Your entire point was made moot with that one paragraph I quoted earlier. It’s possible you don’t see it how we read it but man before asking for more civility, look within.  Choosing wrong words can make you lose your audience, you are verbose and intelligent enough to understand this I think.  If not we’ll there you have it

there are many examples in this thread of people who voiced concerns on the project but managed not to be on the receiving end of fatal fury Tommy.  Why is that?

maybe a reset would help.  Consider this:  you have been outspoken about how you feel concerning taking money for the FE.  Good point, you provided good reasons to back up your point.  Now let’s move on because Tommy isn’t going to change his mind for HIS own VALID reasons.

sounds cool?

Now that I'm back from CES... I'm picking up where I left off.  Top of pg. 188.

Yeah... I agree with Loafer 100% here.  I've never attacked anyone for having concerns or criticism for the machine.  But I will "hit back" when people come in here for the main purpose of being disrespectful or to cause drama.  It becomes clear within a few posts of who those folks are and what their agenda is.  That's okay... what do folks expect from a hardcore retro gaming online message board!   :)

As I've stated many times in the past... I love coming here to engage with folks I feel I have a lot in common with.  Same age, same love of Intellivision, etc.  And it's that love and passion for Intellivision that drives me and gives me creative ideas for the machine and software... so having other like minded folks in here giving their thoughts is like having 20 other Intellivision loving brains on the case as well.  And for that I thank you!  You can all feel like you have contributed to the creation of this machine... because in a small but powerful way... you have.

And for the folks who continue to purposely look for ways to tear us down.  Enjoy wallowing in your cesspool of negativity while the rest of us have fun.

:D

Totally off topic but pre-Browser president Reggie Fils-Aime is staying busy doing business & charity stuff and will be speaking at SXSW in Austin this year. Sounds like he is having a good semi-retirement.

Maybe he'll be joining Intellivision someday?   ;)

I'd love to see amico get the xfL license.  The actual rules seem perfect for arcade local co op and verses play or local team vs CPU.

Disagree.  Maybe eventually, if it picks up steam.  But for one, the last XFL limped to the end of one season.  I think by Week 2 or Week 3 viewership and coverage had basically seen enough.  If the league is basically washed up again this season, it's going to look like shovelware.  Will Amico always offer that one-time defunct league, should it fail?  Or discreetly pull it from the store - an oddity you had to be there to access?

Then there's the disconnect between licenses Intellivision can get, and those it cannot.  If Amico picks up the XFL license, and cannot get the NFL license (I think exclusively held by EA and the Madden series), it's going to look odd to the typical casual player or family.  "Here's Intellivision Football, and they have XFL Football.  No NFL?  No NCAA?  I'm good, thanks."   Just saying, you don't want the games to look inferior by the meer fact of having access to one easier accessible license and the inability to get the other.  Casuals don't know anything about license rights or EA's stranglehold on the major leagues.  I think most video game console owners don't either.

Aside from image, I find the rules a bit odd and will have limited mass audience appeal.  Overtime is a shoot-out like soccer or hockey.  Which works in those sports - a 20 or 40 minute period often has no scores with the presence of a goaltender.  Football has been more about the accumulation of drives and yardage to be rewarded by the score.  Hockey and Soccer afford effortless ball movement up and down the field - most players can pass or take the puck/ball the distance, but the final scoring attempt is always difficult to sneak the ball in when the team knows you're close for the attempt.  XFL Overtime is taking those sports' scoring principles and applying it to football.  I find it mismatched.  Of course it's a score every minute, so they see "intensity".  But it's one speed for the entirety of the game, a game with a low percentage need for Overtime - and they go straight to a shootout?  As if, "normal football wasn't working for you, let's hurry this up".  Football so seldom goes to double OT and a triple OT is a once every 1000 game oddity?  It just isn't necessary.  It wasn't necessary in hockey either, since a tie still awards points, but the league wanted higher ratings and the 90s and early 00s were notorious for throwing out the book to get more action, more scoring.

