?) This was originally going to be the first game I bought for my Apple, but the store didn’t have it. Came home with Donkey Kong by Atarisoft instead.

Does the Amico disc on the controller register when you spin it? Or do you have to push down as well to get it to work? If you could spin the disc for Tempest that would be amazing. If not, I guess you could always use your thumb on the screen to rotate around.

Great question. No idea. I’m guessing the team has thought this one through a lot. (Or will if they haven’t started work on it.)

I’m kind of assuming, given the controller, this will be the best implementation of Tempest we’ve seen.

It’s safe to say there’s pressure to get every game right, but Tempest is one that if the controls aren’t just right, the fun of playing it drops to just about zilch and becomes one of those games that’s the first to go if storage is getting tight on the console.

This was discussed a few pages back.  The disc needs to be pushed down at it's edge and touch the contacts to register anything.  On my computer I play Tempest with keyboard buttons for cw and ccw.  They'll have to figure out what works best for the amico controller.  Could be the disc or could be the touchscreen.

They did make Miner 2049er for the Intellivision in 2018.

My buddy Curtis, who is a set painter on Brooklyn 99 and worked on many other TV shows such as Parks and Recreation designed the levels for the original games in the 80's and the all new levels for this version. He works on the CBS lot in Studio city CA. now.

I always loved playing Miner!😃

Regarding the Switch Clubhouse Games vs an Amico:  It's all about the controller.  Other systems can have the similar games, but without the Amico controller, the experience will be different and the games themselves will be different because they are not designed around it.  Intellivision Football simply could not be as deep or complex without the unique features of the original Intellivision controller.

Very cool!

I wonder why Intellivision didn’t get a version back in the day. So often, games might only come out on a few systems. But a game like Miner 2049er was rare because it came out on so many systems.

That's a great question.

I will find out if Curtis has an answer for that.

He was pretty good friends with Bill Hogue,I believe they are still in touch.

Hes gotta know the answer!

We haven't yet seen Yars Revenge or Adventure.  Centipede has been mentioned in an interview and it should be in development.  Then there's a title like Night Driver where we are unlikely to see a first person driving game on Amico.

There you go again!

Just ruining a perfectly good joke with the facts. I can't get a laugh at all with you around.😤

As was mentioned in regards to Tempest, I'm curious how it will work as well. This had just come up  yesterday.  Some suggest a spinner on the disk but as it was brought out it doesn't work by spinning it. So then the idea came up that a spinner type of attachment could be mounted to the touchscreen.  Which could work.

But I also thought just the touchscreen could work by moving your finger back and forth across the touchscreen.

Lastly I had thought what if there was a addon that snaps to the controller amd connects to the usb c and had a spinner not likely but having a usb c did make me think there could easily be different options added later. But then again I could be wrong and that port might not allow that.

Speaking of Farrah...

QUESTION!  How many folks here had THIS poster at one point!

I also had the Catherine Bach / Daisy Duke and Heather Thomas.

I did! On the backside of my bedroom door! Mom hated it! Dad gave it the thumbs up! LOL

This is no afterthought for Nintendo. You can tell from the videos they put a lot of time and polish into this game. And they are really pushing it. They have posted several trailers and videos. It even was the focus of the latest Nintendo Minute. I really think this will be a huge hit for Nintendo.

I'm a huge Nintendo fan and a proud Amico Founder's Edition pre-orderer. I pre-ordered Clubhouse Games on day one and the Amico on day one. I love the Switch and I'm sure I am going to love the Amico based on everything I have seen.

Plenty of room in the video game world for both of these systems. No one needs to tear down the Switch to justify the Amico. The Amico can stand on its own just fine. And I look forward to it as my most anticipated hardware of 2020.

I think there may be a bit of confusion and I believe you're taking the comment too literally and out of context.

It's the concept and idea behind that kind of hyper-casual experience that he was talking about (and what I agreed with).  @RetroAdvisoryBoard correct me if I'm wrong, but that's how I read your comment.  You were merely stating that one hyper casual experience is not the same as an entire console that focuses almost every game on those kinds of experiences (as well as gamer experiences as well).

