Intellivision Amico - Tommy Tallarico introduction + Q&A

When I was about 14-16 years old, my mom genuinely bought a light pink sweater for me. When I gently refused to even wear it once, she argued that the sweater was not pink: she said it was "salmon".

With my family and my wifes family mostly growing up in the 70s, it funny when we show the younger family members these days pictures from back then.  Usually we get the look and snickers and we have to explain, Yes, we all wore plaid, Yes, we all had long straggly hair, yes all white families looked like white trash back in the day.  It was the look.  LOL

True but the family will have already had to buy the system for this to happen.  If the Amico is labeled and dismissed as a flashback console that will suck, but I think it will also suck if it gets labeled a " Fischer Price baby console" as well. As they say,

it will be how the Amico responds , counter punches, and ropeadopes that will likely decide its fate. I like their chances

It definitely won't be marketed as a kid only Fisher-Price type device so we won't have that issue.  Totally agree with the "flashback" or "retro" comment.  We already see that now!  2 years after we've announced.  It's a HUGE priority in our marketing plan.  We are very aware.  And although I've talked about this before... a HUGE reason why we refuse to include original Intellivision games on the system during our first year or so.  Same with pixel art graphics.  Those can stay on the Switch and Steam.  No interest to potentially confuse our audience.

And because today is the anniversary of Ali's death... I'm gonna substitute your pic.

:)

For sure! And I’ll be honest... I do have some concerns about Amico making it. Not because of things they have/haven’t done so far, but because of all the variables that have to line up for just about any product to succeed. I’m not as concerned about the Flashback or Fisher Price type of comparison. I think that would be easily corrected if it came up. (And that will likely play, partially, into the box art which will be fascinating when we finally see it.)

Overall, I like their chances, too. The benefit of Tommy being so open is that we see some of thinking in this process. Not having launched a product like this myself, I can only say it appears to me, with my limited knowledge, that they’re doing the right things.

But the landmines they have to avoid now (and after system launch) to be successful would give me nightmares. This is where I think Allard brings great things to the table with his experience with “console landmines”.

HAHAH  I love the plaid couch too,  I bust on my MOM about ours til this very day.  I ask her " What the hell, how much plaid did you people need?"

Plaid & woograin!  The fuel for style in the 70's!

Totally!

You nailed it!

Especially about J.

Folks who say it's too late for J to make a difference are folks who literally have ZERO knowledge of what the hell they're talking about.

Big surprises?   For hardware... I'd say there are 3 pretty significant ones that will be revealed over the summer (and that doesn't include the family thing I was talking about above).

My initial guesses are as follows -

1)Abandoning your current architecture.

2)You are going to a more powerful Ryzen chip. My guess - A Threadripper.  Liquid cooled of course.

3)This has caused a slight delay in shipping, but don't worry kick starters will get it first.

4)Because you over deliver -  And with your earlier answer  - Since the USB-C is data and power... You will be offering an eGPU with Dual RTX-2080's. So we get ray traced Farkle and Cornhole.  - IN 4K!

5)Price may go up slightly.

I may be confusing some of this with another retro game system coming out. Hey they offer two controllers too. For $389.00!!! Plus you get ZERO games with it.  - Not hating. I really want both to succeed.

Which probably makes sense as to why the big announcement came in a Japan only magazine.

I find it super interesting though that the entire industry and hardcores were hoping so much that Sega was going to do another console.  Why?  I read many user comments and industry takes.  The reason:  Because they were nostalgic for older and simpler games and setups.  Because platforms like Genesis & Saturn were easily playable with friends.

Hmmm??   Isn't that interesting.

😁

That’s super interesting and makes sense. If SEGA did announce a console, it would most definitely have an ”older and simpler game vibe”. They would not have the money or resources to compete with Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony who create High budget games. They would have no choice to keep it simple and focus on a different market segment. I think

I heard some company is doing that as we speak 😜

You gotta do it, throw a Pi in there and then make a video.  You'd get a million views!

I've started and did a couple of quick videos already.  Planning on building about 4 of them in different colors.  Might even do a give away lol

100% correct.  These people lack any real understanding.  Love the one guy on YouTube constantly saying hes just a concerned consumer.  Lol Im sure you are buddy ha ha ha

The one thing all this 2020 madness has done ( virus, job loses, rioting) is that it has  really made the Intellivision brand a much more valuable asset. I mean in times like this the normal human reaction is to look back at simpler, safer times and find comfort there, and that falls right into the Intellivision brands wheel house.

Speaking of Atari, it looks like they're going to finally start shipping the VCS.  At least 500 of them.  By mid-June, they claim.  I'm sure they'll deliver it this time.

Hey guys, I've been reading this awesome Atari Age topic for a few days and I figured out I could share it with the people on this thread:

The Jaguar is FAR from the best console..

Don't be misguided by the title: I'm learning a lot of cool stuff about the Jaguar and the 5th gen consoles. For example, I learned that the guys who made Rollcage are the same team that created the infamous Cybermorph for the Jaguar. I also learned that people are actually paying hundreds of dollars to get rid of the N64 anti aliasing in 2020.

The general consensus is that the old times where each console had different architectures and games were better times. I hope the Amico can bring back some of that glory!

Haha!

Lets all click on it a few times so it goes over 100K!    :)

WAIT A SEC?!?!?!

100K views but only 235 dislikes??

Hmm... lets do some math...

Lets see.... that's...

.2%

So 1/4th of 1 percent.

Isn't That Something?

:D :D :D

500? Are they making them in a garage?   They should park the car in the street and double the production facility size

I have a question. If I watch this video  100 times on my YouTube account, does it count as 100 views or are the views counted by unique users ? I’m assuming it would count as 100 views but I’m not entirely sure.

I love the screen grab there, Im a sucker for that art design style.. anyway my point of commenting, I dont know if many of you have played the new Maneater game where you are a shark eating everything.  Its fairly well done except... they managed to make controlling the damn shark complicated.  /Puts on old guy ranting at the controller hat.... I mean all that was needed was swim, jump, bite  etc, a few easy buttons... well they managed to make it complicated with  tail whips, double jumps, jump tail whips, it looks as though the basically just made stuff up in order to fill every button, no matter that it adds nothing to the game.  ugh..  /Take hat off...  40 bucks and Im not sure how often I'll play it due to the whole " now what button does what again? effect"  ..

ps. I guess a lot of this design over complications comes from the fact that these developers rarely have anyone middle aged or older on staff.

Not sure how YouTube tracks views but I have watched the video using multiple browers, multiple computers, via my cellphone (not on wifi) and via my VPN on my tablet using a VPN location I have never used before and the YouTube Count has stayed exactly the same over the last half hour or so. I tried Tommy!

I also tried something, a small video with only 7 views in 1 month. But the count stayed the same !

Maybe it's not in realtime. I will take a look tomorrow if it's now 8 views or more. (Because I looked at it 3 times).