Kickoff rules are again completely skewed to make the kickoff more exciting.  If the NFL wanted to make Kickoffs safer (and they should, they're heightened injury situations), they'd move the players line of scrimmage closer to where the receiving player is, and enforce that the ball kicked off MUST go beyond THAT line of scrimmage (eliminates full speed hits).  It makes a kickoff akin to a running play opportunity, but you've got 10 blockers instead of 5, and not likely to advance the ball forward on a long return so much.   This no movement for three seconds after the ball hits the ground seems oddly still to me.

I do think they're onto a unique rule with the two forward passes allowed, which they allow so long as the first pass doesn't pass the line of scrimmage.  But I can see this get abused with a couple laterals as teams fall back and the offense gives up yards to spread the defense, a forward pass still behind the line of scrimmage, and a sneak "real" forward pass once somebody has dropped coverage after 15, 20 seconds of playtime.  Seems another rule to neuter defenses for higher scoring games.  I'm already pretty frustrated with the measures the NFL goes to to ensure higher scoring offense showcases.  It's quite a different sport.

Let's be honest, it takes at least two to debate anything.  Nobody is forcing Tommy to respond to literally every comment he takes issue with.  As I noted earlier, he could simply say "agree to disagree" and leave it at that, but he seems to want to argue each point and respond even to multiple posts that were specifically intended as discussion between specific forum participants.  I will say this though, your attempts to re-frame the debate by constantly analyzing the intent of other discussion participants or calling for civility while at the same time engaging in passive-aggressive criticism of other forum members isn't exactly helping to calm the tenor here.

No one is forcing me to respond to all the nice ones as well.  Responding to negativity or criticism that wouldn't be classified as "constructive" further shows that I'm confident in our product and don't mind discussing difficult topics or questions.  Remember that this is MY Q&A thread.  If I ignored the negative answers then folks would say I'm dodging them or just don't understand or comprehend the answers I'm giving and the effect they have.  Y'know... kinda like what you did at the beginning of this thread when you dismissed me and the company because we dared to have an important member of the Earthworm Jim team still involved with the new game... to quote... you said...

"the tone deaf response to the questions being raised about Doug TenNapel being attached to the new Earthworm Jim game are a real issue for me. It's not like the guy made some bigoted statements in private, he is someone who is very actively and publicly pursuing an anti-gay agenda. Very disturbed about this.

So, while I agree that this should not become a political thread, you and your company have made an openly political choice and taken an approach that I do not believe is consistent with anything I would associate myself with as a long time classic gamer. The impact in the marketplace of your choice is yet to be seen, but I think your further response here has made it clear that you simply don't understand the complexities of the position you have taken."

So it seems like Me and Intellivision are not something you would associate yourself with based on the misinformation you have received on Twitter about Doug TenNapel.   That's fine.  Completely your choice.  But I think you made it clear over a hundred pages ago that you don't like my views on the subject, you feel that decision was a "political choice" and because of it you don't want to associate yourself with anything Intellivision related.

Yet here we are.

:)

My point being that by coming here I put myself in a "no-win" situation.  Maybe someday some of you will know what it feels like to risk your career and life savings on an idea that you feel will impact the world and families in a positive way... work your ass off 20 hours a day, 7 days a week to make it happen... only to have certain folks with zero skin in the game to constantly shit all over you with wrong assumptions or flat our lies.  And if you don't respond you'll be seen as "hiding" something.  And if you do then you'll be labeled a
narcissist, used car salesman, marketer of hype or attention whore.

My wife didn't dislike it. It was a positive 'It's neat.' It was just to short for her to make a judgement.

I started getting her into games via the Atari (Drinking Human Cannonball anyone?). Then Nintendo specifically a lot of the WiiU. So she has an appreciation for 'older styled/arcade' type games. It just doesn't bring her back to simpler time in gaming like the AA homebrews and such do with me.

That's why when the next demo is released I want to have my D&D crew download the app and access the game together and get their thoughts. As you can probably tell I have the logo saved....

Cool.  Interested in hearing the feedback.