Hyper-casual is an after thought for Nintendo.  That's not saying anything bad against them... it's just a fact.  I really wish folks would stop trying create drama around this.  I started by saying I think the game is cool and has lots of value.  I praised it.  Then gave my opinion on why I'm not "concerned" about it.  How is that tearing down Nintendo or the Switch in any way??

I didn't see me or RetroAdvisoryBoard tear down the Switch in this argument.  I'm curious to know if you felt differently... and why you felt that way.

Thanks!

It must be pushed down to engage.  But doing "spinning" type things could easily be accomplished on the touchscreen if we wanted.

Hey Tommy, I found something that might interest you.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AirConsole

https://www.airconsole.com/

It seems to provide and promise similar games like the Amico (but obviously isn't 😄). I don't know. Take a look if you will?

Yep.  I subscribed and played it for 3 months about a year ago and then canceled my subscription.  I'm a fan of the concept (obviously), but I wasn't a fan of 95% of the games.  Not much depth and felt very slapped together.  I have heard that the games are getting better though so I should check it out again.  I also want to make sure it doesn't sound like I'm slagging it off.  I'm not.  People should check it out for themselves (I think they may even give a free trial period?).  I'm just giving my personal opinion.

My experience with the phone as controller was very laggy and has the same issue with no buttons or tactile controls for a system that relies a lot on arcade style games.

Our attachable buttons with our mobile controllers are a step up... but I've always said (and will continue to say) that the Amico action games are BEST played with the real controllers.  HANDS DOWN.  Adding up to 8 devices is great for our more simple party style games, card, dice, board games, etc., but isn't going to be the way you want to play Night Stalker, Moon Patrol, Astrosmash or any of our motion control games.

Has anyone else here played AirConsole?  Would be interested in hearing your feedback.

Maybe we have our thoughts crossed a bit. I thought the comment about an afterthought was referring to Clubhouse Games. My point was that Nintendo isn't treating that game as an afterthought. The game looks amazing to me.

If we are talking about hyper casual games being an afterthought on the Switch, then yeah, I agree. But I didn't buy a Switch to play those kinds of games. I'm buying an Amico to play those kinds of games. Same way in that I am not buying an Amico for a Zelda-like experience. I can do that on the Switch.

My point about tearing down the Switch may have sounded too harsh. My point was, the Amico is its own thing. Filling a niche the other three systems don't do. I don't need to compare Clubhouse to any games on the Amico. I just don't see the comparison. For $40, Clubhouse games is going to provide a lot of hours of fun with a variety of games. I'm not expecting that on the Amico. I am expecting smaller fun game experiences for a lot less money. And that is exactly what I want from the Amico.

Sooo basically its a cellphone playing games and mirroring it on a tv.  I think its a cool idea and some of the games look good. But I cant say much more than that. Im also not crazy about using cellphones to store and manage games. I use my phone alot and storing large files just eats up memory. I tried playing fortnite on my phone and it worked. Bit good lord it took alot of memory.  And I've been in situations where I wanted to film something cool and was limited because of those damn games. So now I only have breakout on my phone. I know I should delete some stuff but I dont like these games eating up a bunch of memory. This airconsole lol I can just imagine my phones memory gone. I have several handhelds systems I'll just use those. No I want my experience to be on a dedicated console not some setup that trys to cheat by using your phone as a console.  Rant over lol

Yeah, you pay like $100 to get an extra 32MB-64MB of storage on your phone and it's not easily upgradable. There are a lot better ways to store games, which makes me wonder why people see loading up your phone with games as a better alternative to the Amico. And the phones where never designed for gaming. The best phone games shoe-horn their style to the phone, so trying play those games directly on a TV is where devices like the airbox and even the Ouya failed.

Well, this is interesting. Never heard of it. Seems it was made by a company called N-Dream, which is a bit too close to N-Gage for my liking.
