Intellivision Amico - Tommy Tallarico introduction + Q&A

Recommended Posts

I love sim sports games and I love arcade style sports games but what I want the most out of Amico sports games is for them to be fun and not overly complicated.   Whether this means a game like hockey maybe has all the rules but also has lots of offensive chances and acrobatic saves, that’s A-OK

For hockey they could do worse than following the nhl94 style gaming but with more modern graphics

Were we supposed to get any info on Monday or Tuesday this week? Or was it just stuff on Friday?

Sometime today I thought - a video of Skiing I think. I have been waiting most of the day (U.K here) but nothing - I guess Tommy is super busy. It will come I am sure

He needs more lackeys, or maybe minions.

I've been waiting for more videos glad we are gonna get some, unfortunately I think we are mostly gonna get small clips because anytime they put out a lengthy video you know who puts out a negative video on it.

Tommy said in a recent video that we should have between 5 and 10 minutes of gameplay from Night Stalker.  😉

Oh really? That's sweet! I'm curious about that game the old version was scary when I was a kid

1 of the 2 sports games?  What was the other?  Or are you counting Slap Shot as the 2nd?  I'll guess.  My second least fav... Boxing.  Because you couldn't pick equal fighters.

I didn't like the change to Slam Dunk.  I liked the Clear/0/Enter for Jump/Block/Set  shots.   Not a fan of the side buttons.  And I was on an Inty 2 by this time. :(

As far as who has the puck/ball  etc.  I think Intellivision games were very clear in in this.

Also, NBA had a great layout for passing to ZONES and not players.  Worked very well.

I didn't play a lot of PGA, but I liked it fine.  I did play chip shot a bit.  But I was a little older and actually played a little golf by then.

The second one was boxing.  Didn't like any of the INTV updates except Skiing.  Chip Shot was not an update and the baseball update was done by Mattel; they were fine.  NBA was one of my favourites, so the button changes didn't work for me either.  Didn't care for the management features as well.  And the Soccer update by Nice Ideas (if it is an update) didn't work for me either but it's not terrible.  Keep in mind that there were seven years and 4x the rom between PGA and Chip Shot.  PGA was very impressive in the early 1980s.

Tommy, do you plan to do this for every single Amico game or only for the initial games? And in any case, can you reveal the brand of coffee you drink?

Yes.  I hope so!  Been mostly doing the sound design stuff on the weekends.  My old sound designer (Joey Kuras) who I've known since a teenager (we met in high school when we both worked in an arcade together!) was with me for 20 years.  He then joined Epic Games once I started doing Video Games Live full time and worked on Gears of War & Fortnite!  Now he's back with me again.

I typically spend from 4am - 10am working on the game designs.  The rest of the time (10am - midnight) on the hardware, manufacturing, marketing and raising money.  Each of those things has a team of incredible people working together with me.

When you "hear" Night Stalker you'll want me working overtime on the audio.  :)  I'm super proud of this one.

Never drank coffee, don't do drugs.  All adrenaline and excitement!

Maybe I'm wrong but I'd like to see a sideways orientation to Soccer and most other sports games.

Yeah... the Intellivision versions of Soccer, Hockey, Football & Basketball (like the originals) will be sideways.  Especially with the modern 16:9 aspect ratio where you can have more action and more horizontal space.

That doesn't mean we can't have "multiple" games though.  Intellivision Football, Tecmo Bowl, 10 Yard Fight, etc.  Different types of games for different folks and types of players!

Hmm...

With rumors about Frogger coming on Amico ( From Konami )

this game could be Circus Charlie ? (Also from Konami in 1984 !) Maybe !

If at least one of those two games are coming on Amico, that's huge ! Konami was so good with arcade games !

image.pngSorry, had a hard time trying to delete this one. Missed ! :(

I played the hell out of that game on different emulators.  Fun and challenging.  Would love to see that one make a comeback.  Was partly the influence for the circus game you saw in our Gamescom trailer.  :)

If an Ice Hockey comes to the Amico....

Do not make it SLOW like Intellivision NHL / Slap Shot.

What I am talking about is changing directions!  I played Hockey from Mites 6-8 years old through College.  And then OLD MAN league :(

NHL was the only sport game I didn't play on the Intellivision.  My Brother and I would play NASL instead.  I never played an actual game of soccer in my life.