Probably going to take out the AR element as I think it ended up causing more issues than it was worth.  People just see it in the app store, don't read the instructions/directions at all... and then give us a bad review because they didn't realize they needed to point it at a logo.  We thought it would be something fun and cool and unique.  But in the end... people didn't get it or understand it and it's important for us to appeal to the masses and make it simple for anyone.  So we'll just launch the app straight into the logo from now on.

I wish you and your D&D crew (and wife) could play the co-op and/or the versus versions right now.  They are going to be super cool when they are completed.  You'll need to hopefully do a follow up when the game and system comes out.   :)

Tommy said they aren't just doinenone football. They also have 10 yard fight.  Btw the xfl has a legit shot. Last year that other league that failed did great actually on tv ratings but they had no real financial backbone.  Vince McMahon  isn't concerned with money for 3 years hes got just him unlike the original xfl which was a 50 50 ownership.  I think it will do well us they have great tv partnerships and nfl not in as geeatnof a ace with fans...dont get me wrong I dont think anyone beats nfl in near future but they will do strong.

I'm a consumer and a gamer.  Why would I care what investors think and why should I be asked to provide funding so a company can prove something to their investors or retailers?  That's quite literally what some companies use crowdfunding to do and I don't like it in those instances and I don't like it here.

Then don't take part in our Founder's Edition.

You make it seem like you are somehow being forced to put money down in hopes of receiving something in the future (i.e. what every crowdfunding campaign is).  This isn't the case here at all.

Just wait till the system comes out... give it a try... and if you like it... buy it.  If you don't... then don't buy it.

Simple huh?

Why waste your time typing at this point or debate people who like the idea of having something super unique that very few will have?  What good do you think it does?

Baffling.

I am kind of wishing I was at CES for this Tech Up series (promo video) that Tommy is speaking at. Would love to see what some of the companies are doing creatively with board games/toys/VR and such. The host Val Vacante is all about the leading edge of gaming and would be kinda cool to see what other alternate gaming ideas are coming down the pike besides the Amico.

Yeah!  I met and connected with a lot of super cool people in the "toy" space which was really nice as coming from video games... I didn't interact too much with those folks (only their gaming departments).  Made a lot of great connections that will pay dividends for Amico!

Yes.  This whole issue seems very simple to me: if you don't like the idea of the Founders Edition console, or how much it costs, or how it's being offered, or that they're collecting preorders for it ... how about you just don't preorder the Founders Edition console and wait for the regular Amico to be released instead like everyone else?  That could have saved about twenty pages of posts.

Seems so simple doesn't it.

You have to start asking yourself at this point... what the real agenda is for some of these folks.

Once or twice is fine... but page after page of attacks of how we are handling the situation gets old quick.

Really, if you asked me for your opinions on a project and I implied you were an idiot scammer like the VCS and Chameleon folks, you’d be cool with that?

Yeah... the folks slinging their crap don't really have a sense of self awareness when it comes to the way they approach the situation.  They just passively aggressively say it could be a scam... that they hope it isn't... and then when I answer them back... I'm nothing more than a cheesy salesman trying to push my scammy crap on people.  They also aren't self aware that most of the folks here see right through them.  :)

You can't win em all.

I think the outreach has been genuinely impressive; the YouTubers covering this, the overwhelming response in AtariAge, in the Amico subReddit, on the Intellivision social media groups, mentions in articles.. all incredibly positive responses to the engagement [we] get with Intellivision's CEO/President - most anybody commenting has had positive things to say about said response.  You're going to get somebody saying you're thin-skinned or surrounding yourself with yes-men or fanboys to defend themselves.  Some amount of personal slings from anonymous user accounts here.  Everything has its detractors.  And there's been good, constructive criticism and questions here too - so those reading this, don't think my fanboy senses are kicking in.  Debate is good.  Differences of opinion fair, not buying into something - as natural as being excited about something you cannot purchase or see yet.  You think Intellivision fanboys are bad?  The entire sports fan world and talk radio industry builds itself around discussing match-ups and hypotheticals and future draft picks and journalists' power rankings - all irrelevant to watching the game they love, all highly speculative and highly entertaining, gratifying for the fan.  This is no different, we're just a different shade of fan with a different style of trash-talk sometimes. 😁

