Intellivision Amico - Tommy Tallarico introduction + Q&A

Intellivision has been on Fig.co (and now Republic) since the Spring, in fact I have done two updates about 3 months apart here explaining the growth of the investment dollars on that site. In addition, Intellivision has been fund raising on a regular basis with larger investors, most recently meeting with some in Monaco. I look at money being raised in just the opposite way. Every dollar raised is a new staff person to do QA or a new license property for a game or a new developer hired to help fill the game pipeline for 2022. Remember IE is just about to move into their new 15,000 square foot headquarters and just opened an office in Reno. They wouldn't be doing that if they didn't have production money allocated. IE isn't just Tommy, people like Phil Adam, Jason Enos & David Perry are there to make sure the money & production are lined up.

I fully expect to see Intellivision continue to raise money after the Amico launches in order to expand sales regions, distribution channels and ramp production. For me this is standard startup procedure from seed funding to Round A, B and so forth.

Cool, I wasn't aware they'd been on FIG (obviously). Sounds less like new news, then.

It looks like the PS5 is absolutely destroying the opposition from what I'm reading. The console came out today in Europe and people are going crazy to get one, with forum threads getting dozens of pages in a couple of hours from Sony fans sharing URLs to preorder the machine.

The graphics of both new consoles appear to be mostly on par, with a slight advantage for the PS5 for some reason. The XSX is technically superior, but perhaps the need to release the games for the XSS is dragging the graphical evolution. PS5 will probably get more games, which means developers will become more expert on it, while XSX will slowly release better looking games that will take advantage of the extra teraflops.

With the graphics of both having the same detail and resolution only differing in framerates, the differentiating factor is the controller. Sony has done a good job here at offering all the benefits from the well-known design while adding some cool features that are managing to impress people and add to the immersion.

In only 5 months, the Amico fans will be able to live these emotions, replacing the graphical realism with the multiplayer experiences, but with a similar focus on the unique controller that, in this case, is different to every other controller while sharing a few things with some.

In what I see as a clear win-win situation, people will simply buy and enjoy their Amicos if there is enough stock, and will be able to feel happy for Intellivision Entertainment if the machine sells out like the PS5/XSX. Most of the hardcore gamers who post in forums and want an Amico have probably pre-ordered one at this point, so we'll see how the console is received by casuals across the world (and perhaps some hardcore gamers who will order the machine when it's officially released). Will there be enough units? Will there be too many? Only 2021 has the answer.

This is going to be a fascinating race between Sony & Microsoft this generation. It seems that Sony still has the initial exclusives lead (the reason I would pick PS5 if I had to get one) but Microsoft is clearly gearing up to challenge that with their announcements and, more telling I think, their development house purchases. XSX is more powerful, on paper, but will that potential get realized early enough to sway the majority of buyers? Still predicting a 50% 50% split this gen but I don't have a horse in this race so just my guestimate

I remember back in the PS3 / XBOX 360 / Wii days, there was a website that tracked the console wars. I'm hoping for something similar this time around. 🙂  (Not that we're competing against those consoles, but just as interesting information.)

No horse in this race for me either I didn’t get the 4 cause I didn’t but many games or use the PS3 often but based on recent history I expect Sony to be far more successful than Xbox I’m figuring 55-45 or 60-40 split of the groups

Here in Spain, Sony has won Microsoft in every single generation by a 10 to 1 margin. I know the XSX will do better in the States, but I have the feeling it's going to be the same story over here.

Wow that is fascinating, I had no idea Spain was such a Microsoft hotbed. I remember some numbers out of Germany last gen and they were tracking 4 to 5 ish to 1 PS4 like the US sales number. I just expected the rest of Europe to be clones of those results. Do you know if the games fit the local mentality, it was local pricing, Microsoft Spain is just kicking ass or language support is better on the XBox? Stuff like that always interests me.

Here in Spain we've always liked movies, music and games from the USA. Our love affair with Playstation is probably because of the fact that it offered a friendly brand with a clear image and both American, European and Japanese games from the start; while the message from Microsoft has been perceived as a limited/confusing offering.

Sony projects an image of entertainment and Microsoft an image of "I can buy this".

Microsoft has already said that they won't provide XSX sales figures, so I'm afraid that plan won't be entirely possible.

Yo!,

Here are excerpts from an investment newsletter that came out today reviewing our SEC Regulation A+ offering on Republic.

This is what a review looks like from people who know what they're talking about, do a lot of reserach and do this kind of thing for a living.

I didn't see any mention of "flash looking games" or "who is this for?" or "we haven't seen it being turned on so it must be a scam".

😁🤣

Thought you might all enjoy reading it.

Ever Try Investing in a Company's Future Sales?

A new video game console for the whole family.

https%3A%2F%2Fbucketeer-e05bbc84-baa3-43

Company [product] Bio

To be clear, you’re not investing in the company Intellivision — which has been an OG game maker since the late 70’s, previously owned by Mattel, before a group of the original employees bought the brand back. To put this in context for those of you reading this that haven’t experienced a receding hairline yet; before PS5 vs XBOX, it was Intellivision vs Atari. Intellivision is the manufacturer of a brand new gaming console called Amico (this is what you’re investing in — well, more specifically, it’s sales). Amico redefines video game entertainment for family and friends by simplifying the entire experience with a safe, affordable, and easy-to-use platform.

