Intellivision Amico - Tommy Tallarico introduction + Q&A

Yeah, some weeks ago I already suggested a mature version of the console, something called Enemico or Darkmico where split screen games are also possible, a machine where the only commandments were "4 player local multiplayer is required for all games", "all games must be $10 or less" and "no games will have DLC". It was a joke and I know this was not possible, but if this existed I can see thousands of us ordering it just like the FE.

I think 2 consoles would just be too much and divide owners too much to mot be worth it for a small company to do . Or a large company.

Yes, I know it's not possible for commercial reasons. It was just a science fiction scenery.🚀🛰️

Science Fiction is the second best science there is.

Ouch! I thought the S in SAFE was "safe" but it's "simple"... but yeah, the Darkmico/Enemico would not be simple either because of the split screen and FPS games. So it would be MOMAE (Mature Offline Multiplayer Affordable Entertainment).

Hmm, perhaps it's time to move on to other topics... Tommy, if you were the CEO of Sony, Nintendo or Sega, would you free the development tools for 20-30 year old consoles and organize homebrew contests or do you think it would not be beneficial for your company as it would promote playing in machines that you're no longer manufacturing? I don't think this kind of initiatives would be so harmful commercially. After all, hardcore gamers that are planning to buy a PS4/PS5 or the next Switch will not change their minds because there are 5-10 new PS1 titles available. If a physical release is a problem, I would make those games available as digital purchases or I would include them as extras in other games. In the end you would be generating positive news about your company and potentially increasing the brand recognition by paying homage to its legacy.

Hey @Tommy Tallarico,

Any interviews coming out...i'm jonesing for some news!

Had a query about "Temple of Apshai", any chance for a remake of that?

Any chance the next video would feature board games and the dice rolling aspect...my wife was beyond stoked about the idea of Yahtzee as a release :)

Cheers!

Hey Tommy,

Just saw a trailer for a film called "connected". Looks to have a like-minded message to the Amico and the timing is great with a September release date for maybe a pre-movie Ad. Thought I'd put it in your path.

Cheers!

I have so many fond memories from the arcades over the years, that pinpointing a specific moment is near impossible.  There was just something magical about it, the atmosphere, the sounds, the endless possibilities.  For a kid, it also presented a sense of freedom because I remember my mom would drop us off with a bunch of quarters, and for the next few hours my friends and I were just free to do whatever we wanted.  The games looked amazing compared to what we could play at home.  I think this is what is lost on a lot of younger people when looking back at the evolution of gaming consoles.  The 16-bit era was so magical because it really felt like for the first time the games we could play at home were exactly like the ones in the arcade.  Sure, Altered Beast may not be great, but playing it at home on the Genesis, it looked just like the game in the arcade.  It was amazing.

One of my great co-op experiences was in college and my roommates and I had an N64 with just one game: 1080.  We would play that game non-stop, always trying to get the fastest score.  If you were out all day and came back to see someone had beaten you, it was game on.  We probably took it more seriously than we should have.

Tommy, that leads me to a question.  Any chance there will be a master leader board for Amico?  What I'd love to see is when I turn it on, to be able to see the high scores for each game at a glance.  I can imagine turning it on and seeing this thing only to realize my daughter has beaten my high score in Night Stalker (which simply can't stand). So it gives me maybe some motivation to jump into a certain game over another.  Anyway, it's just a thought.

Tommy,

Will there be a drawing/painting type game for Amico?  What about the arcade game Clowns?  It was made by Midway in the 70's.  It's similar to Circus Atari.

I don’t know that game but I loved Circus Atari. A remake would be so cool ! Also classic Tank Battle and possibly air sea battle updated !!

I know this is a selfish request but I want someone to interview Tommy for an hour and have it only be about Amico. Tommy has a wonderful life story and it is interesting to hear about his live shows and how he became President/CEO of Intellivision but I kind of want more Amico information. Of course if the topic veered off into talking about John Alvarado then I'd be ok with that too. 🙂

I'm getting very nervous about the competition for the Amico game BreakOut.  There is a new brick breaker game coming to PS4 AND Vita (cross-buy) call Twin Breaker: A Sacred Symbols Adventure. Its a brick breaker game with a story. My knees can't stop shaking. 😟

Lol 😅

Seriously though I like when old genres come back 😁

I love the idea of a master leaderboard for local high scores ! I love LOCAL high scores. Online leaderboards are cool, but it’s local ones that really get you playing for hours at a time wanting to beat your family and friends !!!!

You need to check out the 7800 Super Circus AtariAge. Great game if you love Circus Atari. Even has bosses.

YES!  I guess I should have emphasized that it should be for local leader boards only.  I don't care if someone 1000 miles away plays like Billy Mitchell that I have no chance of ever beating.  I want to know what the scores are for the people in my house.

Exactly which is why I asked and received the answer that most or all games that are based on high scores will include LOCAL leaderboards where you can enter your name /initials. This is a make or break in how much I will play these type of games where it’s really only the high score that matters. Your idea would take local high score competition to the next level !! I don’t understand the fascination with online leaderboards where you don’t even know the person you are beating. There is no incentive for me to beat Joe’s score who lives in Florida ! But online leaderboards will be there for those who enjoy it.

I don't have too many anecdotes related to the arcades other than remembering the atmosphere, the smell of cigarettes and the magic of looking at at a video game's demo looping over and over (yes, I used to do that as a kid because those were games  I didn't have at home and didn't have the money to play). It's a real tragedy those places disappeared.

But one of your stories remind me of something: check out these suspicious high scores that came by default in the Amstrad CPC awesome version of Contra.

Not sure how captured but you can buy a cart from the AA store right here! I highly recommend it. PMP is a homebrew machine and he has made the 7800 library respectable compared to what it use to be.

Can you post a link to the machine and the games ?

Tommy,

Will there be tax on digital games for Amico?

What other payment methods will be accepted for digital games on Amico besides the RFID card?

Will RFID cards be sold at retail and will there be different increments as well?
