Physical Media. I liked the idea of having physical media again. Something I have disliked in the recent generations.

With the announcement you will still need internet just disappoints me that the Amiicos (cards, boxes, figures, manuals, or whatever) will basically just be a more expensive digital purchase. It almost feels less like physical media and more like a fancy giftcard. Same problem I have with buying physical discs for Xbox anymore.

Thoughts?

I am anxiously awaiting the “type” of physical media as well. Being a collector I like my original boxes, discs, special editions, etc. I don’t know Tommy and he always is straight up, but I wonder if it’s more like a “gimmick” type of physical media. They are supposed to have SD card slot on Amico so maybe we can get cool boxes and the game on the SD card. This would be fine with me as all Switch games come on a SD sized card. Looking forward to his reveal on this and some of the other unique features he’s touted the machine will do.

I personally do not buy physical media anymore for that reason. I will buy physical media if there is a collection and or other reasons to do so but recently it feels like there really is not a reason to do so.

StarCraft. It's free now, so no reason not to play it, especially since it's one of the 5 games that I would give to space aliens if they landed on Earth and I was chosen to give them 5 video games on behalf of humanity since it's just that good.

Same. I wonder if you still need the physical thing to play it, but I'm guessing you don't because you can play your games on someone else's system with your controller. No choice but to wait.

I like that Tommy has physical media for those who want it but I'm personally downsizing now that I've moved. I don't think I'll be getting any physical games unless they are exclusively physical.  My two sons currently have all my ps2 games, any xbox 360 games I owned and many of my ps3 games. They added them to their collections.  Next generation for the win.

Even with all that I still have way too many physical copies of games. I can't bare to part with my psp collection and I just got most of the portable Fire Emblem games (many are fan translations of Japan only games)

I'm hopeless.

🤣

It’s hard to let go of physical collections. I have sold some, traded some and even downloaded games digitally. Went thru the mega rom collection phase with 20,000 games on one build...but I always come back to liking physical media. Never forget the 1 hr car ride to Hills back when Pac Man was released for the Atari 2600, looking at the box art all the way home, building the anticipation even more. Guess folks like me who are 46 will always be nostalgic for physical media.

I'm 45 and used to loved physical media.  I collected hundreds of games and often bought the digital so I could keep them in the shrink wrap. Sadly though days are passing for me as all that I own is now within one room. I can't keep it all and I always told my two sons they'd get anything before I sold it or gave it away. Unfortunately they have a ton of their own collections and are running out of space. The dilemma of a collector. Lol

Yeah I'm hoping it isn't a gimmick but the announcement saying you have to be connected to the internet initially makes it just sound like its recognizing that it needs to make a digital download. Which at that point means you will have a neat box (or whatever it is) to show you have a digital game. 40 years from release that makes it seem it will not be the same as our carts that we have for the Intv, 2600, etc.

😫

I am having the same feelings. I stopped buying Xbox physical for the same reason. It is pointless to.

Ooo thanks for the StarCraft recommendation. 👍

I think it is that nostalgic feel. If the game still plays awesomely, why should I care if it is a cart or digital rom?

It shouldn’t make a difference, but I enjoy gazing upon my collection 😭

I still favor physical editions on Switch when they exist, but mostly because I don't want to buy a new, bigger SD card every other month... 😕 But I find clearly more convenient to have access to every game without changing game cards. I really hate physical editions for PS4 though, because almost everytime I had to install 50GB of data anyway, and I still had to keep the disc inserted to play, as if the disc was just some kind of physical DRM. 😑 Which is even more annoying when you use the PS4 as a Blu-ray player as well; that's probably why I don't play anymore on my PS4!

The best thing about the Amico is a 128GB  SD card will be enough for probably most of the collection. Tommy stated the games aren't that large in size.  I'm over exaggerating but probably not by much

Maybe @Spriggy can tell us?

I wonder if he even knows about Fosters?

Ahh.  Fosters.  The Aussie beer that Aussie's don't drink.  No joke intended.  I buy a six pack every couple of years, just to feel nostalgic for it's popularity in the 70's and early 80's in Oz.  I don't remember the last time seeing ANYONE drink it down here.  But I digress.

Nah, I'm thinking something like Amibros. No box, just a figure or something.

Yeah I remember another Aussie telling me they don't really care about Fosters Down Under.

I do find it funny there's a beer parody sign in the family friendly system's games.

Maybe if you break the time record you will get the Cool Joe trophy since if you go that fast your tires have to be SMOKIN'!!

🍻 Cheers mate!

:D

It will be cool to see more footage of this game and the "slot racer" games.

I'm thinking a small box that holds a RFID card. Might have like a short manual printed on it. Wouldn't need more than two 'pages' if the games are simple to pick up and playn

I'd really only be interested in purchasing something I could almost display like a Skylander, Amibo, or Gundam. Nothing big, but something other than a PS2->Switch case. I have hundreds of those damn things. Shoot, on my desk right now I have two Star Wars Heroes figures, one a storm trooper and the other an AT-AT Driver; A small dinosaur that would work perfectly as a Large monster on a D&D battlemat; three Heroclix figures, one of which will be my next D&D monk character; and a skull and a black jaguar that I got from a cruise to Mexico. Oh crap, I also have an Asoka and Anakin Infinity figure by my pen tray and a Joey Ramone POP figure in front of one of my computer speakers. I'd love to add a Running Man™ figure or maybe a B-17 Bomber to my desk. Don't ask what I have at work.

Oh crap somebody should ask so I'll tell you all. I have a Dollar Store picture frame with printouts of all the Atari patches I've earned so far on a blue metallic wrapping paper background that makes it all look like a shadow box. I also have three gundam and four Transformer figures. People come into my shop and every once in a while ask about any of them. Yeah, I'd love to talk about Amico when someone asks about, "that figure, isn't that from Atari." And I respond with something like, "Nah, Atari hasn't made anything in years worth a damn, but if you have a family and want to play games together, check this out." Oh, I forgot, people also ask about the Running Man™ hat I wear at work. I just like figures I guess.

I know people here have had questions about the Karma Engine and physical media. I believe Tommy is willing answer anything that is not under wraps over on the other forum.

He may just state to "wait until you see what we have in store" or "I can't yet talk about that" but I find he answers more than he doesn't.

🙂

I think we are at the point we don't have that information/will get the same or similar answers that you gave.

We know physical media still requires internet. So its scannable in some fashion.

Karma Engine is there but could be exploited by others. I would guess there is something similar in solo mode like Captain Toad game that if you die enough you get invincibility.

I will continue to speculate until something official is announced. Speculation can be more fun sometimes. E3 was mentioned as being a time to reveal what type of physical media, which has now changed. I really hope all this RFID stuff isn't the reason for the price creep. The carrying games to another console is cool. But if the games are that cheap and good why not just convince your friend to spend the $5, $8, or $10?

RFID has been done before too. I think and hope it will be better implemented here, but some will have nightmarish flashbacks...

Funny that it was made by Mattel, and Intellicard! 🤣🤪🥓🤡🤡

The price increases now are likely a result of what's happening in China due to the crisis.

The karma engine will be implemented by the programmers of each game.  I've heard somewhat conflicting statements.  That in a competitive two player game it will automatically balance a game between strong and weak players so both have an equal chance of winning.  And that it will only kick in if a player is hopelessly behind.  So in many cases it might not kick in at all, and shouldn't affect things like high scores.

The response to questions about physical media has always been wait for announcements.  The timing to reveal more seems to be outside his control.  At one time waiting on patents were mentioned.