Amico’s CEO Tommy Tallarico calls it, “the Disneyland of gaming consoles”. And, while I have not played it yet — the sentiment resonates. Fun fact: I used to be rather lethal at Call of Duty. Then, I got older, my reflexes slowed and I began to get destroyed by tweens and I retired (broke 🤬) my controller. So, the idea of a simpler gaming experience designed around family fun vs fast-twitch button combos is pretty appealing. Amico is an all-in-one, Nintendo Wii’ish system that allows its owner to pack and play with built-in controllers and optional phone-based controllers that enable up to 8 people to play some seriously retro games that will make Dad’s everywhere feel nostalgic.

Meet the Team

Tommy Tallarico is Intellivision’s CEO. Prior to this, Tommy spent more than 30+ years as a veritable video game industry icon and he’s one of the most successful video game composers of all time. Tommy has earned more than 50 industry awards and holds the Guinness Book World Record for ‘most game titles worked on’ with 300+ games — which sold over 200M+ units, generating $10B+ in revenue.

Okkkk. Tommy is a legend in the space. He has that Billy Mays-type energy (in a good way, lol) you’d expect from a CEO with his pedigree. A true believer in the brand and product. His experience speaks for itself… but, it’s worth mentioning here that when you’re looking at investing in a legacy brand versus a startup, the CEO’s ability to lead and manage global teams is even more important than how they roadmap and sell a vision. Refounding as I like to call it, is like trading for an Ace at the deadline; you’re not paying for potential, you’re paying for experience. That’s Tommy. He’s there for what he knows and who he can recruit to give Intellivision a title shot. To that end, Tommy has assembled a literal “who’s who” of gaming industry leaders.

Traction

  • More than $25,000,000 in purchase orders

  • 100,000 units pre-sold, with global retail distribution

  • Console comes equipped with 2 controllers, 6 games priced at $249

  • Dozens of new games already in development priced at $9.99 per

As far as pre-launch success goes, it couldn't be much better. Breakeven for Amico is 200,000 units and they’re already half way there. I guess this is where the Dream Team comes into play… even if the console were to flop; the names and titles associated with it should be able to push initial sales pretty far — then it’s up to consumer demand. Because if one thing isn’t entirely obvious about retail video game distribution; NOTHING brings people (COVID notwithstanding) to Best Buy and Target like a good game launch! So, if consumers love the system, a $10 price point for new games sets this thing up to become a cash cow for Intellivision (and maybe you and I).

Market Opportunity

Film, TV and music are such dominant cultural forces that we often forget that gaming is the largest industry in the entertainment sector. The gaming industry takes in a whopping $160 billion per year, And the gap between gaming and other entertainment is likely to increase due to the pandemic-induced gaming boom.

Amico isn’t developing a new game or gaming platform, though. Its ambitions are even grander than that. Amico is building an entirely new gaming console, which is a much steeper challenge.

In developing a new console, Amico is competing with Microsoft and Sony, two enormous companies that just released new versions of their Xbox and PlayStation consoles, respectively, and have virtually limitless budgets to market them.

Amico isn’t going after hardcore gamers, though — it fasions itself as a simpler, more family-friendly console. Amico does have nostalgia going for it, though. It has already forged deals to bring back titles from defunct but once-beloved gaming publishers, such as Atari.

More than that, Amico’s central premise is sound — gaming has become too complicated and competitive for the average gamer, and there is room for a more family-centric gaming console, especially with families confined indoors during the pandemic. (To that end, Nintendo has been re-releasing its old consoles, and their signature games, in recent years to cash in on the trend.)

And yet the market for gaming continues to grow. The number of gamers in the U.S. is expected to jump 5% this year, a higher growth rate than the 3.6% increase the industry experienced in 2019. With all this excitement around gaming, it’s entirely plausible that a company could come along and challenge the Microsoft-Nintendo-Sony oligopoly.

Minimum Investment: $1,000

Here's what I like: Always bet on experience, because experience doesn’t leave time on the clock.

To me, investing in legacy brands is sorta my jam. I’ve acquired 3 different existing brands in my career and I do it because the most difficult thing in business is growing a brand that means something to people — the rest is execution. So, when an opportunity to invest in a legacy brand and a team full of stars appears, I perk up. With Amico, the opportunity is pretty simple: a) do you think the world needs another console? b) does nostalgia sell? c) can Amico become the new household board game?

IMO there’s plenty of room for another gaming system, especially if it brings a new value prop to the market. Nostalgia doesn’t need to sell everything, it just needs to give enough people a reason to try it and if the experience resonates — Amico sells itself. And, due to Covid, family time actually means something again (which might just make this whole shitbox of a year worth it). So, I can 100% see a super simple, family-friendly console becoming a huge hit!

