wise old Boomer

Im not a boomer but a GenXer, but Im not sure why Boomer is an insult.  Boomers basically came , partied, got all the cool stuff wrecked the house and are now leaving the party without paying the bill. So is Boomer bad because they screwed us all so badly?

just shows their ignorance to the industry.  The whole reason Im here is because of the devs, including Tommy.  Its a who's who of industry greats if you actually, you know, know the history of gaming.

yeah, there is a lot of issues and to be honest I am glad I grew up in the 70s and 80s. I wouldnt want to be a young person in todays world.

as a whole I tend to agree, unless you work for it, you'll never appreciate it.  Hell in our day you had to work just to see a naked women. Either you had to go and do some sort of Indiana Jones temple like raid from your dads sock drawer to get your hands on a playboy,  or you had to mess with your cable box just to see some squiggly line boobs.  Made you appreciate it more...  LOL

Hey now I dunno wtf I did but I was able to eventually access all premium and ppv.and uhhhh certain other channels on.my cable box in.my.bed room via my cable box.

I totally programmed my remote not to directly access those channels if you just flipping through channels.  Lol  didnt want mom to find out if she cleaned my room while I wasn't home.  Anyways it stayed that way until.the cable provider required new boxes across the board. I luckily went through teen tears with it lol

well the early cable boxed looked like this.  Most kids could play it like an instrument. 3 rows  12 buttons  and a dial to dial in. To get squiggly porn you had to go in between levels with two channels pushed while playing with the dial.  It was an art form  :)

My favorite Boomer voting pattern that says "fuck you, I got mine" more than anything, is the drinking age laws.

With a voting block larger than anybody else, they were able to lower the drinking age to 18 or 19 in numerous states.

Then they voted again to raise it in 1983 to 21yo. Gen X began in 1965 & turned 18 in 1983. Also Soc Security collection was raised to 67yo after a certain date... 2030. Just as Gen Xers turn 65.

How conveeeenient!

I have friends of all ages. I just got off the phone with two of my friends, it was a three way call. Both in their mid 30's.

I was telling them I was considering the Amico as my next console purchase.

Wow! That was a mistake!

They said:  It's just old Atari games...what! it's $250!!...for re-rendered Bezerk!  just buy a Switch... or a Wii!

Then they asked about who the developers are for it... they we're underwhelmed when I showed them.

Then they asked if Waterworld was coming out for it jokingly? Said they'd wait for the Virtual Boy to make a comeback first!

It was brutal I tell ya. I told them to have open minds. And hold off on judgement till they play one.

They are both parents so I was hoping I'd win them over easily, that didn't happen.. I will report back when they

finally play one...

Rick

Are they fairly hard core gamer parents? I see a number of online e-zines that cater to gamers are leaning towards the P&I side of things, going so far as suggesting families might be better off getting a Switch, Wii U or Wii. I understand kids love getting used, second hand items for Christmas presents.

Over 50 is old, which is bad in general  to people under 35.

Well I am but my son is 21. And hes been getting too many of my 2nd hand items.  Now I make him pay for them lol but hes too old now to fit the category.  But hes a odd case nes is his favorite. That might change when the Amico comes out

I’m looking forward to the reimagined version of miner 2049er ! I used to play the heck out of that game on my Atari 5200. Also the reimagined version of Atari adventure will be awesome. That was amazing on the 2600 at the time . We used our imagination and it seemed so cool 😀

Is the generational leap for consoles now so little it can cause a crash?  I started noticing this decline with the introduction of the current gaming systems.  I really couldn't see a big leap between the PS3/PS4  It seemed like nothing new was introduced that made it groundbreaking.

If you play something like Red Dead and then try Red Dead 2 you can see major improvements in lighting and animation. Both are excellent games, I'm a sucker for westerns.

I loved this era. I owned both for a bit. But I'll always be a Genesis guy. The extra speed of the Genny made it perfect for this arcade loving guy! Road Rash and Sonic!! Wish I still had Global Gladiators, I still have boxed copies of Cool Spot and Aladdin! 😁

PS1 for the win! 3D graphics with amazing music! Wipeout and Destruction Derby all day! And one of the best versions of Road Rash.. So glad they converted it from the 3DO.

- PS2/XBOX standardized the controller setup we now think of today. Dual analog sticks, D-pad, 4 shoulder buttons, 4 face buttons. It allowed for 3D worlds to be easily navigated and really popularized open worlds and First Person Shooters. It also made the console a multi-media box in that it wasn't just a console, it was also a DVD player.  That was huge.

