Way more funny when kevtris chimes in though.

Don't knock FTL's Dungeon Master until you try it.

The graphics are pretty 'meh' by today's standards, but the game itself holds up beautifully. Huge dungeons, challenging puzzles and monsters. Hidden treasures and passages....

This game and Chaos Strikes Back was what put Atari ST gaming on the map, it was basically their 'Halo'. It also invented the 3D dungeon crawl. There are still fan sites running for this series, and more recently spawned a very well received spiritual successor series of games, the 'Legend of Grimrock'. Not too shabby for a thirty year old game!

Once certainly could do a lot worse then to emulate the Dungeon Master style of dungeon crawl.

It's actually an older game, but has been updated with some modern quality of life enhancements and redrawn graphics. I could sit around and play these ancient style CRPGs all day if life didn't keep getting in the way.

Sometimes I wonder if the folks who have been away from gaming for a long time, and think they need a new console for a return to form, just don't realize what's already out there?

I remember renting it for snes and loving it. The graphics do look meh but everything else is there.

I honestly think it is a mixture. So many of the old games (or new game in same vein as the old ones) are out there. It's the finding them that could be the problem. I could see Steam appearing intimidating for people. It isn't bad but for some people the hard part is getting started. I do think the ease of a console would be nice for some

Steam is an embarrassment of riches. Perhaps some folks just need help with discovery, curation, and maybe a little imagination.

Want to play a game with me? Name a game you remember, or wish existed, and I'll recommend something from Steam or mobile with good reviews, that you can buy and play today.

There are precious few truly original ideas in the world, after all.

Or play them on anything with SCUMM VM. Hey, Blade Runner finally got a GOG release recently.

A modern series that plays like Maniac Mansion is Deponia, lots of sequels to it too.

Or of course any of the very popular Telltale games. They were dead but now they're not quite gone, I gather?

That company is yet another sad example of hard it is to manage a stable of software developers and keep the company profitable for a long time. I love the underdogs but there's a lot to be said for financial stability and proven success.

Yeah for heavy keypad games I do better if I memorize the button placement but without the tactile feel of the buttons I’m not sure how that would work. But I suppose the games won’t require that much touchpad usage like a game like cloudy mountain does on original hardware.

I think Tommy alluded to something about tactile feedback in one of his patent comments.  There have been a few companies taking shots at solutions for tactile feedback on touch screens over the years.  I remember one with an inflatable bladder behind an elastic coating on the touch screen that could create raised buttons.  It's a problem that's fascinated me and I used to contemplate more when we were more focused on mobile gaming.

@Flojomojo's comments about varying focal distances being a challenge for older people was both a valid point and stung a little too much. :) I've been told I need progressives, but haven't quite given in to it yet.  But yeah, switching between the TV and my phone (during commercials) is not as easy as it used to be.

Yeah that's one thing I've been trying to wrap my head around but I guess we won't know until we see it in action.

I would be really interested to see how they would tackle Treasure of Tarmin!

I don't think they plan on doing treasure of tarmin.  First person perspective and single screen multiplayer would make it difficult to do.

That’s still pretty hard with the physical keypad. Sometimes I think I’m on the clear button when I’m actually on number seven. I can’t imagine how they can make it any better.

I wouldn't expect virtual buttons.  Swiping and tapping the touchpad should be designed so you don't have to look at it.

It takes some effort to figure that out.  Those people need the "apple" of console video games.   And what I mean by that is something that simplifies it for them.

That's true, I forgot about the multiplayer commandment.

They can do a top-down or three-quarter perspective view rpg game.  They are doing a game titled "adventure" and another called "swords and serpents" but there's not anything close to an rpg on their list.

I'm sure there's a way. It could easily be done if split screen, but pretty sure that is out too.

That would be cool but Micro Machines really would be cooler NOT being on a normal racetrack. I always like them racing on desks, around mugs, and whatnot.

How about actually racing on those tracks you could buy in the 70's/80's where you snapped them all together and the cars raced on the electrical wires embedded on the tracks? That would be neat.
