Intellivision Amico - Tommy Tallarico introduction + Q&A

I can understand his argument in some ways. The price has gone up. Yes. The ballpark was 149-179.  I honestly thought it would end up $199.00 when all is said and done. When I heard they changed to capacitive touch screens in the controllers, I knew for sure it would go up a little more than that. Plus the onboard storage is going up. Either 32gigs on board or 16 gigs and an SD card. Possibly tripling the original amount that was going to be in the system. My guess is that the CPU/RAM configuration probably changed between then and now, after some extensive research and interviews with developers. We've never been told much about that aspect. Just that it will play fun games.  After adding all that up and tossing in the world situation on top of that. I still think it's a fair price. Will I be able to play the new Mircrosoft Flight Sim or the next Uncharted on the Amico? No. If you believe what we've heard, you will not be able to play the new Earthworm Jim on the xbox Series X or PS5. I'm sure that there will be other games that will be exclusive. Not just versions with different levels. Maybe even a game that stars a certain Reeses Pieces eating alien.

I can also understand the want of a Switch. There are some amazing games on that system. My family loves our Switch.  I don't think anyone believes the Amico will replace any of the main gaming systems. The Amico will compliment them.

I can also sort of understand the argument about the power vs price.  I just checked Best Buy, and for the same amount of money that you can purchase a Switch, if you can find one, you can get an Xbox one X. WAY more powerful. But Power does not necessarily mean more fun or a better system.  We've seen it proved after multiple systems have sold more than their more powerful counterparts.

In the end, a lot of the people on the forum have been sold on the games we've seen already. Some of the hints given as to other games that will come out. Tommy's direct Answers to us. A few of his hints that made us all ask the question that echos throughout these pages: Wouldn't that be something?  For me I was sold because he answered my question directly: Tempest and Adventure will make their way to the Amico. I know it won't be right away. But the thought of both of those games on a new system makes me happy. If a system has a game coming out that really captivates you. That is reason enough to buy that system. For Some it's a Mario or Zelda. For others it's Halo. Still others it's any one of a number of system sellers. I would say you can add Shark! Shark!, Moon Patrol, and others yet to be announced for the Amico.

As Aldous Huxley once said, "You pays your money, you takes your pick".  Obviously the pricing of Amico could quite possibly deter some people and lead them to picking another product.  One the other hand, the pricing could actually help the Amico if Tommy and IE can push, sell, and convince people the value they are getting.  Whether that will happen or not, we will see come 10/10/2020.  Also, the games that have been shown for the Amico have excited some and just elicited a 'meh' for others.  However, to each his/her own.  Its whatever floats your boat.  Gaming is gaming is gaming.  No need for any hate and massive putdowns on anything.  Perhaps the games for the Amico will really excite and turn people on to the console, or perhaps maybe they won't.  Time will tell.  Regardless, while I may not be picking up an Amico and would quite possibly look to get another machine (like an Xbox One X or Switch) first, I definitely wish Tommy, IE, and the Amico good luck and I look forward to seeing what they have in store for everyone now and even much later afterwards once the Amico has launched.

Sound philosophical outlook, as each person has different tastes. I’m all in and am pumped. I understand the machine, idea and games of Amico aren’t for everyone...I just wanna have some old school fun with my family 🙂

Why does this urge for the haters to come out seem to only exist in video games?  If IE had announced it was creating a movie streaming service that focused on family friendly content, would anyone even bat an eye?  There are just certain things about the gaming community I don't understand.  The other one is the constant use of the word "spoilers."  Everything seems to be a spoiler these days. It's beyond me.

Oh, I believe there are plenty of haters for everything, especially in things like the entertainment industry.  Look how much has been piled on the last Star Wars movie, and to some degree rightfully so imo.  Still, no need to take things to an extreme.  But, there are possible exceptions.  However, no need to go into those here.  Been plenty enough already.  Time to move on and forward.

I would say "PSYCHE!!"... but lets be honest, you guys figured it out as I gave a little too many hints!  (you guys are GOOD!).  Saying it wasn't J was the first time I've ever said anything in here that wasn't true at the time (sorry if I disappointed some of you).  But c'mon... what was I supposed to say?  "Yeah, you got it... let me blow all of our exclusive coverage and stories."  :)   Besides, as we all know, the haters lurk here daily just waiting for any kind of item they can use against us to try and destroy Amico.  Wasn't going to give them the pleasure of blabbing it all over the internet a week before the press release was ready.  :)

ANYWAY!!  All of that aside...

Let me know what you think of this news!!!!!

Who is ready for yet another incredible and stunning moment? THIS is a BIG one!

INTELLIVISION ENTERTAINMENT ADDS RENOWNED GAME INDUSTRY VETERAN J ALLARD AS GLOBAL MANAGING DIRECTOR

Former Microsoft® Executive and Xbox® Co-Founder Returns to the Video Game Industry to Further Bolster Leadership Team and Launch Intellivision® Amico™ Game Console

IRVINE, Calif. – May 14, 2020 – Intellivision Entertainment, LLC today announced that J Allard has joined Intellivision as Global Managing Director. As Microsoft’s former Chief Experience Officer and Chief Technology Officer of the Entertainment and Devices Division, Allard’s mark and legacy in the games industry stem from two decades at Microsoft in which he co-founded the Xbox, Xbox Live, Live Arcade and Xbox 360 among many other tentpole software products.