I don't know if the advice is worth anything, but I don't see a benefit to respond to the folks already given an answer to, or have identified that they're not really all that constructive or interested in fact-finding.  Some people just construct a different narrative and that's their baby.  But the co-op aspect of a forum, I wouldn't respond personally, especially as others here are more than happy to respond.  Some of us verbosely.  😏

Apple Arcade I think is also leaning into affordability and simplified controls/gaming for all ages, and certainly curation - their library is intentionally small (~100 games but growing each week) and the games are largely experiences that aren't going to be disappointing to players limited to an iPhone or iPad (assuming this is the largest contingent).  Though Apple themselves say "the number of games available on Apple TV and Mac are a tad smaller because some of the games rely on touch controls".. some of these are so built around touch mechanics, they would need a rebuild for a different input medium.  The Enchanted Kingdom features sliding puzzles as core gameplay.  Ok, swiping motion works great on a glass display pane.  Same with Hexaflip and Spek.  Essentially highly polished mobile games featuring a swipe mechanic.  Chu Chu Rocket is setting 2-6 directional cues and letting the action play out (puzzle solving) or responding by tapping to set the directional cues as the action happens (responsive strategy).  Still, tapping is essential.  Easy enough for the device.  Don't Bug Me is a tower defense game (we've seen dozens of these and several hundred more clones on mobile),  Other games like Hot Lava are largely on-rail adventures where you are jumping but the gameplay is forgiving - approximate gets you to where you need to go.  Exit the Gungeon is a bullethell shooter but there's a lot of forgiveness and invincibility baked into a couple learned moves so you don't need too much controller precision.  Jenny LeClue is basically a narrative-driven "Choose Your Own Adventure" mold, while Projection: First Light is a runner, and we've seen a number of these types work on a mobile platform.  Other games like Dead End Job have a small enough play field and forgiving hit detection so it's easy to complete the tasks with touchscreen controls, while Skate City looks like you're mostly using the touchscreen to execute timed tricks.  The library should work because the games fit the lowest-common-denominator platform: touchscreen only input devices.

Which I think reinforces the notion that quality and really enjoyable games needn't have complex controls behind them to shine.  I think Amico's two buttons and a touchscreen (plus the clickable disc) raises the level of precision and even difficulty you could see beyond what Apple is presenting to its wide audience.  But obviously entire games are routinely created based on one core gameplay mechanic (Super Mario Sunshine, Luigi's Mansion, Sonic Spinball, Decap-Attack) mixed with a couple expected elements.  No reason a touchscreen or an action button couldn't handle that special mechanic, the other button or two basic functions (jump/shoot/pick-up/roll/brake/etc.) and fluid movement with a directional disc.

Where Apple doesn't shine as well and goes in a different direction with this library - its games are largely solitary experiences.  Droid phone users are left in the dark, unless they're purchasing a several hundred/thousand dollar Apple product, which is a pretty lofty entrance fee.  Also, end the subscription, lose access.. $60 (or $50 if you pay up front) a year isn't so much, but it's still software as a service, the games aren't yours, you're renting access to them.  They're making I'm sure a nice amount of money if you forget and don't pay attention to that small iTunes fee, which we all have experienced that tiny fee and put off investigating for months/years, not realizing the money wasted.  Still, I'm excited the platform is out, it's great to see these new products adopting various core fundamentals of the Amico's raison d'etre.  It only helps convince investors (beside detractors) that the principles are trending and gaining traction among Forbes 500 companies (Apple and Google.. maybe it's Forbes 5?) and helps Intellivision deliver its messaging to casuals as other systems cite "anyone can play!" or "gaming shouldn't need a $$$$ gaming rig!".  It's competition but I think the package and overall presentation is unique enough to find its legs and go from there.

I agree with everything stated here.  You consistently knock it out of the park with your posts!