Amico goes against all conventional wisdom trying to sell a slower-paced, low-tech, PG-rated gaming system to a world going Mach XII with behemoths like Apple, Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo. That said, 2020 comes with a Covid*, people are doing a lot of old school shit to keep it together. Also, calling Amico low-tech is a tad unfair; it’s just a unique blend of vintage software with high tech hardware.

Who should invest and why: It’s $1,000 minimum, so it’s not a cheap investment by any means… and it doesn’t even come with a free console. But, if you’re a game nerd or see the potential for Amico to sell even a fraction of the units Nintendo has sold with its NES reboot — you’re in the money! If you’re unicorn hunting, this probably isn’t for you. However, if you’d like to augment your income with an investment that (if successful) pays out immediately; this is a great deal.

As always, investing in private companies is super high risk, anything can happen. So, don't invest money you can't afford to turn into confetti... Intellivision has been around a long time, but Amico is new 🤞

Hi Tommy,

I first herd about Amico back in March, I was on YouTube and the first gameplay video of Night Stalker appeared,I was blown away by how good it looked and sounded. I’ve been following OEB Pete and the Amico videos you do with him ever since.

I’ve been playing video games since 1976, and the Amico brings me back to the good old days of gaming but with a modern twist. I hate having to update a game nearly every time I want to play it, paid for loot boxes, don’t get me started on them. I cancelled my PS5 order so I can make sure I can get Amico on launch day. For a guy just over 50 I feel like I’m a kid again at Christmas.

Very cool!!  Thanks for sharing your story.

You're gonna fit it just fine in this forum I think!

Hi Tommy, I’m new here to the site and was wondering if you could answer a few questions, I do apologies if they have been answered before.

1. will there be some sort of gamer profile so you can have a gamer tag?

Yes.  But we don't have online gaming so it's more of just an internal thing for your household, friends and online leaderboards.

I'm not sure.  I'll ask Hans (president of Intellivision Europe) and get back to you.

Eventually.  It's on our "to do" list.  Loved that game.  Super hard though!  Need to make it easier.  :)

4. I think Marble Madness would be a good fit for the Amico, just add more stages as well of the arcade ones, make it 4 player, the screen on the controller could emulate the trackball when you slide your finger over it. Any way just an idea.

Totally agree!!

Fun fact:  The person who created Marble Madness is my buddy Mark Cerny.  Mark is the genius behind the last 3 PlayStation consoles!

Hiya Tommy, I hope all is well in Amico land.

Only 146 more days until tax day 2021 (err, I mean the re-scheduled launch date for Amico).

https://www.livecountdown.com/intellivision-amico-countdown/

Until then, I have a few questions for you which I hope have not been asked until now...

(1) Will there be add-on modules?

Not at launch, but definitely in the future.

14 hours ago, skylinesandsunsets said:

(2) What are the odds that Corona will cause yet another delay?

Hard to say as I have no idea what is going to be thrown at us over the next month or two.  For example, they just made an announcement this week that Orange County, CA is going "purple" and as of next week everyone is in lock-down again.  Watch this TV newscast.  It's not good:  https://losangeles.cbslocal.com/video/4875134-orange-county-moves-back-to-purple-tier-newsom-says-state-hitting-emergency-brake/

Nothing we can do to stop or predict stuff like this.  We were supposed to be moving into our new offices for the crucial finalization on Dec. 1st.  Been prepping the new building since Nov. 1st.  If this lockdown lasts til the end of the year... it could have an effect.  Hard to say at this point, but we are still pushing along as hard as possible.  Every week the challenges with COVID seem to screw us over in some way, shape or form.

We'll know a lot more where we stand by the beginning of the year.

14 hours ago, skylinesandsunsets said:

(3) When can we expect the next big Amico video?

Not sure.  Our brand new in-house video person is moving to Orange County after Thanksgiving and we were going to start setting up his studio on Dec. 1st.  So once again... hard to predict these kinds of questions at this point when everything changes from week to week.

14 hours ago, skylinesandsunsets said:

(4) Will Night Stalker be available on April 3rd? If so then NS will be the first game I'll download into my Founder's Edition.

Only if it's awesome and ready.   :)

Night Stalker & Cloudy Mountain are two of our biggest and most involved games.  I wouldn't put them out at launch if they weren't 100% completed and to our satisfaction.  So I can promise anything at this point until about February.  But worst case scenario is they would be a month or so after launch, so it's not like they will be delayed for a long time... but if any 2 have a chance of delay... it would be those 2.  As of right now... we are still on track for launch.

14 hours ago, skylinesandsunsets said:

Thanks in advance,

Thanks for the questions.  Sorry I didn't have more solid answers at this point.  Hope you understand.

Russell Lieblich!

He was a good friend of mine for many years.  Back in the MIDI days of the early 90's we used to trade horror stories of writing music for games without the proper tech.

:D

I even hired him to do some songs on a project I was working on at Virgin.

Great guy.  The first time I met him I couldn't stop gushing over the fact that he wrote the SNAFU music!

Unfortunately he passed away in 2005 at only 51 years old.
