Intellivision Amico - Tommy Tallarico introduction + Q&A

Recommended Posts

I am kind of wishing I was at CES for this Tech Up series (promo video) that Tommy is speaking at. Would love to see what some of the companies are doing creatively with board games/toys/VR and such. The host Val Vacante is all about the leading edge of gaming and would be kinda cool to see what other alternate gaming ideas are coming down the pike besides the Amico.

I also acknowledge that your opinion is perfectly valid, but as someone who preorders literally every new console that comes along and many, many games including collector's editions each year, I can tell you that it would be rare for a company to require more than a nominal deposit for either these days.  The places that typically take preorders requiring full payment are companies that do limited runs and don't have the financing to be able to risk cancelled preorders.  It's usually collectible sculpture/statue companies or limited poster prints where even losing a handful of preorders would be catastrophic that require payment in full.

The great thing about this is if the amount to preorder the Founders Edition bugs you that much you have the option to just wait for product release and get a different version.

But he won’t because he pre-orders literally every new console that comes out. :rolling:

Yes.  This whole issue seems very simple to me: if you don't like the idea of the Founders Edition console, or how much it costs, or how it's being offered, or that they're collecting preorders for it ... how about you just don't preorder the Founders Edition console and wait for the regular Amico to be released instead like everyone else?  That could have saved about twenty pages of posts.

We're going to pretend Mr Tallerico didn't ask for thoughts about it?

Yeah, but what about the red flags? I see red flags everywhere, my psychiatrist already knows about this and it's getting better but WAIT! Here's another red flag right there. A clear red flag to me.

Perhaps, and I'm sure that the first time these complaints were voiced, it was useful feedback for him.  But we've long since belabored the point.  Time to move on.

The gameboard 1 looks cool.  Much pricer than amico but  its combining the traditional board game and RPGs board game  crowed and simple arcade gaming . They are offering both a subscription model and the ability to purchase games individually. They are showing off 4 of the games at ces. Looks pretty cool. Can use physical  or digital game pieces. As well as phone for things like card games.  I'm totally interested in this and the amico as friends and I have talked about both for a weekly gamenight.

It is true. We probably should have ignored bojay, etc., comments since less than 1% of people interested in the FE would agree with them.

Really, if you asked me for your opinions on a project and I implied you were an idiot scammer like the VCS and Chameleon folks, you’d be cool with that?

Agreed & they are at CES too this year. Not sure if they are part of this section of CES, but they probably should be. 2020 is just going to be a great year for gaming. XBox Series X, PS 5, probably a Switch Pro, Amico, GameBoard 1, VCS (hopefully), Playdate (and I know I have probably forgotten some) - something for everyone - gamers of all types. Good time to be someone who loves games & gaming.

Nailed me - I am going to blame it on spellcheck - yeah that's it - spellcheck ;) Sorry 'Bowser'.

Btw you have never seen grief until spellcheck corrects Han Solo to 'Hans Solo' on a Star Wars forum. Those people are brutal.

My favorite was the guy who said he "liked to come home and play some games with a couple of bears." I couldn't let that one slide either.

I'm a bear. But not the #1 threat to America type bear.

I think it'd be cool if the Amico rendition of Yars' Revenge took some inspiration from Yar's Revenge...That is, the 2011 remake on 360 and PC. At the very least, taking from its visuals, maybe not so much from the gameplay.

(Context: Bought the PC version during the Steam Winter Sale; finally played it tonight, and actually had a good time.)

I'm hoping they take some ideas from pong next level from ps1. And maybe some 2d inspired visuals from.pacman championship for other stages for pong. Since we talking atari games they are making .I also cant wait til they start dev on the tempest game.

On-rails shooters are great.

Let's be honest, it takes at least two to debate anything.  Nobody is forcing Tommy to respond to literally every comment he takes issue with.  As I noted earlier, he could simply say "agree to disagree" and leave it at that, but he seems to want to argue each point and respond even to multiple posts that were specifically intended as discussion between specific forum participants.  I will say this though, your attempts to re-frame the debate by constantly analyzing the intent of other discussion participants or calling for civility while at the same time engaging in passive-aggressive criticism of other forum members isn't exactly helping to calm the tenor here.

He has agreed to disagree, many times

I think everyone has been using passive-agressive criticism and I will agree this constant circle-jerking isn’t fulfilling a useful purpose so let’s all be the adult in the room and move forward

He’s a master at “ball breaking”! You should hear the conversations we have when we sit down to play some original Intellivision - especially NHL Hockey, ML Baseball, or Utopia. But it’s great because he can dish it out as well as he can take it.

I would kindly ask that you stop making it so easy for me to make fun of you on the next podcast episode. Who are you? Rick? 😜

I’m genuinely considering buying all 2600 of the Founder’s Edition console variation just to protect all of you from potentially losing your money...also it would have saved me the approximately 2-3 hours I just spent trying to catch up on this thread. Totally worth it. Having said that, be assured that once the regular versions are released and we all know it’s real I will make many of them available to those who want them for a “minor” markup. You’re all welcome in advance. I have spoken.

The Gameboard-1 looks cool, I love the technology but at the same time I prefer a traditional board or a video game than laying a screen over the table. It will be interesting to watch how this works commercially, they say they have "100 games and counting". Let's see if this finally launches and, unlike Stadia, perhaps they even provide sales figures, being a physical console. However, apparently this is not the first time that somebody attempts something like this... They are trying to replace board games, but this has a different feel and the board seems too little. Several board game fans already discussed this a year ago: https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/2274533/well-could-have-some-novel-applications-wargaming

Back to the Amico, I hope racing games are similar to Mashed/Drive to Survive (PS2). In that game, you can activate an option so that players controlling cars that have been pushed out of the race start controlling a crosshair to shoot guided missiles that active cars must avoid.

I think that's the biggest hurdle for that kind of project. They can already make flexible screens though, so maybe stretchable screens are not too far off! ;)

You can attach multiple boards from 2 to I think they mentioned as much as 18 or whatever depends on how expandable the game field is design for. Rob wyatt used d&d as an example a hardvore player could add up to 9 boards. They also said they aim to cut cost as they can can up volume and make in mass. They are planning.on using the xbox ps model where they sell hardware at a loss.  I do like that they offer both purchase and subscription options  it's all downloaded no streaming.  And physical game pieces can work.   I'm def gonna wait til this hits shelves  but I'm aiming to get one.  This and the amico could complement each other quite well for different social experiences.  Would be interesting to see if they can partner with intellivision to say  do some interactive mixed media board game where they can use the board and amico controller but the tv as well.  No idea if tommy would entertain that further down the line as a possibility or not.... just saying it could be cool.