Hockey should be soccer at super speed!  NHL speeds reach 30 MPH.  Of course an active shift in Hockey is 30 seconds!

We are huge fans of the original Intellivision Hockey and more than likely would keep around the current speed of the game which I realize is a little slow (we would speed it up a little bit) but because of the slowness (and seeing the entire rink on screen) it makes it more playable for more people.  But again... no reason why we couldn't have more modes (Pro) that made the game faster if you wanted... or different Hockey games.  Being slower and then getting a break-a-way really gets your adrenaline pumping.  But I do think we can get it going faster because we'll have a 16:9 ratio and more space to work with within the rink.

Totally agree!

There is a balance to be found for sure.  But again... the idea of having a more arcade style vs a more sim style (both easy and simple to understand) would be the way to go.  Something for everyone.

Sports games are the biggest selling games for most consoles!  FIFA dominates the world of video games.  More than Call of Duty, etc.  We currently have 3 different soccer games on the table... and that is for most of our Sports games.  1 Hyper casual (just shooting or defending a goal), 1 average simple & fun, and then 1 more for the hardcores.

Super long day today and reviewing and deciding which stuff we want to show.

Night Stalker, Astrosmash, Skiing, the dice demo and another Meet Amico are all things on the table right now.

I think you'll freak when you see multiplayer Astrosmash.  Perfect example of a super casual, simple & fun game that doesn't need super fancy 3D graphics in order to look and feel fantastic.

Going to start with Night Stalker tomorrow (Wednesday) as well as more info on the Founder's Edition.

No... they'll be longer this time for sure!  Similar to Breakout!

The INTV baseball update (World Championship) was the best upgrade I thought.  Sliding, ball being able to be hit in the air... and that pitching!!!  So cool.

Interested to know everyone's thoughts on this video and what they showed (not much).

At one point... around 16 minutes in he talks about "hoping to get Nintendo games" on to the Atari platform.

WTF??

Super naive statement IMO.

I don't know about you guys... but I can't wait to navigate Facebook on my TV with the original Atari joystick.

🤓

I hope they succeed in some form... I really do.  I just don't see a path at this point.  Hope I'm wrong.

Thanks for the news, Tommy... I think I can speak in the name of everyone reading this topic when I say that our hype level is ultra high today. Let's see what you have to show. ⛷️🌛🔫🎲🚀

About Atari, well... Let's just say Stadia will look like a huge success compared to them. Both have made the same mistake, believing that "I can do this" means "there is a demand for this", but when you check Google's stock value you realize Stadia is just another experiment and they can even support it at a loss for 10 years while providing a few exclusive games and a good service, while Atari is basically offering something that looks cool and has a famous brand for 300 bucks.

The new features on the classic Atari joystick are interesting, though... You can spin it and there is a cute light when you push it to one direction. I wonder where they got those ideas from? 🧐

Perhaps they can sell around 100,000 just for the brand recognition and the looks of the device, but that's it... They seem to be waiting for developers to call them to create games, it's weird. The guy even said that they hope developers will say "hey, I want to create something that people can play with a controller that looks this cool". Now that's what I call a real Red Flag®. 🚨🛑🚧

Super pumped to be nearing the time we can pre order the Founders Edition, gonna get one for me and my older brother. It will be completion of a long journey as I tore up his original Intellivision console back in the 80’s(so he says, my cousin and I simply were playing it when it decided to conk out).

He better hope I don’t decide to eBay it if Tommy & team have a huge, hard to get Christmas item to get on their hands 😉

Knowing what I know about their "pre-order" numbers for the past 8 months... they will need an absolute miracle to hit 100,000 units IMO.

It's possible if it comes out and a ton of hardcores want to use it as a Steam box for their TV's.  I guess you can say at that point it could "pick up a little steam" (see what I did there!  Sorry... dad joke).

😂

They have around 10,000 orders from their crowd funding campaign.  Not many more from their retailer websites (Gamestop.com & Walmart.com).  I have been told that initially they will not be stocked at retail.  Only online orders.

But again... if they can break through and become successful, then the brick and mortar retailers will carry it.  But not initially.

We're very different in that regards.  And although being on a shelf at retail isn't a slam dunk for success by any means... it's a huge step up from only being sold online.
