Intellivision Amico - Tommy Tallarico introduction + Q&A

These kids are between the ages of 6 and 12, and I can tell you with certainty that not a one of them would enjoy the vast majority of games on the Amico. They already know what they like, and what they like are fundamentally different from what the Amico offers.

I know my kids will love to play all games that we have seen so far, and to be able to do it TOGETHER with us. And when they are old enough to ask/wish for a Switch or Playstation 5, they are going to get that as well, so whats the problem?? Did you stop playing board games and do other types of family activities in your family when you started playing video games? And when they are older (13-14 yrs) they don’t want to play Fortnight with their mom/dad/grandparents, they want to play that with their friends, and when it’s family night, they will for sure like to play something like skiing or board/dice type of games.

Hi there. I made this account because I'd like to try and address Tommy directly about a few things with the Amico/Intellivision in general, and I noticed he's been posting here a lot, so I figured this would be my best place to do so.

blah, blah, blah

Another armchair "expert" with all the "info" wanting to rumble with the big man based on anecdotes and hardcore gamer opinion. The gamer that thinks the former president of Nintendo is super cool wants a retro console, imagine that. Does he also thinks he's telling Tommy something he and the rest of us haven't heard 50 times before, yet somehow Tommy remains confident. Is that you Sega Snatcher, or just a copycat?

BTW, this guys world seems to be filled with kids who are old enough to playing fortnight, but young enough to have crying temper tantrums when they don't get what they want. Anyone else find this disturbing. Oh, and it's basically the same thing Pat and Ian said in their last PU Podcast about the Amico.

That was a great interview.  Thanks for asking some new questions.  Also, it was neat seeing the different molds of the controller and which one ended up being the final design.

My take on all of this, again, is that people don't understand what Amico is because there has never been anything like it for a really long time (if ever). People get hung up on the retro re-imagined games and think that this is just a retro video gaming console. That's not how I see it, and I'm fairly certain that isn't what it is. It's a new genre of gaming that Nintendo briefly dabbled in with the Wii before they went back to making traditional console video games.

To me, Amico is a system that plays video games that are designed to be played locally, in groups, for a short period of time. The games are designed to be family friendly, but also accessible and entertaining to people of all ages and skill levels. The games are also designed around a unique controller that isn't available anywhere else. That's what the Wii was selling at first, until Nintendo went back to their wheelhouse of Metroid, Zelda, Mario and the like. Amico takes bits and pieces from other gaming genres to create something that is very different.  But people can't understand that because they only compare it to conventional video game ideas that they're familiar with.  Before the iPhone came along, nobody really knew what "mobile gaming" was. It's something very new that can't be done on a console. Likewise, PC games designed for a mouse and keyboard are not compatible with traditional consoles.

There is mobile gaming.

There is PC gaming.

There is console gaming.

And there is Amico gaming.

If you try to squeeze Amico into one of the other categories, the concept doesn't make sense. If you think of it as something completely different, then it all comes into focus.  That's how I see it anyway.

That being said, you look Altar Boy chubby is all.

Exhibit A Why people like the majority of the this threads readers and contributors need to exist,  to combat this type of single minded and hateful spew.   This as got me angry, constructive criticism this is not, nor will it ever be when you have statements like "You come off as... kind of a jerk, Tommy"  or  "You act like you have this enormous ego"   also I assume you talked to every single kid in the world when saying "Kids don't want to play Pong, or Space Invaders, or Galaga, or anything like that. They just don't care about the games of yesteryear. "

You could have worded this so much better than what you did and got a lot more respect from people and most likely got a lot of good answers back, but you took the easy road and went on an attack veiled in a constructive criticism guise.  Man I am not happy now, I need a tea.

Pete says he is not happy what my brain interprets this as: Don’t make me angry. You won’t like me when I’m angry

Have to say, I am in about 20 minutes and so far, out of all the YT videos I have watched, and it is not all of them but many, this is one of the better and finer interviews.  Why you may ask... is you are actually asking some questions that others have not, even though an easy way out is to ask the more common questions.  For some of us we have heard those answers but questions about "what does you wife think about Amico" and the one once Amico is shipping, will Tommy step away from some of these chats and such we are all enjoying here in AA forums.

Well done!

TJ

*Also found out from your interview... I share the same car as @Tommy Tallarico did learning to drive.  A Ford Fairmont Station Wagon!  haha

Games like Moon Patrol & Astrosmash aren't even close to being completed "art-wise" (yet a bunch of folks are really loving the looks already).

My son saw the 'frozen' asteroid placeholder with TEMP written on it. He kept saying 'shoot the temp' one!

Okay, we've gone a step too far when Pete's ticked off. Seriously, this is ridiculous. Now, I'm late to the party, and certainly not going to articulate myself as well (or as amusingly) as those who have posted previously, I feel compelled to say something here.

Internet bullies: it's weird, but I tend to categorize them as candy bars.

They try to come off as Snickers, but end up looking kind of like Milky Way.

Similar candy, with one BIG difference...

Sorry. Promise I won't do that again.

Anyway, a question on Baseball, as it's been too long since I've pestered poor Tommy about it.

I know that these games have been a major investment of time and talents for you. I'm not sure how far the game has come along, but I've been wandering what Baseball on the Amico is going to sound like?

For instance, as cool as hearing the umpire call balls and strikes, will we hear faint crowd noise, perhaps an occasional 'Peanuts! Popcorn!'

Maybe an organ striking up 'Take me out to the Ballgame' as the top of the 7th ends?

Again, my apologies for the one-track mind. Baseball games have just sort of been my go-to for any console. Looking forward to getting my brother and dad over for weekend series!

I'm not exactly sure what Baseball will sound like.  I'm definitely going to use real sounding hits... but will probably mix in a little arcade style as well.

I GOTTA use the "YER OUT!" sound on the logo or whatever... but I also want to get an umpire say "YER OUT!" in roughly the same exact way as the original game did.  I think that would be pretty funny.  :)

It would've been 11, but I was too busy trying making up a joke about the straight boy made up nightmare called fudgepacking. Not my best work. 🤔

Umm...

"Republic CEO Chuck Pettid added that video games was the most requested new area for investment among its users, which was a driving factor behind the acquisition...

"Over 95% of all VC-funded companies have male founders," said Pettid. "Over 85% are white. Great and innovative ideas can come from anyone, regardless of gender, race, and location. More than half of the campaigns featured on Republic have come from underrepresented founders.

chuck-head

Chuck Pettid, Republic

"In the past few years, the tech and video game industry has pushed the diversity message, but not enough is being done. We will look for great games, from both big and small developers, to work with and those games will come from founders and teams that represent our world." "

...But let's not start with him. 🤔