It's amazing to see Apple understand that simple affordable games with no in-app purchasing, loot boxes or annoying ads is something that people want.  I think it only solidifies what we're doing... and even though I'm not an Apple owner... I have huge respect for what they continue to accomplish and they have been known to innovate a few things.  :)

The other thing to mention about the Apple Arcade is that you pretty much need to be an Apple product owner to access it.  That just took out a majority of the entire planet.  I can tell you that the 2 biggest countries in the world (China & India) which have almost half the entire planet of people... aren't sporting $1,000 Apple products (even though they are all made there... ironic).

I'm not in any way saying we are better than Apple, etc. (I know the haters are just waiting for me to compare ourselves to Apple so they can jump all over me)... I'm just pointing out one of the many differences in what we are offering (that you don't need an Apple product or subscription to access).  I think it's also more fun to be able to have a centralized screen that everyone sees while everyone in the room has their own controllers (with a screen!).  It opens up a LOT more interactivity and couch co-op or versus opportunities.

For folks who love Apple Arcade... I can definitely see them liking Amico as well.

Gameboard is a neat idea but even for D&D i don't see it as necessary. I'm good with some grid paper and lines as our dungeon. Now that being said I know people who have 3d printed a dungeon.

It is definitely an interesting time for gaming.

Any chance we will see a demo/video/tease of a board game on the Amico in near future?

Probably not until E3.  Could be sooner.  Not sure just yet.

The pre order practice is quite common in the collectionist world, it's a way to gain a particular version of an item, game or console speaking of video games.

The particularity could be a low serial number, additional items not available in the regulard versions, and so on. Even some recent Intrellivision games gone on preorder for these exact reasons.

The "Founders" edition of a game or console is another way to satisfy both enthusiast and collectors and it's pretty normal to have a pre order on that particular edition because IS NOT the normal edition of that game or console.

For Amico the pre order amount is not the full price of the package and will be totally refundable, not so many pre orders policy are like that. To purchase the regular edition is enough to wait his release.

It's a preorder, not a crowfound, can be perceived like a crownfound but isn't it.

Exactly.  Thank you for laying it out in a simple way that most folks can understand.

It's for a SPECIAL version and really only for uber collectors and fans.  To make it seem like anything else is not understand the mission of why we would do it.  At the end of day... thousands of people have asked for it... so we thought we would do something special and nice for the folks who have been begging us to do something like this.  That somehow turned into "Amico is a cash grab scam".

Thank you so much for worrying about everyone who hasn't had the same life experiences you've had.  I'm sure everyone is very appreciative and they wish that they could someday be able to be as experienced as you are.

Tommy what about a game with a hardcore sim mode and arcade mode for gamers. Check out fire pro wrestling world (on. Steam and ps4) for inspiration heck get them to make a special fire pro for the amico  its 2d Sprite based but more a sim that's timing based instead of button mashing.  But could include an arcade mode a separate.   It's the one game you might wanna relax on the difficuly level  commandment.   It has an ai difficuly of like 1 to 20 but  also in certain game modes like  league ms which are toubd Robin tournaments  your difficulty progresses  it adds to the game  . Also you are scored on performance  not just winning  (where you win or loss matters less than how you work the. Watch much lime actual pro wrestling in ways)  but wins still matter , it's more of an achievement reward system in ways.

Even though its sim it's not difficult but has a steep learning curve to new players but easy to figure the basics after a few matches.

But an arcade mode could be added to have more fast paced fun to the game for other players.

Fire pro has mostly been a game importers went after  going back to tg16 SNES era.

Its biggest thing outside of being the best wrestling game series was the level of detail of its create a character and even arena and ring..... think Mario maker but for a fighting game.

Fire pros creation suite is top of the class.

Yeah... I could see something like that happening at some point.

That’s what I said. Some hyper-alarmist dude pushes the chameleon/ataribox panic button, the rumor is going to take on its own life in the blogosphere. Thing is, he said he didn’t want people to risk losing $100, but him and most of the others will probably waste that much on stuff they’ll use 0-2 times, like the Flashback Blast.