“We are thrilled to add such an amazing industry legend to our team,” said Intellivison CEO Tommy Tallarico. “J’s experience, like-minded vision and leadership in the technology and video game industries as a visionary, product designer, and gamer will further strengthen the executive leadership team and innovation legacy at Intellivision.”

A lifelong gamer, Allard grew up with the original Intellivision and published his first game Lemonade Stand in the early 80s for the TRS-80 Color Computer.

Allard was recruited by Microsoft in 1991 and went on to deliver over 40 products, was awarded over 50 patents, and helped build four multi-billion-dollar businesses. He made an impact early on in his career when he wrote a memo titled “Windows: The Next Killer Application on the Internet,” outlining why Microsoft needed to change its course and redefine itself with the Internet. The memo led to Bill Gates – Co-Founder and CEO at the time – to overhaul the company’s strategy and Allard became known as “Microsoft’s Father of the Internet.”

In 1998, Allard co-founded Xbox, ushered Microsoft into the video game console space with the company’s first game console in 2001, and grew the business into the fastest one billion dollar business in the company’s history. Allard was recognized as “Top 35 Entertainment Execs Under 35” by The Hollywood Reporter, “The Most Powerful Men Under 38” by Details, and “The Most Important Person in Video Games” by Giant Bomb.

In his new role at Intellivision Entertainment, Allard will provide invaluable insights to support the final development of Amico – the new console designed to make video gaming accessible to all. His expertise and deep knowledge in user experience, operating systems, game certification, and building ecosystems will help Amico stay true to its mission to bring family and friends together again with fun games that everyone can play.

“Amico’s vision speaks to me, not just because I grew up with Intellivision, but because I grew up playing with my family and friends,” said J Allard. “Playing together is a timeless concept that I feel the video game industry has largely forgotten. The Intellivision team is deeply committed to bringing back shared fun and affordable gaming for everyone.”

Intellivision Amico is planned to release beginning in October and pricing for the system starts at $249. For more information, please visit www.IntellivisionAmico.com.

No problem Tommy ! Also when you said "Wouldn't be something", that was a hint for some of us here ! So it was partial lying ! lol 😆

But now, you know some people are good here for the guessing game, so be careful ! lol 😉

And it was really fun to participate to try to find it out ! That's one of the many reasons why we like to be on AtariAge. It's like if we are also part of the team ! lol

It's a great news. Congratulations ! Wonderful help like this is always welcome.

Well, you gave away more clues than you had to, and really even announcing anything was more than you had to do.  And in all fairness, you did you use trademarked comment "Wouldn't That Be Something" when talking about him.  That should have been more than enough for everyone in here to know it was him.

I will say this though... wow.  I really am interested into what the reception will be for this.  At the very least, Allard's name carries enough weight that a lot of gaming sites will probably cover the news.

BTW @RxScram 's deleted hint referred to a post where I offhandedly remarked ”He did X and it wasn’t even..". And now you know... the rest of the story.

(long time radio personality Paul Harvey reference there for the younger crowd)

Now that is quite the impressive addition to the Intellivision team! I am expecting to see a lot of coverage of this announcement in the next while, that is a big name in consoles!

Having an industry legend like J Allard sign on board with the Amico console will hopefully quell some of the naysayers who think this is all some kind of gigantic con job. With the impressive background and resume he is sporting, I am pretty sure he can tell if a project is going to be a winner or not. It is always an uphill fight for the new guys, but if he has confidence in the Amico enough to work with Intellivision on it, that should quell a lot of the fence-sitters as to the legitimacy of the Amico.

This was an announcement well worth the wait to see!

I loved that guy. For those who don't know he was a long time radio news announcer and did a surprising facts history segment called "The Rest of the Story" for many, many years. Another bit of Paul Harvey trivia - the real radio pros prided themselves on ending their recorded news segments right on the last second (editing was MUCH harder back then) and so he always ended with "Paul Harvey... Good Day!" with the "Good Day" landing in that last second and the small pause was to adjust for any mistimings during the news reading. So he always ended perfectly on the last second.

This VentureBeat one was really interesting.  Though, I don't know why Amico is always referred to as a "retro game console."  It's not retro. Small irritation, but there were a number of things and quotes in this article that weren't just lifted from the press release.  Sounds like J is fully onboard with everything and has been for quite some time.

Yes, I agree.  It was a good article.  The retro game console thing seems to be a habit.  It gets thrown around way too much.  We all know it's not a retro console.  But for some, it's retro to them.  Anyway, I'm glad J Allard is a part of the IE team.  This is really awesome and will help the Amico succeed.

The exciting addition of J completely trumps any required subterfuge on the announcement, so no worries at all on that count.

Fantastic stuff and we'd be delighted to hear anything further from J on his excitement to be back into console development again!

Yeah.  It really came out great.  Dean Takahashi got the exclusive to interview J (which is why there is so much added stuff in there).  He didn't do any other interviews... so this is the only one you'll see for now.   Big things in the works though!   :)