Here's where I lost interest for a few years. I bought a PS2 but it was just prettier versions of the same PS1 games. I remember having dual analog sticks on PS1 playing Gran Turismo. Wait... That's right GTA3 launched on the PS2.. ok that's the one game i played for 6 months straight. Then I got burned out on Playstation. LOL

- PS3/XBOX 360 was probably the biggest leap in my opinion.  It made online connectivity standard. PS3 had wireless internet built in. Hard drives became standard. Graphics leaped to high definition, and it really made for a big change in the way games look.  Thanks to the Wii, motion control gaming also became popular, which Sony quickly tried to copy.  Perhaps the biggest change though was the introduction of digital distribution of games. This opened the door to entirely new games and new genres that made no sense with the old model. Smaller games could be created and this led to the "indie" scene.

Totallly agree with this one! I had the hardest damn time picking a side! Xbox or play it safe with another Playstaion... Well my oldest son showed me Halo. That's the end, but really the beginning of a long story. LOL

My current system is XB1. This is where I hang out.I don't watch much TV, I mostly play..

I'm old-school AND hardcore I guess.. Some night's I'll play a game on my cell phone or 3DS, some nights competitive Halo. The next night it might be a 2600 game. I love them all!

So this Holiday I think I'll skip the Xbox Series X hype. But faster load times and Ray tracing sound crazy cool. Maybe I just need something different! 😲

So many great questions and topics are being discussed here.  I'm going to sum up all my comments in one post (hopefully)

What initials did I use for high scores?  As boring as it is, I've always used my actual initials and never felt the need to be a smartass.  Funny, as it's probably the only time I don't feel like being a smartass.

Is the generational leap for consoles now so little it can cause a crash?  I started noticing this decline with the introduction of the current gaming systems.  I really couldn't see a big leap between the PS3/PS4  It seemed like nothing new was introduced that made it groundbreaking.

- PS5/XSX will make games even prettier and perform even better. I actually think that biggest winner in this battle is going to be the PS4. I think it will drop in price and people will continue to buy it for years, much as the PS2 kept selling long after the PS3 was introduced.

Why are Millenials/GenY so depressed?  I'm going to sound like a grumpy old man on this, but it's the truth. It's because they've had it too easy.  I know not everyone falls into that category, but as a society we've made the basic function of surviving really easy. They don't have to fight for it. They aren't kicked out of the nest and told to swim or sink. Being independent and taking care of yourself is psychologically very important to being mentally healthy. People in their mid-20's still living at home are essentially refusing to grow up because they have been accustomed to being taken care of and moving out is a scary proposition. But we as people need that. We need to face this world in order to grow. To give ourselves a sense of accomplishment. To prove to ourselves that we can do it. When you don't take that leap, you feel like you have no self worth. That's when people turn inward and have their lives consumed with gaming. The need to find that satisfaction still drives within them, and if they can't do it in the real world, they'll attempt to find it in a virtual one. The problem is that it's not the same and the brain doesn't interpret as the same.

Tommy talks about moving out of his parents house and sleeping under a bridge... now that is scary as all can be. But he did it. He made the effort. He went for it. I moved out after I graduated college and haven't looked back since. It's important.

Rant over.  (and Tommy is either misleading us with his clues, or something doesn't add up. Guess I'll have to wait until the end of the week to find out)

2 things on this I'm not 100% on agreement. 1 the ps3 and xbox 360 being the biggest leap. The original xbox did high definition though not all  did 720p many did. Some even did 1080i. And even the 360 didnt do much better than that. Infact many xbox 1s release titles barely hit 1080p.

Millenials and future genz's:

They have a hugh up hill battle, wages for them and cost of living is far less in their favor.  It was alot cheaper to rent a place. It use to be my parents real boomers had a new home 2 new cars and a new boat all on 1 income dad was a carpet my mom could stay home. All in the laye 70s,Try doing that these days. And its only getting worse.  But thats also no excuse to be lazy but to work harder.

I just turned 50 last year. Bad is the wrong word, more like people over 50 are uncool to a lot of kids under 35. Like those single bars that have signs that say "No one over 40".

Depends on who you talk to. I started WW2 reenacting when I was 15, so I spent a lot of time with a bunch of guys in their 50s~60s starting when I was that age. There was a military surplus store in town and I used to go there not only to buy WW2 gear, but also to hang out with all of the WW2~Korea~Vietnam veterans because those guys are awesome.