Also, they are taking the alarmist dudes misinformation that he wants $300 up front when it is only $100. So, good healthy discussion bojay, more misinformation spread, but I’m sure you enjoy the attention.

I just watched the video.  I thought it was going to be a lot worse than it was.  They kept it pretty respectful which was nice to see for a change.  They did assume some things that weren't correct... but I don't expect them to know every little bit about it.  They mentioned they saw my post on Twitter about it and little info was given.  I am going to make a quick video today and post it on Twitter for them.  They brought up legitimate concerns and I will respectful address each one.  This is what I tried doing on Twitter when they first posted some misinformation (basic units would be $300, etc.) but clearly they took it as an attack or challenge and then it all got blown out of proportion once the drama started.  So this time I'll make a simple and quick video so they can see and hear how I am responding instead of thinking I'm attacking them with typing words.  It's hard sometimes to get nuances of speech and inflections when reading/typing words... and especially tweets!

We'll see how they respond... hopefully in the manner it was meant... to give them a little more information on some of their justified assumptions and questions.

I read some of the comments on the video and noticed something I found to be interesting that I would like to share.

It comes from one of the posters here in this thread.  It's from djconvoy... he posted the following on the video...

"The troubling thing to me is that they haven't nailed down the price for the normal, plain unit yet (which keeps drifting up if you have watched the AA thread), but if you ask about the reasoning of releasing this, essentially as crowdfunding which is really bizarre to me, the nice replies change to IT'S OBVIOUSLY NOT FOR YOU real quick. The FE certainly isn't for me. The actual Amico itself...? I haven't seen much to push me in it's direction, and I know this much; rides and bribes for YouTubers (not you guys, but you know who I'm talking about) certainly isn't "influencing me" for the better. Nail down the Amico, give us an exact cost and how you can buy one. Then worry about the fancy version for the true believers. Quit talking about how this isn't for hardcore gamers and then going to YouTube gaming channels and beg for coverage.

The other problem is that Atari Age, a site I love and pay money to subscribe to is now kind of ground zero for Tommy's advertisements and admonishments. At first it was kind of neat to interact with someone who loves games and is working on something new... now I wish he would pack up and go advertise at his own site. Make your own forum and let the fanboys with blinders on do their own thing there."

It's the last line that really rubs me the wrong way.  He is basically saying that because he pays money to Atari Age, he doesn't like that I promote and talk about Amico... so he wishes/hopes that I just leave Atari Age and that everyone here who likes the idea of Amico is just a blind fanboy.

Well... thanks djconvoy for letting everyone know how you really feel.  I'm sure we'll take that into consideration next time you post something.

I got this SUPER CRAZY idea for you that might sound really insane... but maybe you could... I don't know... just give it a try.

Are you ready?

Don't click on this thread if you don't want to hear from me and you dislike the folks in here.

I know... I know... it sounds crazy.  But something you may want to think about instead of implying that we don't deserve to be here because we don't pay or because we all like talking about positive aspects and possibilities of the machine.

Make sense?

You are literally complaining about something you have 100% full control over not seeing/reading.  How dare folks in here want to discuss positive stuff with me!  In a forum that has tens of thousands of individual threads... we should just LEAVE our one thread because you pay money and shouldn't be forced to know we exist.

First Amico_Tony on Reddit tracked all of these Twitter posts down so full credit to him. Just pondering here is - is SpaceFlower's world building/trading game "Let Them Trade" maybe getting mophed into a re-imagined Utopia?

They are a super talented group!  We are working on something completely different than Utopia with them... but when we saw the other game they have... we did put them on our short list of potential folks to work with when we kick off Utopia II development (which we haven't started yet).  We will have a Utopia on launch... but it isn't what people will be expecting (in a good way).  Will hopefully be showing it at E3.

Has Tommy given a newer prediction about when the FE will be available?

We don't have an exact date yet... will know a lot more by mid next week.  We are thinking the 3rd or 4th week in January... so definitely sooner than later!
